I have interest in the stuff that is running on my so called pentium 3 router, and yes i like live statistical information, raw data. Windows can do that too but not as a basic…basically, windows is for the lazy, you cannot deny that
…
Many people just like linux, live with it amigo ;)
i don’t care whoever runs linux or if brink comes on linux or not. i just find linux fanatics disappointing who defend their os of choice without thinking at a global scale. seriously, do you really think that having a pc running as a router is so awesome for other people? it costs money because of electric power consumption and it’s an additional heat source. also, statistical information is not of interest for the vast majority of people. and why would windows be for the lazy? only because you decided to put your energy into finding out how this or that works on an os doesn’t mean other people want to waste their life with that.
Joe, you’re just trolling. You don’t have anything constructive to say and for someone who pretends to not care you spend awful lot of time in this thread. There are 18 (eighteen !) posts by Joe999 in this thread. Every single one of them is negative or at least dismissive. You don’t behave like someone who doesn’t care. You behave like someone obsessed with the intent of making a Linux port not happening. As if a Linux port would do you some harm. And your posts are so full of fallacies it’s not even funny.
If you mean what you say, go away from this thread and don’t come back.

there’s a difference between not caring if a game gets released on a certain platform and discussing on a forum whether a port makes sense or not.
everyone is entitled for an opinion, myself included. if you don’t like that i think that a port doesn’t make sense, go here: http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/profile.php?do=ignorelist and enter “joe999” into the textfield and hit the “okay” button.
The funny thing actually is, is that with the creation of the thread and the various posts in here, it’s already made clear that people are thinking and longing for a linux port, and the windows posts in these threads do not change anything about that.
It shows that people on linux just want some AAA titles and are willing to lobby for it.
Sligtlhy off topic, in the indie game bundle it showed that Linux users are far more willing to pay considerable amounts of money in contrast to Mac and Windows users. Now that is some food for thought, especially when there are flames out there that state that Linux users are cheapskates and that they pirate nearly everything and do no respect copyright or ip.
and Joe, by making more and more posts in here just makes the thread longer, showing the title more but also the support for linux more, which I certainly get from your posts isn’t what you’re after
but hey everyone is entitled to their opinion and OS choice. It’s just whatever floats your boat in the end.
Now you’ve all got that out of your system, let’s get back to not having a Windows v. Linux debate.
Indeed that seems to be a factor beyond the control of SD or Bethesda that would dictate whether a port was even possible.
If there was a linux Steam client, I’m pretty sure Linux ports would be forthcoming on several games, what better incentive ?
Well there was rumour and screenshots but no announcement.
Given the strategy to establish a beachhead on the Mac I don’t see why a similar approach to Linux wouldn’t be in the works.
Because the percentage of linux users playing on PC (aka not servers) is ridiculously low ?
But that’s the point. They’re probably not expecting to capture an existing market, they’re looking to create one. I also think it adds a lot of value to Steam/Steamworks if they can offer developers a way to reach three platforms even if two of them are currently small.
I suspect there is one coming but I don’t think it’s that high a priority at Valve at the moment.
Just hope they don’t release it at the same pace they release their other games!
True. I’m also sure they’d use feedback on the Mac roll out to decide whether to do Linux or not.
Well they’re obviously doing work on it - a incomplete Linux build popped up out of the Mac closed beta, though they’ve pulled the Linux files off their servers off in about May.
Pretty much, haha.
This is apparently a quote sourced from an email with a Valve employee:
It would make sense that if they were trying to make a decision, they might do a proof of concept first. They probably also want to see how the Mac effort pans out, which could take a while.
So, yeah, I guess, if Mac is successful then I guess we might just see an official Steam client around. Here’s hoping!
Q: Final question, and one I’m sure you’re not super-keen to answer, but I promised one of our tech guys I’d ask it. What truth is there to rumours that you’re also working on a Linux version of Steam?
Doug Lombardi: There’s no Linux version that we’re working on right now. …
Told ya, it’s not going to happen any soon.
They haven’t exactly been eager with announcing the Linux client in all the interviews but they released the not so successful 360 and PS3 ports after a year or something. Maybe they’ll do the same thing with Mac and Linux this time. I think all Linux users should wait until that.
I’ll be waiting for the Linux client SD!

Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo is liveblogging the event and captured this info from Carmack’s speech:
* 2:35: Says id was looking at Quake Live as a bellweather for Linux, says that more people play Quake Live on Linux than on Mac, but it’s a small amount * 2:35: Says he uses Linux on his rocket work but that he’s disappointed by Linux desktops * 2:35: talks about how there’s a lack of “give a damn about user experience” on them * 2:36: but he said he installed a new version recently and found it “neat,” that it is coming together and works nicely now * 2:36: But still isn’t about to put a game out on it.
