what is your point Joe999, Carmack doesn’t own SD and he doesn’t influence over the game dev. SD is an independent dev and it’s their choice to release a linux client…
Port for Linux.
SD is an independent dev
nope.
and it’s their choice to release a linux client…
nope.
oh really all knowing man, just saying “nope” isn’t a bright answer. Do you mind teach us what you know? or are you a postwhore?
They are hired by Bethesda and working for Bethesda.
And it’s Bethesda which decides if yes/no they want to unlock the money to do a linux version of the game. (which will never happens since it’s using steamworks).
And i’m definitively not a "postwhor"e, don’t start insulting others members of the forum, it’s not allowed.
Strange thread.
I’ve only read untill page 8 or 9.
It’s more like Windows against GNU/Linux.
Actually this thread isn’t about which OS is the best.
This thread is about to let the publisher/developer know how many potential players are interested in a GNU/Linux port.
And I’m also interested in a GNU/Linux port of Brink.
By the way GNU/Linux is a herd of penguins.

brink is developed by SD and published by Bethesda! they aren’t working for Bethesda! Steamworks isn’t a impediment to port the game to linux!
PS: i didn’t insult you as a postwhore! I’ve asked you, which has a different meaning!
Let’s reiterate: SD hasn’t got any real interest, but some of the guys there might be willing to donate some spare time to get it running. No guarantees.

Then I guess that all reviews saying that it’s a bethesda game are wrong ? Oh wait, the game dev is only a part of the full game …
Really, how so ?
As usual, my opinion is unchanged. Windows XP, Windows 7, and Linux, all are good operating systems, each with different advantages and disadvantages. I will likely run Brink on Windows 7. If it happens to run on Ubuntu, all the better. Business is driven mostly by economic forces, not altruistic ones, and the fact is that Linux is a niche market. So while I wholeheartedly support Linux, I also acknowledge that a Linux port is not guaranteed, especially with the main focus being on the console market these days…
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2010-08-12-valve-on-steam-part-two-interview
Told ya, it’s not going to happen any soon.
Valve won’t formally acknowledge it until they know they’re going to release and support it. Same deal happened with the Mac client. It was in development for a while, and during that time Valve’s official support pages listed it as not in development etc, until when they were just about to release it.
Saves them from having a public backlash if they decide they want to can it, since they’ve never announced anything to begin with! Kinda like politicians…
But yeah, official Steam on Linux is more of a wait-and-see thing.
(ps the Windows Steam client actually has specific Wine hacks that make it run better under Linux, so I would assume the one or two guys that use Linux at Valve probably popped that in - probably the same ones writing the client in their own time).
i truly wish there was going to be a linux port, but oh well. you can’t have everything.
There are reviews of the game already??? But it’s not even release man, have you been consuming something made you high? or are suffering of deliriums? because I’ve just checked most gaming website and all that i’ve seen is publisher Bethesda and Developer SD, as i wrote in my previous post, but wait, you failed to understand the meaning of publisher and developer!!!
Steamwork is a framework for steam, in a basically view it’s a network framework, i hope that you can understand so far, right? As it’s used for delivering purpose and networking, so basically the game can be ported without steamwork built-in oh i’ve forgot to mention that steam and steamwork are OS independent! SD has a good networking system as showed in etqw (which include better ingame VOIP than the one used in steam based games like l4d2)!
Oh let me tell you something about my life, I do work in the gaming market and i’m a programmer for cross platform games.
Moving a bit towards Steam:
So Mac would be able to get it, since Steam runs on the platform, yet I wonder would Brink then still be released at Aspyr? Just as ETQW did or is there a chance it will happen inhouse?
Oh let me tell you something about my life, I do work in the gaming market and i’m a programmer for cross platform games.
So let me play the devil’s advocate here: how many players of those games use Linux compared to the total size of the userbase? How quickly and reliably can you get the game running on all platforms, and keep them supported? How much does it pay off?
Maybe the answers to those questions might give some perspective to this thread. Thanks in advance for answering them.
(BTW: Written in Linux, Mozilla Firefox + Vimperator)
dude i don’t count how many user we have on each platform honestly but over one third of my sells are on linux side… info taken from the number of uploads done for the linux client
well fortunately it did pay off! sure it’s insignificant if you try to compare an ETQW games worth several thousands as budget! indies games have better success being available on many platform, even though they don’t have such propaganda and adds that an “AAA” would have. it took me a lot of time to get my game supported on all OS. thanks to that i got more income than i expected! making a game with no budget is way harder than having one… now most indie started like that with no cash managed to get some good money to fund new projects. My worst nightmare on linux is the lack standards it’s a shame :o. Mac was harder  and windows i ended buy it on my PC…

i don’t think that it will be ported at all… on the wikipedia it says PC and consoles…
PS: heh why is PC considerated as windows based computer??? from what i learned from college and self-study PC only used for hardware platfrom… not for OS platform.
blame Apple “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” advertising
there’s more pointing to a Mac port now there’s a Mac Steam client although no guarantees.
for Linux maybe only through Wine or POL
we even might have a linux client in the future too! butmac port of brink through and linux client port of steam are at rumours/deliriums that i want to believe but nothing proves it!
Hm,
it’s almost year now since i asked… are there any news regarding Linux Port ? any words from SD about it ?
