Background:

Started playing online MP games ‘properly’ when RtCW first came out - I settled on the tag ‘EvilSock’ as my player name. The name actually comes from a time when I had a kitten and used to tease it with an old smelly white sock called ‘EvilSock’ - ok so far?

The problem

Well, I had a very embaressing experience the other day - I was playing on Fusters Quake2 Deathmatch server (very good btw and always has at least 9 or 10 players which is amazing imho) - I used my normal tag ‘EvilSock’ and within 10 minutes got a massive amount of abuse, accused of being a name thief and got kicked off the server!

The facts

I googled for a bit and whilst there are such things as the win32/Evilsock Trojan and even the EvilSock monkey conspiracy, there was / is also a guy from Quake days who was something of a texture / map designer with the same name - shit.

Now I’m in a quandary, I’ve been playing as evilsock for three years, ppl know me as evilsock on the servers I play on - fuckit, I even have a web-site with the same domain name, but it seems that the name originally belongs to someone else.

Has anyone else had this kind of trouble before?

The way I figure it, you didn’t “steal” the name, you came up with it independently, and, moreover, the other EvilSock seems to only be popular only inside certain circles. So, stick with your chosen handle. With all of the people out there playing online games, and this number incresing constantly, there is going to be some overlap in names anyway, so why be worried when it happenes? Obvious name hijacking, and trying to trash someone else’s reputation aside.
The other option is to find a unique way to spell your name, do you think the ‘y’ in my handle is a typo?

Apparently pgh is the most popular net name for boys… sigh!

No troubles before no, but had loads of hassle with people on IRC umpteen times claiming myself, and others have ‘stolen’ there nicks. Hilarious.

My name is pretty easy if you can figure out the acronyms…
NCB is for Naval Consolidated Brig (where I work)
FC1(SW) is my rate and warfare designator in the Navy (Fire Controlman First Class )
Always a different way to come up with a name for a game.

I was playing on a server once and a guy was named “Virus”, so another guy comes on and the virus immidiately starts yelling at him “WTF You stupid name stealer! Change your name… etc.”. The worst part was that Virus (the one that was on) was in a clan. It kinda made me laugh because virus isnt really a unique name. Nonetheless I bashed on the virus that was in the server calling him newb and the sort and then I left.

Then there was another time some guy came onto a server (this is RTCW) and he changed his name to various other names on the server and started tking. After a few kicks he changed his name to mine, accused me of stealing his name, and I was promptly kicked. I came back on the server to be kicked again. I once again came back and went apeshit on all of them.
