People not listening because they think themselves too good?

(warning, bit of a rant)
I guess we’ve all had evenings on ET that just make you feel like you’re done with the game and are ready to just uninstall it – especially if it’s several nights in a row that you have nothing but bad games for whatever reason(s). Recently, ever since I traded in my trusty allied engineer -post for an engineering position in the axis forces actually, I’ve found myself more and more bothered by people ruining matches because they just don’t want to listen to reason. I have to assume it’s mainly an axis problem; if you’re on the allied team you can pretty much be sure most people know the objectives and how to accomplish them I suppose. At first playing as an axis (I’d always played as an ally before) was a whole new experience, fun especially because after playing allied for so long you pretty much know how to get a lot of mine kills as you know what paths the allied team is likely to follow and where they’ll least expect mines to be placed. Keeping mines in varying spots during a match will usually rake up kills like there’s no tomorrow, especially on a map like Oasis.

I quickly found myself becoming frustrated by certain things while playing however, mainly by a phenomenon I’d not seen too often when playing allied; what I’m talking about is players, good players actually, being absolutely stone-deaf to any sort of reason and ruining games because of it. I’m not a really great player myself, meaning I won’t be at the top of the XP list, but I do know how to play the game. Opening the back door or going down the beach on Battery for example can’t be excused. If I’ve seen the axis lose because of that once I’ve seen it a million times; it’s just something you don’t do. Why then have I seen it practically every time I’ve played on the axis team? While playing ET yesterday and today I’ve actually found myself just sitting there guarding the back door on Battery – ironically not because the enemy team might come through but because your own team is going outside to have their pants stolen. Why do they insist on doing that even when you tell them it will lose the map, which incidentally it did – every time I’ve seen someone go outside the axis lost. Eventually a game of Battery tends to come down to babysitting of some sort, sitting at the back waiting for the disguised cvopses to come strolling in. Of course where it concerns newbies I can understand they don’t even know what the back door is when you tell them not to open it, but strangely enough I mostly see this from players who are actually good. On a few occasions I’ve even seen players waiting at the door, not opening it because they see someone else is present, and then when you turn your back you hear the sound of the hinges creaking meaning they were just waiting for their own teammates to leave.

I seem to notice some people advocate TKing teammates who go onto the beach or out the door and I’ve to say I’m leaning more and more towards it as well. In my topic about Fuel Dump and the roof door there I talked about people ignoring the teamchat and doing their own thing, losing the game in the process, and I guess noone who’s ever played allied is a stranger to teammates XP whoring to the extreme and pretty well ignoring the objective, but at least most of the team will know what to do and will work towards winning the map. There’s not a lot you can really do wrong if all you have to do next is destroy a tank barrier or place dynamite at a door. On the axis team however it appears to be more rule than exception to have five medics, most of them out attacking, and only one or two engineers who are actually needed when dynamite is planted at a critical game objective. On Battery it seems everyone wants to be a field ops, resulting in five or six players of that class, no engineers, and most importantly no cvops who in my view has to be present to satchel the ramp. Today I even had the guy who was at the top of the team’s XP list, a good player by all means, tell me you don’t need a cvops on Battery. The result was that within five minutes the base was overrun by allies – from both sides actually as I was unable to stop people from going out the back and ensuring a steady stream of allies coming from the back as well. I know it’s only a game but dammit, you don’t play Monopoly with someone who eats the dice and makes the game unplayable either.

What’s your opinion on these matters? Should someone who goes out on the beach on Battery be TKed? Are these mainly problems on public servers? Are there too many Quake and UT players coming over who feel they don’t need to listen to ‘lesser’ players when they have something to say? And most of all is there any way to block to back door on Battery, with mines perhaps?

Well firstly I’d like to state I’m a big fan of going out the back door on battery. I’ve stated before that I don’t solely play the game to win… I play it to have fun. Me going out the backdoor is NOT ruining the game for everybody else. I’ve actually sucessfully help hold the allies to the beach many times because I’ve gone out back.

There is NO one way to play the game.

I used to think that TK’ing teammates who went out to the beach was in good form, until I realized that unless you’re gibbing their bodies totally you’re just helping the allies get a uniform, having them save their bullets and their time.

While a covert ops most certainly helps keep the assault ramp down, it’s not ALWAYS going to work. There’s ways to get around everything in this game, the trick is just finding it.

Rock Paper Scissors

Another thing, if that guy told you a Covert was not needed but you thought it was… why then did you listen to him? To prove him wrong?

While this game does rely on tremendous teamwork, NOBODY is obligated to do ANYTHING that they don’t want to. It’s the same deal in RtCW. The back of the manual it states that Medics do NOT have to give health, Luitenants do NOT have to give ammo… they’re not there to serve you, they’re there to play the game and enjoy it just like you.

It’s obvious that if you want a less chance of winning a game, then you shouldn’t hand out ammo/health packs, whatever… but there is no rule that says you MUST do what your class is made for.

If people don’t want to listen because they think they know it all, then fuck em. Go to a different server where maybe you’ll have people who will listen, and try to work together as a team, and want to win.

As for me, I’ve learned that there is no ONE way to play the game… and if there was… nobody would be playing right now because it would be the most boring experience of your lives.

So… good games! Enjoy yourself! Don’t let anyone else get you down. You’re not there to serve them and vice versa, you’re there to enjoy yourselves. :drink:

Only times I have ever got response when I`ve asked something from my teammates is basically at back door in battery as an allies with axis uniform or in fueldump in the same purpose. Even then it is only about 50% chance to get confirmation and that chance is after second question or third question asked…

If any readers of this thread has got any players to change class by asking some specific class support from team chat please respond to this thread. I doubt there is any  .

Here is few cases happened to me where I can`t split up in two or three. oasis allies: minespotter cvop, engineer or medic following good engineers. axis: fieldop or medic.
battery allies: cvop(getting suit), field op throwing airstrikes to top area, medic or mortar user. axis: medic, cvop or field op using artillery to ramp area.
gold rush allies:engineer, panzerfaust or medic. axis: no cvops.
radar allies: more ppl to command post spawn point… cvop, panzerfaust or medic. axis: second defender for side entrance
railgun allies: stop the train. axis: move the train.

This is most of the reason why I play every class. I enjoy them all to begin with, so it doesn’t bother me to pick up the slack where its needed. No matter what the map, I’ll go whichever class has the fewest/weakest players. I may be kidding myself but it seems like I win a lot more games when I play this way.

/me unleashes lynch mob on AmazinGLarrY for going out the back door

(TAngelo) #7

I’ll respond a little more in-depth later (pretty late here right now) but for now I’d just like to respond only to this:

“railgun allies: stop the train. axis: move the train.”

:eek3: :eek3: :eek3: That’s absolutely brilliant; simple yet rivetting in its simplicity – now if only we could think of a way to get that idea across to the majority of the people who play ET as most don’t seem aware of it :banghead: :bash:

(Cyber-Knight) #8

i’ll say this again, there needs to be a:

"vsay_team “ReadDamnChatBox” voice chat!

(amazinglarry) #9

No… there needs to be a team chat…

vsay_team “Stop being pussies and while they’re all dead!!!”

I finally realized what makes me upset in this game…

I was in a server on battery as allies and my ENTIRE team wouldn’t go past the hallway where that MG42 is… regardless if we had killed the entire axis team… the allies would keep hanging back cause they were WAY too cautious… we eventually won the map 10 minutes later though, when SOMEBODY got the balls to run through and plant…

vsay_team “GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY!”

vsay_team “Grow some balls!!!”

(Cyber-Knight) #10

yes, one of the horrors of RtCW and ET.

I play on RtCW Happy Penguin Depot, if you’ve been an Ally on that map and experienced the Hallway Warehouse experience, you’ll know the the problem of:

No matter how big the crowd gets, all the players continue to just hold the line, no one dares to rush forward. It just keeps getting bigger and bigger until the enemy places some nice grenades and panzers to kill them all.

(Loffy) #11

Before a round starts, I can type “let’s kill em all” or “first attack is a fast one” or something like that. But I only do it occationally.
Then during the game I can type “enemy spawns at 10 and 40” and “tunnel exit is safe atm” (on Oasis) sometimes. I know that this information is valuable to someone in my team even though there is no reply. (Sometimes I do get a v41 (affirmative) from a team mate.)
Yes, I can go out the back on Battery. I do it on average every 20th game on Battery. There is nothing inheritagely (or however it is spelled) in this. But I am very focused, keep an eye on the respawn clock and I nade my corpse if need be. (I play for fun on public servers, but always to make my team win. The objective is the main thing.)
ET is a very good game and I enjoy it much.

Dude, I feel your pain.

But on a public server you can’t always find the help ya need.

(fattakin) #13

I had a great (annoying) game yesterday and i was class changing away to suit the map - up comes Oasis, my Engy baby so i get the wall blown in a few mins - i then realise we have 5 other engys, no medics and they were doing fuck all - i had about 7 plants (blew both guns) and no other engys got a plant - i was crying in teamchat - ’ can someone else be a medic, i’ll get the guns ’ fcuk me they werent deaf - just blind as no one changed class.

Changing class to suit the map is fun way to play the game - Allied Engy on Radar - blow the doors and change to fl ops or medic for the good of the team!!!

Another thought, which is our policy to play Seawall Battery:

Axis go to occupy the command post at the very beginning of the round, eliminate incoming Allies at the narrow path with rifle grenades, panzerfaust and airstrikes. The access to command post before Allied engineers’ arrival, is given by the first Axis Field Op who calls artillery / airstrike. If Axis Field Ops are trustworthy to suppress Allies’ initiative rush, the secured command post could provide Axis more firepower support to secure the backdoor. If Axis could extend their defence line to the cliff and throw their firepower down to the shore, Allies will surely suffer. If not, the narrow path still provide defender advantage to stop Allied invasion. And, the built command post is an alarm, which is triggered when Allied Covert Ops / Engs destroy it.

Opening the backdoor isn’t a problem to me. The real problem of Seawall Battery defence is, leaving backdoor blank. A veteran player shall know to observe the situation. Moving to backdoor for reinforcement when Allied assault ramp firepower is weakened, is an essential basic. Another point is ‘firepower density’. Axis don’t have to deploy all their persons at west bunker, because approximately 2 field ops + 2~3 medics + 1 panzerfaust soldier and 2 covert ops are sufficient for guarding the assault ramp well. Other Axis shall go to guard the command post and backdoor.

This is the way that I and my friends play this map. In fact, I am always guarding the command post, because I am not good at airstriking but more familiar with syringe and rifle grenades.

Amen to all of the above.

(Vengeance) #16

Im not listening to this thread, because im 2 good

seriously though i hate ppl who hang back when they should be attacking. I sometimes have to check im not on a OLTL server

(g00se) #17

I understand how important it is to have some axis on defense in Battery. Especially at the gun controls themselves. There is hardly anyone on axis back there and to be honest it is just damn boring sitting back there with your thumb up your ass.

Someone should code in some incentive to hang out by gun controls. Maybe a projection screen with some good movies on it or something. And yes…those type of movies would be nice.

(amazinglarry) #18

LoL, that would rock…

Maybe even some Mario games or something would be sweet.

Ok time to get hammered. :drink:

Going out should be allowed, however returning through the back door should be met with force. Could be a TK or a dead Allied CovOp. Who knows? The standing rule for backdoor defenders who don’t know how to use their command map should be to allow NOBODY to enter, friend or foe. After all, anyone outside the back door has health and ammo cabinets, so once they leave they don’t need resupplying. Besides, always checking your command map helps out a lot.

(amazinglarry) #20

that’s pretty much what I do… this is what I announce to the team before I go out… I can’t remember what movie it’s loosely based on…

“If anybody sees me come back through the backdoor… kill me, because I don’t plan on making it back!”
