Can you honestly tell me that when you were a young child that you Actually enjoyed doing chores without seeing any type of reward, and did it for “all the right reasons?”
I didn’t get allowance or anything when I was young. I understood, when Mom and Dad tell you to do something, you do it, no questions asked.
Possible achievements for the xbox version
Thats pure fear/respect mate, not knowing it’s wrong or right
It wasn’t “fear,” since my parents didn’t beat me or anything, and I had nothing to be afraid of. It was respect. I didn’t have to worry about it being “wrong or right,” since I knew my parents wouldn’t tell me to do a “wrong” thing - I might have been a little kid, but I had common sense. My parents raised me well, and I thank them for that.
I agree, I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, my brother and I made our beds, kept our rooms clean and helped around the house (mowing lawn, weeding garden etc.) When we had summer jobs, most of the money we earned went to the family expenses, it’s just the way my generation was brought up. There was no sense of entitlement then.
I’m on the neutral fence with this one, on one hand as has been said, certain achievements can harm the gameplay, on the other hand they can open up new elements to a player who wouldn’t normally find them. One that springs to mind are the skulls in Halo 3, littered all over the campaign are skulls to collect, which means you have to explore the maps rather than just hammering your way straight through… not entirely sure how that would be a bad thing.
One curious thing that was mentioned here how ever is achievements giving away tactics or ways of doing things, I do like discovering things in a new game for myself, and it’s even better when that time pays off and you discover something that can help sway a match. Having that discovery made available via an achievement is like having a manual in game showing you everything there is to know, taking away any of the mystery or depth… and removing my sense of achievement when I discover something for myself.
True, but then again… look on Steam for example. They show the total number of people who have unlocked the achievements (from the whole Steam database of clients). Not many people unlock them. So not They’re great for people who want to use them as an auxilliary game mode I guess, but they don’t have to be done.
It’s not like every player who plays a game is going to go trawling through the achievements and learning all the secrets of the game.
Yeah, one thing no one has even mentioned yet is the fact that; Regardless of how you feel about achievements, they Will still be there for everyone. And you aren’t required to get the achievements.

I guess that also negates the argument that those gunning for achievements are upsetting the game for others if there aren’t that many doing them in the 1st place (on the PC at least, I believe 360 is slightly more popular for hunters). And also, once it has been achieved, that’s it over with… so I think the negative comments are a little blown out of proportion. I have had the very rare run in with players on a server just to get achievements, but that’s a lot less than the players i’ve run into who are there just to cause havoc with purpose TK’ing, bleeding and door blocking.
I would say from personal gaming experience that achievement design has gotten a lot more refined over the past few years, with developers figuring out how to use them effectively while preventing people from ‘playing the achievements’.

Look at Steam -> http://imagik.fr/view-rl/252055
and you can bet there’ll be custom xp farming servers for brink. It’s what people do to unlock upgrades if there are unlockable upgrades (like in tf2… and Brink).
I was recently playing a game of tf2 and a player on my team sent me a message asking me to add him as a friend because he wanted to get some acheivement where you become friends with everyone on your team. When i checked i found him standing motionless in the respawn area.
Obviously instead of playing the game he was sending messages to everyone instead of helping our team.
I’m fine with acheivements as long as they’re not ANYTHING like this one.
At least with the console versions we won’t have to worry about “achievement dedicated servers” and It’s really not as bad as some think… Usually when someone trys being an achievement noob, everyone just turns on him cus its every man for himself. I.E. the 1st few people will get the achievement than stop helping the others… so People don’t try as much anymore.
I hope they have a viral achievement… Like they did in Shadowrun, and GTA IV where you kill someone that has it,then you get it.
