Port for Linux.

(DarkangelUK) #101

I think we should have a pre-emptive google Chrome version as well

(RoryGreen) #102

 lol. And a Mac version too, that should cater for all of the non gaming computers out there

I pledge to buy multiple copies of this game if a native Linux client is released.

Linux users on this forum should send retail receipts to Splash/id to convince
management that a Linux port is not a bad move, considering that TTimo and
icculus have the ability to work on Linux ports.

Waiting for 3-4 months or so to play the game is better than not being able to
play the game under Linux. The renderer is platform agnostic, so it can be done.

Linux support += 1

I also use Linux. A boxed release for Linux of this game is an instant buy for me.

1: Linux ports were free, no receipts to be had
2: neither TTimo nor icculus work for Splash Damage

but I hope it works out

To make it short:
My clan buys it if there will be a linux port, otherwise they will not buy it.

To make it longer than the short version:
This game has potential.
Last game I bought was ET:QW.
I am a very active gamer with few thousand hours per my top games past 5 years.
I will move my clan to what ever good fps that comes out on Linux. The plan was to get Wolfenstein but there was no Linux port so I told my clan to wait longer. I wish for Brink to release a linux port because of it’s potentials but I am by no means tied to this game.
I will not answer any flamebaits about Windows vs Linux as it results is nothing (perhaps only in people seeing how little you know what you are talking about).

Are you willing to have a closed repo for few linux devs? I dont think any of us will be ready to do all the work them selfs, and I am pretty busy at the moment.

(DarkangelUK) #107

It’s hard to tell how to take statements like this, it’s almost like a threat… of course could just be a harmless statement. If it’s the former, then it won’t work… if it’s the latter, then it’s safe to say you’re on linux for a reason and not buying a windows version is a given.

(Nail) #108

A Linux only clan ? Sorta like having a Mac only clan, short list of games to play competively.

(Linux-user) #109

I’ve already bought multiple copies of native Linux games before. If this game has a nice boxed Linux release (like these games I’ve bought from Linux Game Publishing) I’m certainly going to buy multiple copies.

(an1ta) #110

I didn’t say it was a linux only clan… would be cool… but not really though.

Imagine this. You are in a clan which is looking for a game.
Would you buy a game which your clan leader and top players cannot play? Yes you would… if you are wanting to leave the clan… of if you are intending just to play the SP and perhaps the MP if there are any players on public.
Sadly that means if the clan goes to one game that means you either buy the game to play with them or you are not really active in the clan anymore.

That is what I meant.
Not that we are all running linux. Only 2 of us are on linux as only I am without it.

And just to vent out my frustration about finding a game. I’ll have to find a game that has a gaming community or has potentials to have one. So going to a game that had many active players and will likely to keep them playing for a while (so avoid companies which didn’t fix bugs that killed the top clans and games that do not have proper dedicated servers).

Right so you’re more or less a Linux limited clan then, since it’s you who dictates what games your clan will play competitively because of your limited library.

(Jamieson) #112

I support a linux port. The more people who can play this game the better.

(ThunderWank) #113

Don’t take offence to this all you Linux users but what exactly are the benefits of using Linux?
AAfter doing some minimal searching it seems that a Mac or PC iseems to beat Linux in every category.
And the idea of having a gaming rig that runs on Linux just seems foolish.

By that account SD should just release BRINK on the Xbox 360 and PS3, PC gaming has a much smaller market share! Maybe they could drop the PS3 as well. Or maybe they should just develop games for mobile phones

Anyway reductio ad absurdum, I know. The reason I use Linux is because I like it - it’s free, my inner geek can look into the source code, it is secure and crashes less than Windows. It doesn’t require you to defrag your hard drive either

Perhaps SD should not just port the game to Linux, but use Linux to make BRINK a game which you can just start and play when you put in the DVD during boot (like Google’s Chrome OS but then for games) How many AAA games have tried that?

(Nail) #115

crashes less than Windows ? I haven’t had a non hardware related crash since Win 2000, never had a BSOD on Win 2000 in over 7 years, only had Vista for 3 months but no probs yet

I don’t remember saying they shouldn’t port it…Or insulting your OS in anyway, so no need for your hostility.
Regardless I guess the main draw of Linux is that it’s free.
And don’t take offence but don’t you think moving to windows would be a decent idea. I mean if you were to get 2000 it runs good, is fairly cheap and you wouldn’t have to worry abou not being able to play a certain game.

(DarkangelUK) #117

I’m not entirely sure what linux users did to their windows PC to make it ‘crash’ so much, but it’s probably best you don’t use it then :stuck_out_tongue: Seems to be a common argument, crashing, i do a lot on my windows PC, editing, rendering, gaming, encoding, decoding… and well, it just doesn’t crash.

(Nail) #118

lol, same old argument about windows that Linux and Mac "fan"atics use, it always crashes. My Mac G4 crashed more often than Win 95 ever did, would hang if I tried multi-tasking, opening two similar programs, or heaven forbid trying to do anything while using ftp. I find it funny that people will spend thousands on Quad Core, 8 gigs of RAM and SLI’d GTX 295s and then complain about $120 for an O/S. I like Linux as an O/S but I realize if I want to play games, I need Windows on at least one machine

(Dormamu) #119
…And the idea of having a gaming rig that runs on Linux just seems foolish.
as in stupid? Then, if is stupid to have a gaming rig that runs on Linux, i can go further and say that is also stupid to make games for Linux? And if SD make’s games for Linux, are you saying that SD is “foolish”?

When we try to compare Windows to Linux to other SO, first we need to learn all about them … and wen we do that… at the end we realize that all, are only tools. Saying that your tool is shinier than mine or mine is better than yours… is foolish. As long as you are happier with your OS i don’t see the point in trying to start a Windows vs Linux war. It will help Brink? No. It will help you be more happy about your OS choice? Yes.

(wonder) #120

Please provide the Linux version. It is a rapidly raising platform.
