BTW a question to SD:
Do you know if the BF2142 developers of Dice have played ET:QW at E3 or G|C?

(Wils) #8

Not sure about anyone from DICE (I’ve never met any of them) but we had a bunch of EA guys play the game at E3. They were first to play it at the stand, actually - the EA stand was right next to ours, and they came over just after the event opened. I don’t think they were involved in any of the FPS stuff on the stand, though.

We had a couple of EA guys visit the stand at G|C, too, and they seemed to enjoy playing the game. They had Crysis tshirts on, so I guess they were related to that project somehow.

Something that always seemed to be true is that gamers seem to have to take a stand for one particular brand. Many times people strart racking down on other games even without having played them at all. I usually play every game I think might have a chance to get me interested, I form an opinion on it and if I don’t like it I move on. I do not have to defend the games I play, I do not have to rack down on games I do not play and I do understand other people might have another opinion than myself. It’s just too much fanboy’ism going around now days, like “I only play id games” or “SD games” or “DICE games” or whatever. Who cares!? Play what you want to play and move on FFS. Poeple seems to take it personal too, if someone do not like the game someone else play, it’s like an attack against them for playing it and not the game itself. In the end no one cares what anyone else play, just enjoy the game(s) you play.

Sorry for the rant but these kind of threads starts to annoy me tbh.

Edit: btw, superb smiley RosOne!

Thank You Lanz :drink:

(Nail) #12

I rather enjoyed the BF2 demo for a while, but after playing full game recently with all patches, I think they dropped the ball, it could have been a good game

(Joe999) #13

i haven’t heard anyone say that he “only” plays this or that. the common tenor i hear is “i don’t play EA games”, mostly because they are a bugged piece o’ crap, i. e. people get tricked for their money.

lol, i remember back a few months when EA complained that their games don’t sell on the 360. they couldn’t blame piracy, so they blamed M$ because they didn’t sell enough 360s. i wonder when they finally face the truth and start blaming their games.

(Lanz) #14

There’s lots of people who only play Valve games for example or only playing one game and calling everything else crappy without trying them out. Fanboy’ism at it’s best. Anyway the point about all this crap is that everything isn’t as black and white as many people make it out to be, there’s a big shade of gray in there and just because someone like game X doesn’t make game Y any worse, it’s just a matter of opinion. I would just like to see the discussions a bit more balanced, that’s all.

(Svanire) #15

Yes so many fanbois that will defy all rational thought to win themselves to there own arguments.

As for 2142, its sucks. Played the beta for 3 days and meh. Just made me thirst for QW more.

(ouroboro) #16

I’m not a fanboy per se, but I definitely prefer some brands over others. From my experience, id Software games tend to “feel” right. I’ve never been able to get a good, solid feel from a UT-engine game, for example. Valve games aren’t perfect, but they do feel pretty solid compared to many others. I’ve always attributed this to them having started with id Software tech, and probably learning lessons there that, whether intentionally or not, they carried on to Source (the performance of Source is another matter with me, however).

Back when everyone was choosing sides in the Quake vs Unreal war, I was choosing based on feel rather than content. Quake won in my case. I don’t have a lot of experience with EA, but I remember the early MoH games feeling great, while I found BF1942 to be unbearable. I attributed this to MoH being a Q3-engine game, while BF was not.

Tomayto, tomahto. Some people can’t feel a difference from one engine to the next, while some really enjoy certain engines but can’t tolerate others. I’m one of the latter. I’ve never played a Quake-based game that couldn’t be made to feel decent.

(B0rsuk) #17

Oh, not to mention ID Software release their engines under GPL, and are one of few developers to make Linux games ! I hear Epic is very nice to Linux, too, but I’m not a big fan of their games. But I may buy UT2007 if mods are good enough. So I may end up choosing both ET:QW and UT2007, with emphasis on ET:QW.
ID Software engines somehow feel solid, and they’re very efficient, too.

As for EA… I don’t think any more bashing needs to be done.Facts speak for themselves. Just look how they support their games. I’m not talking about BF serries (never played them, even if I heard bad things about them), but much earlier. C&C games. They pretty much started new genre (along with Blizzard), and then just a barrage of clones, essentially. But the worst was the multiplayer balance, lack of patches, etc.

(taken) #18

My fps-community will have a person heading over to DICE.swe to ask some questions soon and my short question reflects my opinions atm: (And I have played the BF2142 beta: :/)

Why unlocks and rank?

From my perspective ulocks make public less fair and rank/stats just boosts statshores and kills teamplay. People play for stats, not for their team or the objective anymore. ATM i only play BF2 mods and BF2 on unranked servers without unlocks. I cant see why you want to continue to use this system.

sad but true. i got bf2 for new and old xbox. the old one crashes the xbox when i try to play online. with the game for the current xbox for over 3 months now i cant connect to ea servers (allthoug all other titels on my xbox360 work perfectly online).

wrote a dozen emails to the support. they couldnt fix the problem (not shure if they even tried).

this is the last game i bougth from ea.

Lanz makes a good point, a lot of people get into a game / band / football team and end up slating everything around it. I think is just part of growing up / teenage nature. I have felt it myself in the past, was a SEGA fanboy when i was a kid, matured into a SONY drone and writing off nintendo etc. But i wasnt a die hard, have always considered myself to be open and prepared to enjoy anything. So I’ve played loads of games, listened to albums and watched other teams play and enjoyed the experiences. But i do recognise people fall in love with something and are loathe to move on, hence Counterstike is still as popular as ever, even tho the Source version has just got nattier graphics.

We are all in some way ET lovers as we hang out here and we will see the ET diehards come out of the woodwork when QW is released, refusing to play it (Errol) just like we say the RTCW fans react when W: ET arrived. I have never owned a BF game because the flag based game play is a little too simple for my liking but my good man chin lent me his 360 for a month and the most played game after table tennis was the BF demo, I had a hell of a lot of fun playing it. Never going to buy it, but was nice to try it out and have a laugh at all the little nods to ET in there. Anyway before this turns into an essay, a lot of the people on here are slating EA/DICE and that’s fine whether you’ve played the game or not. But if you aren’t constructive, I think you should take it to a generic video game forum, ign/gamespot/gamespy and leave the vitriol at their door!
