I want to get one thing clear for everyone: whether there are GUIDS or not, this will NOT affect tracking or tracking sites in any way, they/we don’t use GUIDs/keys

But don’t you compile the servers list from information from the master servers we broadcast to through the set sv_master1/2/3/etc. commands? What if those servers stop working too? By the way, I’d like to congratulate you for [b]your announcement on the TrackBase forums[/b], GREAT post.

I was starting to write a little program to create an etkey file but you beat me to it. I’ll still do it, but nice job!

That’s a PBBan’s ban based on one of their EvenBalance-independent checks running on a streaming server. EB auth servers are not working:

having an easy way to find a new key is good, even better would be away of doing almost automatically would be even better and having away to do it on the local machine would be be better but would then be open to abuse.
Depending on how long PBBans keeps going with ET also makes it less likely that we will need PB GUID’s for much longer any way as we need away for protecting the servers and PB I’m afraid is not the way to go any longer as people can just get a new etkey any time they like which makes banning someone almost impossible.

Tardis, with PB Auth server online the problem to get a new etkey was much easier to solve. You only had to delete the current one and instantly a new one was created.
The only critical point is:
Until the auth server was gone some of the server admin have had set their server to a min. GUID age. This point is invalid now to each new etkey.

Many nice initiatives !

Punkbuster is old but have done the job for many years ! We cannot complain for that. Always money the problem.
But some persons have already complained concerning some strong compatibility issues on new Windows (like some possible crashs). Because we need certainly a new software in the future that use a complete Revision… but at a moment it risk to force to clear all the Shrubbot’s Admins etkeys… for starting on a new one.

For example TZAC is interesting and have some strong basis for doing that in the goal to replace PunkBuster.
But it must propose to let 2choices for the Client User, it must let customer choose depending of the server he want to connect.

• Basic mode like PunkBuster with no email registration
• Security mode with email registration that use TZAC as an Anti-Cheat too.

PB etkey seem to use something like the full ASCII range.
It use 67 bytes but I do not really know exactly what they are for…
Mine is certainly not perfect but use 67 bytes 67^256 possibilities and seem compatible too.
/PB_myguid permit to know the used length it shown it in HEX
Divide it by /2 and you got the bytes length

I have tested some of my etkeys on many servers including on PBBans streamed Servers for some hours before to post.

The PB GuidAuth Master server is online but it is NOT responding to the CdKey registration requests sent and NO etkey files are being generated, at least not for me (XP 64 Pro, 2 different ISP’s). Tested it a lot of times.

Right /pb_cdkeyreg do not work

It is why we all have done the GUID/etkey Generators…

but /pb_myguid work I have use it many time those days…

If you do not have a GUID he say = no guid

If you have and etkey he display the Guid number.

Now, It is surprising that /pb_myguid do not work for you… I cannot explain you why :o

For OSX: ~/Application Support/Wolfenstein ET/etmain
Now we only need a few Youtube videos showing how to move the file, cause on win7 it ain’t that easy I think.

For New Windows Versions you can use that nice utility Everything :

It permit to find easily the etmain Folder, just type etmain in :

for win7 the location is in a hidden folder, and many users will not want to download a tool to find etmain folder.
Better to have a simple guide.

About the etkey file structure, in case it might be helpful to someone, here is what I concluded after comparing the data from a few different etkey files:

1 - A 12-byte header common to all etkeys: 000000100220 in ASCII (0-9 ASCII = 48-57 decimal = $30-$39 hex).
2 - 6 bytes with the date of the file creation in ASCII in the format: YYMMDD (ex.: 111007 for 07 Oct 2011).
3 - 2 bytes with 0’s.
4 - 8 bytes with values between 0 and 9. I’m guessing this might be the time of the file creation but I couldn’t figure out how it was encoded (didn’t give it much thought anyways). If anybody knows about this block’s meaning, please PM’me.
5 - 39 bytes with totally random values.

Total = 67 bytes

Note that the PB GUID is not stored in the etkey file. It will be computed by the PB server that runs along with your game server locally on the server host based on the data in the etkey file.

2. type etmain

3. found in 1 second

Just checked it and PBSETUP isn’t listing ET anymore, so new players won’t be able to connect to updated servers even with etkey files. As I see it, our options are:

1 - Write custom installers for the latest PB version released for ET.
2 - Downgrade all servers to the version of PB that is installed with the 2.60b patch and have existing players do the same.

Or, of course:

3 - Come up with a new solution for player identification completely independent from PB.
