Please, help me. I can't even install.

(shmegegge) #1

I get the following message precisely 86% of the way through installing pak0.pk3 EVERY SINGLE TIME I TRY TO INSTALL THE GAME, NO MATTER WHERE I TRY TO INSTALL IT OR WHERE I GOT THE FILE FROM.

“An I/O error occurred while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file.”

I have downloaded this file from fileplanet several times, from 3d gamers, and from fileshack, and it happens EVERY TIME. I delete the old file before downloading the new one each time, and it still keeps happening.

At first, I tried to install the game into an “Enemy Territory” subdirectory of my RTCW directory (I’d already uninstalled RTCW, but left the directory and the save games) and that’s when I first got the message, but then I couldn’t rollback the partial install. still can’t, in fact. Enemy Territory is sitting in my add/remove programs list unable to be uninstalled because windows can’t find the install log. Any time I try to install the game to it’s DEFAULT directory, I still get the message, but I can rollback the install after I get it. What’s up?! Others are playing it, so why the fuck is this happening to me?!

my system, if that helps:

dual amd athlon mp 2000+
1 gig RAM
nvidia geforce4 ti4600
hercules gametheatre xp 5.1
western digital caviar 120GB 1200jb (8 mb cache) ide ata 100 hard drive
thanks in advance.

p.s. - anyone who wants to ask something obvious like “do you have enough hard drive space” please refrain. I have tons, and that’s the kind of thing I’d check.

make sure you delete all temporary files from the previous downloads.

(Pippi) #3

Interesting, what OS do you have?

(shmegegge) #4

Windows XP sp2

(shmegegge) #5

Where are the temporary files put?

(shmegegge) #6

seriously, this sucks. someone please help.

(alexwryt) #7

You have Windows XP service Pack 2, that is probably your problem; I believe SP2 is only in beta version.

(GreenHit) #8

yep… im having the same problem. i think ive downloaded ET 6 times today :frowning: Same crash at 86% sometimes lower, like one download only installed to 7%. Ive tried this on both my computers which are connected to the same dsl modem (Arescom NetDSL 1000) and i get the same results.

BTW im using XP SP1 and I have no hardware in common with shmegegge save the video card but that doesn’t seem like it would be the cause.

My buddy had this same problem. He burned the file to Cd and Woot! he was golden… give it a try.

(frito) #10

I had a similar problem with an unrelated installer. It seemed that some corrupt exe file I ran awhile back caused the problem. My solution was format then reinstall the OS. :frowning:

(magaman) #11

My clan buddy downloaded it to his laptop and installed it to his desktop through the network and it installed fine. He was having the same problem and thats how he got it to work.

(shmegegge) #12

I gave that a shot, and got the same problem again.

(MAN-AT-ARMS) #13

Sounds like bad RAM to me…

(shmegegge) #14

sorry, that was a typo. it’s Service Pack 1. I only install what I get from the windows update server.

(GreenHit) #15

hey i dont think it is bad RAM. I have 0 problems with every other game,
and it would also mean i have bad ram in my laptop. I honestly dont think it is RAM.

(shmegegge) #16

Yeah, the bad RAM thing sounds like taking a shot in the dark. I really don’t see any evidence that RAM is the problem.

(MAN-AT-ARMS) #17

Not a shot in the dark…that’s an error frequently associated with bad memory modules.

I am having the exact same problem, 86% into the instalation and i get the error! when it is doing the Pack0.pk3 file now i run a 56k and it takes 15 or so hours for me to download and i have done this 2 times already, i KNOW its not a RAM issue because i have 256mbs of Kingston Rambus ram and its not his OS because i have win 98se so it must be some other problem, is any of you using a Download Speeder? like Gozilla, DaP or anything like that? if anyone knows a way to fix this PLEASE let us know!! i have also contacted https://activision.custhelp.com and sent them the problem and if they have a fix i will post it here ASAP

(Pippi) #19

If there are several ppl out there who have the same problem, you should post the following things:

  • Exact motherboard brand and type, including the kind of chipset used
  • Brand and version number of you virusscanner
  • Type of download manager (DAP, Gozilla, etc) because they can corrupt files
  • Brand and version number of your firewall
  • Internet Explorer version
  • and the rest of the specs offcourse, like RAM, processor, harddisk, etc

I also have some suggestions: try installing it in Windows “safe mode”, that should fix most problems. And if you are using an VIA chipset on your motherboard, you could install the 4-in-1 drivers:
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2. Don’t install them unless you’re having trouble. Try testing your memory with this program:
http://www.memtest86.com.

That’s it for now

man that memtest 86 takes hours I ran through all the tests once it took like 30 hours or something.
