Port for Linux.

(darthmob) #61

Thanks a lot for the link jazevec! So it’s unlikely we will hear any more of it before the release of Brink.

(acidrain) #62

Also correct me if I’m wrong, but the Linux port of ETQW was done by TTimo (who works for id Software) and not by any of the Splash Damage developers.

SD would have to hire a Linux developer or get one of the existing programmers to do it. I don’t know if anybody has the time or expertise to do it.

Edit: Oops I just read jazevec’s post!
Also correct me if I’m wrong, but the Linux port of ETQW was done by TTimo (who works for id Software) and not by any of the Splash Damage developers.
So the question is how involved was he with ETQW and what’s it like with Brink.

(RR2DO2) #64

TTimo works for id, he is not involved with Brink. Any potential linux work is an in-house SD effort at the moment.

(tp) #65

I’m hoping for a Linux port. I don’t know if I’ll buy the game if there is no Linux version. Too lazy for rebooting just for gaming? Or crappy VM performance? Both.
TTimo works for id, he is not involved with Brink. Any potential linux work is an in-house SD effort at the moment.
Ok, thanks for the info. I just hope to see a definite statement at some day.

I simply appreciate it when developers invest their time to provide the possibility to play in Linux. If it’s a good game I will play it no matter if a linux client gets released or not.

Well I played W:ET (on Linux) competitively since 2003 (4 or 5 days per week as minimum?). It looks like it was a large part of my life. :stuck_out_tongue:
Well I played W:ET (on Linux) competitively since 2003 (4 or 5 days per week as minimum?). It looks like it was a large part of my life. :-P
Fair point. Sorry, I was obviously wrong (I should be more careful with placing the word obvious in my posts)!
Slightly going offtopic but If you are looking for a free competitive skill based linux game I would recommend Quake Live. It should run with steady 125fps on any pc that runs ET and it has got a similar steep learning curve with the same feeling of “no matter how much time I have played it I can still discover new things and get better”.

All I was trying to say is that you are missing out on so many great games when you only look for those few games which have linux clients. Especially when it comes to SP games.

(tp) #69

Yep, I play Quake Live sometimes. It runs smooth! I only play id games due to their Linux support. I appreciate that. I just wanted to say that it will be nice if SD made the same. Give the job to TTimo! He is the man… Excepted if SD and id are on bad terms? I suppose they aren’t.

5% of Linux gamers (see Quake Live) is important if you sale many copies of the game. I’m sure this is viable economically.

I know I miss many games. Maybe one day I will own two computers: one for gaming and one for the rest!

Like all things, a linux port is just a question of time and money.

One of the big factors in Brink is whether iit is OpenGL or DirectX. SD has been an OpenGL whore in the past, and that plays in a Linux Port’s favor. If its coming out as a Games for Windows project, snugly wrapped in Direct X, that wouldn’t be so good. Given that Brink is in the same ‘family’ as Doom and ETQW, I’d bet on OpenGL if I had to make a call…

At least that doesn’t patently rule out a linux port…

Actually I don’t think SD care much about OpenGL. They used it because id has OpenGL friendly engines. I remember one of “orange avatared” people posting something along the lines “The first thing we did was ripping X Y Z of id tools into .dll’s”. Hopefully Brink will work well in Wine because of id Tech4 it’s based on.

(RR2DO2) #72

We use OpenGL for Brink. Partially because of our legacy, partially because it provides a nice platform for cross DX9 and DX10+ class hardware, partially because of the portability. Yes, D3D has some nice debugging tools that at times I wish I’d have for GL, but at the same time there is not enough of a reason to change to D3D and support two renderer backends on the PC (D3D9 and D3D10+).

Moving tools into dlls was completely separate an issue - tools have lots of non-game specific code in there that just complicates the code base in certain ways. Having them more isolated made things nicer in certain ways (and more of a pain in others).

(vh-bil) #73

One thing I have noticed when I am playing ETQW online now is, in a full server maybe 2 users are using MS versions and the rest are Linux users. MS users have moved on to other things but Linux users stick around.

This is from me asking “Are you guys running Linux?” one time and getting back Yes, Yep etc…

I am hoping SD is a Linux supporter and I will buy every game that comes out for it. ETQW is a BF killer and I am still enjoying playing it on my Ubuntu Linux computer. I have no problems running it other then having to disable my screen saver first. The only reason I bought ETQW is I saw it listed on a Linux game website.

I want to thank SD for the ETQW Linux port and I hope to see more in the future!!!

Gotta run, im off to play some ETQW…

(mortis) #75

That cartoon sums it up nicely…

(vh-bil) #76

This is a post about a Linux port, please do not start a MS Win vs Linux as this is an argument that you can not win.

example
I was going to add a cartoon about Windows and viruses etc but here is a quote from the link I am posting:

“The Olympic opening Ceremony was pretty stunning, but apparently even the Olympics can’t escape the dreaded Windows blue screen of death (BSOD).”

wow, taken to extremes much… how about you calm down a little there dude.
its unlikely that it was aimed at that, just a simple joke.
look at his avatar and take a time-out.

How was it extreme? The off topic comment was straight after me joining this forum and posting a thank you for them making ETQW for Linux. Most other companies would reply with a your welcome, or glad your enjoying it.

I am not a Linux or Windows FanBoy unlike most people in this forum thread. I work as a software developer writing software for Linux, Mac, and Windows, I use all OS’s.

(DarkangelUK) #79

This forum has always had a relaxed attitude with friendly banter thrown in, if you can’t handle a simple quip then i don’t hold much hope for the rest of it. Yes m8 you’re taking it a little too serious, and yes the cartoon was funny

And I’m pretty sure Exedore is not a company.

If you have the time browse through random issues of xkcd: http://xkcd.com. It’s pure genius.
