An iphone version would probably sell more than a linux version :D
Linux versions usually don’t get sold so that’s not really an argument. Would be interesting to see the numbers of linux players at ETQW and QL, though.
check community.enemyterritory.com, theres a poll on the right a little ways down. 21% voted for linux [you also have to take in account the people that might have voted but don’t visit the site]
from a more serious point of view: what is really the reason that any developer should spend valuable dev time on a linux port, when windows 7 costs only 49,- euro? i know, it’s linux vs windows. but at that price, everyone can afford it and when they want to play games, boot into win. and if you want server + client running at the same time on the same machine, you can also use the windows one. of course, if you want to keep the server running when you don’t play, there’s a problem when you can’t boot into the os which you prefer, but still i don’t get the real point in having a linux port anymore
saying everyone can spend 100$ for a game seems a like a bit too much imho [btw, that’d be 50 for 7 and 50 for the game]
Either way, its a matter of choice. If it came out only for mac would you go out and buy a mac?
There’s not enough Linux users to warrant the time tbh… the linux community can’t even decide on a distribution to agree on… why help a community that can’t even help itself?
funny you should say that since a poll on the ETQW community site reveals that close to a quarter of the voters played on the linux version.
Quarter of the forum goers in the offtopic section use linux, says nothing tbh.
it wasn’t in the off topic section, it was an ‘official poll’, if you will. Either way, to be able to properly quantify the users for both platforms we’d need information from the servers themselves I presume. In any case, even though the poll is definitely not something to be taken completely as fact I do believe it helps to show that the demand for a linux client is higher than most people would think.
So really, out of 21000 (that post on the forums), 4400 use linux. In the previous games, i believe it was usually one guy that worked on the linux ports, and that was only cos he was a linux user. Now i’m not saying don’t dev for linux, what im more saying is don’t take away from the current development to cater for a community that is already ill-devided.
I’m fine with just that one developer and I also agree that the game as a whole has priority over a linux specific port. Either way, considering they’re simultaneously developing for three different platforms [ps3/xbox/pc] I don’t think making a linux version once the product is done should be that much of an issue.
Unless I’m mistaken, there was only 1 linux ETQW version, so really the whole ‘nobody agrees on what distro to pick’ argument is moot.
