Post E3 2006 feedback/constructive comments

Well, dude, if you want something new, a PC-based multiplayer FPS isn’t what you’re looking for. Everything has been done a hundred times so all we’ll have is variations of the same ideas.

If you want something new, go try Shadow of The Colossus, Spore, Katamari Damacy, Geometry Wars, I don’t know.

(Zyklon) #82

Innovation is overrated.

(bosx2) #83

jimb0 I guess, you are right :frowning:

for the others, you really should read yourself. Are you looking everything throu qw glasses? and knock the fanboy talk off, its childish really

(madness) #84

Is there a spawnprotection like in W:ET? where you can’t die 1-2sec after spawn/revive?
It really sucks in BF2, where you can die splitsecond after spawning

(Gringo) #85

Yes there is an intial invunerable period of a few secs in ET.

@bosx2: We dont want things to be totally different. What i think most of us are looking for is the basic principles of ET revamped into the QW universe and obviously all that comes along with that, eg vehicles etc etc. Yes we are fanbhoys cuz most of us adore ET and tbh dont want QW to stray to far from it as it is the best game ever (imo) and is hard to top.

Plus it is slightly unrealisitc for u to assume that revolutionary ideas can be adopted in a games genre which is entirely saturated!

Ok, having watched a new gameplay video featuring Anansi, I’m now positively sure 3rd person view should be dropped. I mean, even though we’re not talking entirely realistic here, but there should be a limit somewhere at how far into arcade this game goes. I know you want to appeal to the widest possible audience, and 3rd person view does exactly that (or is there some other idea behind it? can’t see any), but come on… it looks just wrong in the game which gets everything else just right.

(jimb0) #87

I want 4th person view now.

(Rhoades) #88

calm down, afaik third person view is only used in deploying things in order to get a better view of where to put them.

indeed. + vehicles

I’d still like it to not be used on vehicles. Makes it more of a challenge piloting them, and the sneaky infanterist can take them out more easily.

(Rhoades) #91

its optional on vehicles, easily seen in the videos

(Schizma) #92

I dont know if I like 3rd person in vehicles. Sucks in Bf2 because if the special forces try to sneak up behind a tank with c4 the driver can see them.

@bosx2,
plz make “constructive” criticism…

It is obvious that you, the rest of the public and I…do not know everything that there is to know about Mega-texturing.

  • I consider the criticism in your statements to be ridiculous(as a literal term). I also think that your statements lean toward the verges of angst, maybe from being ‘un-informed’.

I am not being rude, I am just making a point…seemingly you have dismissed 50% of -bacon-'s comment and twisted the very ideas that conflicted any of your criticism.
Avoiding the MAIN points of the argument and claiming to understand something that you clearly do not understand…leads me to think that your criticism is sophomoric in origin.

Megatexturing does not just equate to high-res images. …maybe you’ll want to watch the interview video with Cloud and Wedgwood to learn a little more about this game.

Now that I have said that portion…
…if you do not like the game…then don’t bother playing. No one is forcing you to like it and no one is forcing you to come here and complain either.
------However…if you do have valid points with hard facts that you will ‘choose to discuss’, then plz do entertain me/us with your ideas/opinions.

P.S. The comparisons that you use to prove your points could be utilized in the same fashion for me to argue against your opinion.
[example]…Afterall, nintendo/pc/sega all had games with vehicles and armys in 1990.

Maybe you want to inform yourself about that stuff too.

I hope the vehicles are like Halo controls wise. Simple enough that even the total newb can ge you across the map yet responsive enough that pros can make vehicle driving/piloting an art. Also I think it’s a good idea to actually be able to take out a vehicle as an infantryman as long as you’re smart enough to know how. The most retarded “feature” in BF2 is that if a tank sees you, you die and that’s it, you can’t kill it by being sneaky or underhanded unless you are SF or AA, and even then it takes a fairly skilled/lucky SF or about 3 well placed AA’s to take a tank out, which means lots of campers in tanks.

Honestly, vehicles should be easy to use… and fairly easy to take out. Enough so that a n00b would be able to fly his teamates to an objective in a Buffalo, but get mowed down if he tried to actually kill people with it… or any other vehicle. But they should also have enough advanced features and maneuverability to be lethal in the hands of skilled players (considering infantry isn’t all there is to combat, ET playas :P).

I’d like to point out that the video compression of ALL the so far released videos (including trailers), is not good enough for judging texture quality.

Video Compression is designed for overall objects, not per-pixel detail. They effectivly group and blur pixels to make compression easier.

You would have had to go to E3 and see it yourself to be able to judge texture quality appropriately.

[quote=“madness”]

In fact, my main gripe was with vehicles. You see, 3rd person view is like changing fov to 180 without any bad effects. And like it was said many times here, you just can’t sneak up from behind or any other direction not usually visible from the cockpit.
I’m not sure about deploying objects, I wonder why not use tactical map for that (the one you’re getting on pressing “L” in W:ET)?

(Deth_Metal) #97

The problem is not 3rd person view, but rather making the vehicle so maneuverable that you can just whip around and kill anyone sneaking up on you, which should not be the case. The real reason you pretty much HAVE to have 3rd person view is simply because it’s a game, and as such can’t provide you with the 170 degree FOV that your normal eyesight provides you with, combined with the ability to move your head around without drastically hampering gameplay (as most vehicle controls that allow you to look around while you drive do). The most obvious and, more importantly, most practical solution is then 3rd person view.

The problem, as has already been sighted, is that you can see behind yourself with that, well, you can see behind yourself in a vehicle in RL, and much more efficiently I might add, so there really is nothing wrong with that aspect of it. No, the real problem lies with being able to maneuver the vehicle so as to deploy deadly force on the person attacking you, which you wouldn’t be able to do in real life, at least not in a way that wouldn’t be easily avoided by the attacker.

Besides, if you are attacking a vehicle, it should be from far enough away that he can’t see you behind him anyways!

(Gringo) #98

Speak english man,or less intelligently cuz i too stupid to understand a big word like that!

(crumblycake) #99

In Halo for the PC there is the third person perspective when using the vehicles.

Like this one in the ghost

and this one in the HOG. I think it works fine for Halo and I think it will work out the same in QW. I play Halo alot and the third person view doesn’t bother me a bit. We’ll see when QW comes out.

Gringo!

Sophomoric: Exhibiting great immaturity and lack of judgment: sophomoric behavior

(From dictionary.com)

EDIT: I know we’re a lot further forward than the few screenshots and a trailer we had previously, but it amazes me that people are still making some very large leaps of judgement based on one map in one playable demo played by a few people (on this forum at least).

It further amazes me how people can get so worked up by it all too - it’s just a game everyone!
