pc over console?

(SockDog) #41

While I’ll avoid the PC vs Console argument I’ll say that there do appear to be practicalities on platforms which have a bearing on what the gamer expects and so how a game is made.

(Speider) #42

Most new PC’s are more powerful than the now-gen consoles, therebygranting better framerate at higher resolution, and longer viewing distances.
Consoles, however, has the advantage of developers knowing excactly which hardware you have, and thereby gives a greatly reduced optimisation cycle. (single/multi core, type of graphics card etc).

With keyboard and mouse, you have increased performance on targeting, as the mouse gives you speed and accuracy of aim.
With a controller, you have less targeting performance, but the advantage of simultaneous multitasking.
(two 360 degree sticks with incremental range and all shoulder/stick buttons at once).

Anyone can say that the new alienware is better than any console, but not everyone has the new alienware.

Both has pros and cons.
I have both.
Yay for gaming

BTW, me and 6 mates are getting this for the 360, as it is my preffered shooter platform for
this type of game. From all I’ve seen, splash damage is doing a great job giving all versions
the tender love they need to make you able to freerun and shoot people in the face with
reckless abandon no matter your platform of choice.
Next shooter game i’ll be getting on PC is Operation Flashpoint

(Speider) #43

And the game will look good on consoles when playing competitively, yes.

(Crytiqal) #44

What type of game? FPS shooters? Preferred on console?

(Speider) #45

Shooters that are more action-oriented and “arcadey”
Like i said, Operation Flashpoint will likely be my next PC buy.
I play Crysis 2 on PC with a controller, but that is, for me anyways,
a more action-oriented “arcadey” game.

Also depends on type of ingame actions, interface etc.
Borderlands with me on controller vs keyboard: Even match.
MW2 With me on controller vs keyboard: I get a + K/D
Quake 3 with me on controller vs keyboard: I wouldnt survive ten seconds.

(DutchGirl) #46

And what if you got a WII,an PC and a Xbox 360…

(Speider) #47

The ultimate combo.
1: Mouse with tre or more buttons and mousewheel, controlled with right hand.
= Perfect aim, lotsa options.
2: 360 controller held with left hand, hooked up to the PC
= Super movement + a couple of more buttons
3: a wii connected to your PC, so when you play, you can see this!:

= Totally immersive, perfectly controlled, cumbersome and expensive but still totally awesome gaming rig :D:D:D

(DutchGirl) #48

Asome that he can do that, that woud be so cool if i had that,3D image and than a shooting game…ow yeah…:D:stroggbanana:

(Speider) #49

I know! i think that is the closest you can get to true 3D without being plugged into the matrix

I am both a PC gamer and a PS3 gamer so I will add a few points of my own.

I love playing fps games on the PC, I have played q3 for years and now play quakelive competitively. The pros are the speed of aiming and the community (being able to type). The community also seems more mature - and is backed up my IRC and forums, and also has steam which I like.

I also love playing fps games on the PS3, infact the newer the game the more I like it on a console it seems. MW2 I originally bought on the PC and I then bought it again for the PS3 and played it on there instead. It was better, I cannot exactly tell why - except it felt more “smooth” and more casual online. By casual I mean you have a little time when you see an opponent because the thumbsticks dont flick instantly to the target like a mouse. Also playing while on a sofa just makes the whole experience more casual for me. The pros of the console are knowing there is a more even playing field, everyone will be using the same graphics settings and most likely will have the same controller. A major con here however is the lack of modding and the community just isnt as good.

In my case I have real life friends who play on the PS3, so when we go out we talk about games we had together etc. Nobody I know though plays on the PC - so my friends there I only talk to on teamspeak which isnt quite the same.

But anyway this is a debate that wont ever be settled. As far as I am concered they both win in certain areas.

Word.

I am a 360 and PC gamer, and also play the PS3 at friend’s places. I Refuse to label by platform. I’m ‘just’ a gamer.

I agree. There’s pros and cons. If you are super wired and competitive then PC is the way to go. And the mod community is amazing. I want to buy a PC to play brink on. Can I afford to build a rig for brink? No so I’ll stick with the xbox I paid 125 for. And XBL network is reliable enough. I’m just hopeful for consistent dlc.

(Speider) #53

agree with Jess Alon.

depending on how the campaign plays, and if the game makes enough money to warrant DLC and so on, it would be interesting with the DLC that could work in this type of game (depending on the story).

One thing i’d like to see down the line (some months from release) is a DLC pack consisting of a few maps that adds to or expands the story. Some games comes with extra MP maps. (Halo). Some games comes with story content + equipment. (Mass Effect 2).

Brink is in the position to give a little of everything.

But first, i just want the complete game to dive in to. I’ll save my dlc talk for later

(LyndonL) #54

On the subject of DLC… we want none of this console specific DLC crap that keeps happening… DLC only available for XBOX etc etc…
It’s rubbish.

(Crytiqal) #55

I wouldn’t care for Xbox only DLC, as long as the PC version also gets some custom maps or something made “official” and distributed to everyone

(jazevec) #56

Unfortunately it’s not so simple. Anyone can download a free third party level or mod, it will usually be done automatically when connecting to a server. But official “DLC” is usually limited, so it will divide the community. Either people can’t connect to a server (new map), or you’ll be shot with weapons you can’t have.

(SockDog) #57

In a sense, dividing the community is the strategy with DLC. Lost count of the times I’ve heard people justify buying DLC not because they want it but because some of their friends have it and they don’t want to be kicked for not having a map.

Peer pressure to play on 360 because most people have a 360 compared to gaming PCs or PS3s. Likewise for DLC. It’s a critical mass of poor decision making of lemming-like proportions.

Exactly how it’s worked with the Halo games and MW2, in fact my friends are pressuring me into getting the Reach map pack cos they all have it, and need to stick to normal maps if I’m in the party… pah!

(Jess Alon) #59

I do think it’s kind of unfair how Xbox has kind of monopolized the market.

(Atavax) #60

i don’t see how its unfair… and it needs to be done by someone. there has to be an “it” gaming device and the xbox is it. I’m sure Sony learned plenty of lessons for their next gen console to try to become more popular… the only thing that i guess is unfair is that the company witht he monopoly on the pc has no incentive to improve it for gaming, in fact they have incentive to make it worse for gaming, so that more people buy the console they have specifically for gaming.
