Phantom Complaint Master Thread

Fact remains, I havent seen such huge widespread outrage over any other merc update. So id say the community discussion on reddit, youtube, nexon, and warchest has a whole lot of validity.[/quote]

I think it is mainly because of the cloak.
There is a lot of people who consider any kind of cloak in general as “low skill”, its a critic you see a lot here on the forums too the opinion that Phantom just has no place in the game because certain people think that their playstyle should define DB.

What Phantom probably needs is a small nerf to the cloakshield and 10-20 HP less but thats about it everything else is playstyle and other (later coming) mercs who counter him.

(DMaster2) #202

No it’s not needed at all. It only made the game far more frustrating.
But i’ll join the darkside soon, i have almost 50k now. If other people can play dirty bomb in easy mode i want to do so myself.

(RuleofBooKz) #203

so good u made an entire thread about this - finally we can talk about the issue that we have not talked about at all yet, in all the other threads, the same as yours, for days and days

(sinKrin) #204

Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms yo

(RuleofBooKz) #205

Menace was the strongest of the prequels tho. best of a bad bunch imo

(watsyurdeal) #206

Yes he does, because characters like him are designed to pick off people who aren’t sticking with their team or doing anything that benefits them as a whole.

Sparks staying at the back with REVIVR trying to Snipe? A Vasilli not pushing with the front line? A proxy going out on her own, and Aura rushing in instead of staying with her team.

His effectiveness is only as good as the enemy team allows it to be, bad team play amplifies his presence in the game, but that doesn’t mean he’s overpowered, it just means people need to get their shit together and stop blaming the game for their mistakes.

You don’t sit there and blame the AWP for your loss for example when the only idea you have is to rush him or go AWP yourself, rather than just buy smokes or flashes, and use them at the proper spots.

You don’t blame the Engineer for being broken in TF2 when you have no fucking clue how to make a push.

(Nervous) #207

It should do just one thing, CLOAK that is more than enough to get around the back and take a sniper or healer with stabby stab.

Giving it a shield along with great health is just plain damm stupid.

(Ghosthree3) #208

Honestly this is what I’d like to see changed as an experiment at least. Cloak absorb reduced to 40, hit frames on heavy swing Katana shortened significantly, possibly reduce health to 110.

I think this is more than fair.

(triteCherry) #209

From what i’ve seen people have been getting used to Phantom very quickly. I feel his cloak will end up like Marytrdom. It will be interesting to see what happens.

(Azure Emulation) #210

He’s a good idea, just broken the way he currently is. The fact that he can get easy melee kills gives the impression that Dirty Bomb isn’t a skill-based game. It should be a high-risk, high-reward endeavor, but it doesn’t seem that way at all.

Also, unlike Nader and Rhino, who have extremely loud notifications for their presence, Phantom is barely detectable in the heat of the battle, and the tankiness pours more salt on the wounds.

wow another informative post thanks OP

(Shakaali) #214

After reading a lot of comments about phantom being OP or it ruined a game i wanted to contribute to these forums as well.
It isn’t op on my opinion it’s well balanced. I don’t own one but still i can outplay phantoms.
Most common reason it’s “op” is that it can one-shot you, well there’s a lot of other things that can one-shot you as well sparks revivr (Headshot) and naders grenades (direct hit).
Teamwork is more crucial when there’s phantoms around. You need to check corners and watch areas around objectives more often (after all it’s not TDM).
Other reason for phantom being op is cloak… well after practice you notice it from far away making phantom’s life even harder.

Good tip for people that phantom might one-hit.
you’re more agile than phantom use walljump. If you time this correctly it’s 100% change phantom misses with his melee. (done this lots of times)

And something else you might consider before you judge phantom.
With 2 of my friends over skype decided we are the top phantoms well any of us don’t own phantom so we decided we do it with fragger after all it has same speed and hp as phantom. :stuck_out_tongue:
We played 3 games melee only with occasionally grenades (which i suck throwing at) and guess what we won those 3 rounds and were at top3 players every time because people suck at watching flank and communicate. Also my friend got Ace on one round and we won lot of melee fights against phantoms. I know they weren’t really good players but most of phantoms atm aren’t.

Hia guys, so OBVIOUSLY phantom has taken over the fourms reddit today (day of release). Moreover in-game players say Phantom has “single handedly broken Dirty bomb”. Ight, that cool. So now that we have a “OP” character; how can we FIX the PROBLEM and find a SOLUTION. I’ve heard many arguements:
*Arugements are to be constructive in a way to FIX this “broken” mess.

Arguement 1:
Phantom has been released TOO EARLY; At this point in the game phantom has no counter. A Reddit user’s agurment states: “The problem I have is that I think they released him too early. He should have come after Redeye or Stoker, as they are arguably his counters (Fire bombs and Infrared vision).
Edit: Consider this. The Phantom player extends into the enemy zone after a wipe, cloaks and waits. The competent Redeye player on your team anticipates this and activates Infrared. He can call out where the Phantom is or kill him on his own.” -Wh1teCr0w

Aruguement 2:
Phantom is supposed to be a stealth “ninja”. Well OBVIOUSLY this is not the case in dirty Bomb, lol. So a nerf to the stealth tank like shield would be a step in the right direction? IDK what the devs over at dirty bomb intended the role of Phantom to be… But this guy is the son of Hulk and Spiderman. You go balls to the wall and come out of a gun fight alive only using your whit and a sword. Sounds like bear grilles to me… tbh…From the reddit fourms: “*he can call out where phantom is, get all his bullets sponged up in phantoms shield and die.
I really don’t think the invisibility is nearly as much of a problem as the tankiness his shield provides. In every other game the quick, stealthy assassin is incredibly squishy - for a good reason.” -DropZeHamma

Arguement 3:
Well… some say its time for the nerf hammer to rain havoc on Phantom. “’‘Phantom is a merc first featured in close beta 1. The class had the highest Melee damage. The class during the first portion of CB1 was extremely over powered, later mid CB1 was nerfed too much, making him weak, and later was removed near the end of CB1 for two reasons.
He was too hard to balance
He didn’t contribute to the objective’’
Then why the fuck have they released him now. He clearly hasn’t become any easier to balance and as a result is broken as hell.” -Aries37

Now honestly; these are only three arguements against phantom, but there are PLENTY more. Yet, there are PLENTY ways of fixing this character. A “Nerf” needed; or maybe remove the character until a counter character is introduced. But in all honesty… One hitting 33% of the mercs in dirty bomb is pretty OP considering the fact that you have the health of a skyhammer and a given shield that allows you to be invincible to proxy’s counter, hence making her useless against phantom. One approach to fix this character is to make him more ninja like, maybe the cloaking should be a weakness and make phantom recieve double damage?

*This isn’t a time of heated arguement, but a time to be constructive and FIX the PROBLEM. #Phantom4Fixing

I discovered this game about two weeks ago and already have 77 hours played. I absolutely love most aspects of the game and was considering trying to get all my friends to start playing it with me instead of CS:GO.

But I don’t see how I’m supposed to find any joy in playing a game that has a class that is so cheap an skill-less as Phantom. Before the update pretty much everything was fair, if you died it was your own fault for having worse aim than the other person or for doing something stupid.

Now you die from someone who can run around the whole map invisible and next to immortal and kill you in one hit. This is not fun. It’s anti fun. It sure as hell doesn’t belong in a game like this.

I’ll give it another shot tomorrow, unless it turns out I’m just a scrub who can’t counter the class (which is entirely possible) I’m quitting this game until Phantom gets heavily nerfed. It’s simply not fun at all to play anymore.

(TheDoctorHax) #217

I recently played a Terminal match against a team who had a Phantom. At the last point he cloaked but I saw him (his visibility while cloaked is not the issue here), he was running towards me and I sank about 4 headshots into him followed by 3 body shots (He long jumped towards me and I didn’t adjust my aim). Then after that I was dead because he one shot me with his katana, and decloaked with full hp… That was one of many encounters where the only reason the Phantom escaped was because of the damage mitigation. Not because of his skill or because he was invisible, but because I could not damage him as he ran away. I have seen so many complaints that Phantom has ruined the game, and while I would not take it so far as to say he has ruined the game for me personally, I can see why some people are angry with it. Phantom one-shots 80-90 hp classes and can kill the rest with one more swipe. Being that I love to main Proxy, I have next to no chance vs any Phantom, because even if I see him, all he needs to do is get somewhat close and press RMB, and then I’m faced with the spawn screen. Now I would like to pose a couple questions to the reader. 1. What are some balance changes that you can think of that could make Phantom more balanced. and 2. Does the introduction of Phantom anger you enough that you are thinking of leaving Dirty Bomb? Hopefully this can be a place where the devs can come and see some helpful information on the thoughts of the community. Thanks for your participation and patience in this ridiculously long post.

(Azure Emulation) #218

So now that this is happening, what do you guys think its the most reasonable way to have him nerfed? Nerfed in a way that preserves what seems to be an infiltrator role in the Recon Merc archetype?

Here’s what I said on the Steam forums:

Balanced or not, he simply isn’t fun to play against. Actually, as far as I’ve seen in other games, tanky melee characters in an FPS game have NEVER been fun to play against, so I’m glad these nerfs are coming.

The most reasonable nerfs would a reduction to his base HP and Refractive Armor HP. His stealth is already a major advantage in closing gaps and landing the first crippling hit, whether it’s with his melee or SMG. He doesn’t need to be a tanky Spy.

(puzzlingSafe) #219

1000 other players have said it… Every game I have played since this merc has been a joke and ppl are complaining nonstop. F reviving F the objective and F any kind of teamwork. This is one of the worst things you could possibly do to the game. Who the F thought a invisi player that kills you with a sword from 5 feet away was a good idea. You got lots of issues with the game still and you put this rolling heap of crap out. GG and thanks for a game that was semi fun to play and wasnt totally ruined by players throwing money at you for a while.

(Cesmode) #220

Between the stealthing and one-shot melee from stealth while youre planting C-4, diffusing C-4, repairing objectives, etc…do you think Phantom belongs in the game?

I personally do not think the rogue-y stealth archetype has any place in a game where people literally would set up camp in a nice spot and “hold the line” (to coin a phrase). This sort of thought holds true in Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc.

How about you?
