Port for Linux.

(oldrat) #381

Will buy a linux version if it comes out. But not Windows to run run the Windows version, that is just stupid. ( may have worked 10 years ago )

(Nail) #382

As soon as Valve releases a Linux client for Steam, I’m sure you’ll get your wish. Until then it’s Wine, PlayonLinux or dual boot, your choice

(Joe999) #383

ask yourself again what’s really stupid if you limit yourself for no rational reason and by that missing out on a lot of great games. your statement proves a point: you aren’t a gamer. so why should anyone address you as a potential customer?

(Dragnadh) #384

Indeed, I hope that will happen soon(this year).

(nUllSkillZ) #385

As far as I know Steam on Linux is dead.

Dual Boot or Wine aren’t options for me.
(As far as I know PlayOnLinux uses Wine.)

(Dragnadh) #386

Apparently it is not, according to phoronix.

(AnthonyDa) #387

phoronix is a lie.

(nUllSkillZ) #388

I’ve only found a news in german regarding that issue:
Vorerst kein Steam für Linux

(Dragnadh) #389

Germans >_>

(Dragnadh) #390

Any new news on this?

BUMP

(Crytiqal) #391

see, this is why linux sucks

always wining about porting, buy a real OS or deal with the *****

(brbrbr) #392

there is a simple choice[for now]: 1. become “happy slave”[tnx 4 Windows games]. 2. become “nerdy geek”.
its up to you[what is more important 4 you in particular moment of time].

point is: ONLY thing preventing publushing Games on Linux is lack of[working]business-model, than any tecnical or development obstacles.
aside Microsoft pressure of dev’s and pub’s[most ot which is belong to same guys, to whom MS belong himself].

so in short: its only matter of time.
to someone become rich and famous.
after entering/growing and eating Linux games market 1st.

[QUOTE=Crytiqal;243259]see, this is why linux sucks

always wining about porting…[/QUOTE]

So the fact that there is demand for a port, makes it suck… Great, I shall remember that when the next GTA comes out on the PS3 first and all the Windows users start demanding a port: Why not buy a real gaming machine I shall ask.

Broken, your logic is…

The major issue of for Linux is the lack of the willingness to support DRM-like clauses. Publishers fear the piracy - and I don’t blame them for it to be completely honest - but piracy is also starting to get big on the consoles. I know it’s not as big as on the PC, but it’s starting to form.

Then the beancounters come in, who do the math on what the eventual profits are for a port and then it proves that it’s not feasible to even do it as a commercial entity.

The fact is that most ports of games have been voluntary ports done by enthusiast. They have been recieved with great enthusiasm and joy, but the fact is as stated above: From a financial perspective it’s not really feasible.

Now let’s make things more interesting by contradicting myself:
When native games for linux are on sale, let’s take the indie-bundle as an example, you can see the trend occur that Linux-users spend more on the game compared with Windows and respectively Mac OSX users. This has been the outcome in various cases.

In the end: The Linux user does encourage, both vocally as financially, a port for the platform, yet in this world the beancounters do not want to acknowledge it.

And that is not even to mention that the DirectX framework is less complex then OpenGL and more accepted in this world.

(LyndonL) #394

GTA always comes out on console first, and then is badly ported to PC…

(Joe999) #395

the major issue of linux is the lack of willingness of people to use it, because it sucks for the average consumer. and i rather say that drm & linux is so insignificant, that piracy doesn’t even matter there. also, why do you mention piracy? i thought from the pages before that linux users are very supportive? so i thought there’s no piracy on linux?

yes, that’s true, because there’s nothing else for them. linux users are good server fillers.

why don’t you volunteer to port the game to linux for free?

(-RedFox-) #396

Please clarify that statement, why does it suck for the average consumer?

(Nikto) #397

cuz it’s not suited for gaming?

(kamikazee) #398

Heh, based on what criteria do you state that it is not suited?

Ported id games get more FPS on Linux than on Windows and just as good, team speak / Ventrilo Linux versions exist, etc…

(Nikto) #399

well, there you said it.
“ported” id games

(SebaSOFT) #400

id games aren´t ported to be exact… they have been build with non platform dependent (or platform in¿implementation capabilities) so there is not actual port, but different implementations of the underlying libraries.
