Post E3 2006 feedback/constructive comments

(Apocalypse) #1

Firstly, I dunno if this is warranted by the devs. If not, please feel free to delete or lock this thread.

Secondly, may I request that anyone who wants to make a comment to at least view the in-game first.

IGN in-game videos
Planet Quake Hi-res in-game footage

Please be constructive!

Iā€™ll start first.

Comment 1. Players seems to be able to tell enemies apart (names and Red tag) when pointing at them. Ala BF2 style? I feel this is detrimental to gameplay because it removes all aspects of the ability to sneak and hide. Much less removes the use of effective ground cover like foliage. If this is necessary, maybe the range can be reduced to show only when in short range (like less than 10m).

Nit-picking 1. Could use better in-game fonts?
Nit-picking 2. One of the video showed the Strogg limbo screen and I noticed a sergeant like rank? Ermā€¦ Stroggs compliant with Earthy ranks? No way! :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!

The fonts look absolutely perfect for screen use in my opinion. What do you mean by ā€œbetterā€?

I agree with yout comment, health bars on enemies and quick name identification seems wack. I figure theyā€™ll remove it, who knows why was that on. And yeah, BF2 has it on enemies, but just showing the names and it takes a while to show - ie, you have to focus your crosshair on the enemy for a couple of seconds for that to appear (not mentioning it also has the ability to sometimes label friends as enemies, with red names).

Overall, ETQW looks great to me. As an internet user thousands of kilometers away from them who has just seen a couple of shaky cams video on a computer, I donā€™t think thereā€™s anything I could say to someone who was been working on this game for a few years that they donā€™t already know.

Maybe changeable by cvar ?
ā€¦I think it should be at the server admins discretion however abnormal the setting.

I dislike the name tags, and would like a more W:ET style UI.

I would also like a voice macro system like W:ET, but also have an Alpha version aswell as a Numeric version like RtCW MP had.

Its hard to say much else untill we can actually get our hands on it. coughpublic-betacough

(Ragnar_40k) #5

Can Stroogs drag bodies around before they stroggify it?

(Schizma) #6

w00t for ATVā€™s and the Icarus Jetpack. Cover tons of ground with those things, no more taking 10 minutes running to the battle. I dont really like the throwing animations with the medic packs though, he just throws it weird, looks like he throws it really hard yet doesnt go very far. I dont know whatever just looks odd. Gameplay looks sweet though! Whats with all this complaining about the graphics being bad? Graphics look awesome to me and its a video camera taping a computer screen.

Things looks great. Just a few questionsā€¦

  • Will custom campaigns be possible to do, for server admins, in ETQW, just like in ET?
  • Will hitsounds be available in ETQW, just like in ET with ā€˜ET Proā€™?
  • Will 3 headshots in ETQW be an instant kill, just like in ET?
  • Will there be alternative HUD modes to choose from in ETQW, just like in ET with ET Pro?

(Floris) #8
  • I bet!
  • Maybe, quake IV had hitsounds too
  • idk ( I think not tho, making headshots in quake IV was quite a nasty task ^^ )
  • idk

Hey there Apocalyse,
Thanks for stopping by the stand, and for all your kind comments. Please yes, constructive feedback always most welcome. As a general point, one thing to bear in mind is that we were showing off is pretty much Alpha (plus a bunch of schweet environment art), so nothingā€™s final, least of all the User Interface.

More non-committal answers soon and anon, but right now Iā€™m falling asleep after a second dayā€™s shouting myself hoarse. Last day of E3 to goā€¦mutterā€¦tapirsā€¦man, Tony Hawkā€™s really TALLā€¦

(Apocalypse) #10

Well, would it be too much to ask for a demo so that we can give more/better feedback?

Anyway, congrats to SD for getting almost all positive reviews from the various sources that I read.

i canā€™t say much as i canā€™t play the game because the event is on the other side of the world. all i can say from the ingame videos is that i confirm what the previewers said: this game will be better than bf2. so imo a lot of players will switch over. awesome is that quake wars only gets absolute positive feedback from everywhere. the game looks smooth and fast and seems to be the ET successor that we all wanted so badly. awesome thing is that you almost always see infantry footage in the videos, so there really doesnā€™t seem too be a danger that vehicles take over the game. hope to see much much more of ingame videos, also with the phsyics engine.

canā€™t wait to get my hands on a demo. i wonder if weā€™ll get to play the E3 demo at our home pcs soon.

I think its fair to give your comments over just viewing the video. It has a lot of telling signs of things to come. AFAIK, alpha means that most of the gameplay is in place but not graphically. Meaning placeholders might be used in some place (though not apparent in the videos).

I just hope the many of us here who truly looks forward to this game can have some feedback to the devs. Which incidentally seems to be the only developer (that I know of) that actually talks to the potential players! Commenting on what you can tell from the videos is nothing sinful.

That said, I think weā€™d likely only see demos after the beta build. And I think the SD people deserves their break after E3 too.

(Bongoboy) #14

Break after E3?

*hollow laughter

(Nail) #15

sure, you can sleep on the plane

:bored:

(Loffy) #16

Videos look just perfect. Thank you all.
I do not need a demo. Just focus on the game. Release when ready.

(Deth_Metal) #17

I would be interested in seeing a little more on the vehicle physics. The one in-game movie showing the guy on the Husky looked okay, but there wasnā€™t much to seeā€¦ However, in another spot on the same video you can see a GDF troop transport drivingā€¦ on the roof of a building. Looking forward to pulling sweet stunts in the midst of pwning!

The name tag showing up is also my biggest concern. I would like it to be the way it is in ET, have a name tag pop up when you aim at a teammate, and thatā€™s all.
What I also donā€™t like is the 3rd person vehicle cameraā€¦ Seems like it wonā€™t be easy to sneak up to a Goliath to strap some C4 to him. I would like to have 1st person anywhere.

(Floris) #19

I hope that 3rd person vehicle control is a server setting and can be filtered out.

I second that!

For the restā€¦it looks great but i really need a demo to give a real feedback
