My understanding of Ranked Root Server is a dedicated host a clan or individual can run and have a QW server be ranked.
No Ranked Root Servers Per ID/Activision - That Sucks!!
well i thought about smthn like that. but a licence needed for ranked server? btw what is the diff? will it be like xp-save? or like ET ranks and upgrades…? i really dont get it cuz iv never played BF
That’s the key, in my mind. Everything I’ve ever heard about BF from server admin types is how much they hate the ranking system. Allowing anyone to run a server with a ranking license would be a great compromise, but I’m not holding my breath.
Thank god… the stat whores… will have… thier own place… to shit on… and be nub.
I HATE games with stats.
A: Kevin: “Right now as far as when the release goes out it would just be our maps, but it is something we are talking about doing but there has not been a decision on it yet. Obviously we want to do what we can do to support the mod community. We just need to figure out exactly how to handle those stats and what impact having a map that has not been added to the database would cause. So right now when the game is released [stats will only be collected on] the officially released maps.”
obviously any custom maps for ranked servers would have to be reviewed otherwise someone could create a map where it’s supar easy to do objectives or there was a secret tunnel to final objective and you could just whore xp points and increase your stats all day
Quote it again please…
There’s still nothing that says forever and ever and ever and ever etc etc
As far as release… i.e. they’re concentrating on release 1st… then who knows.
Being as it isn’t an RPG stats really don’t matter anyways… what matters at the end of the day is who can actually play better.
So right now when the game is released [stats will only be collected on] the officially released maps."
Says to me:
If you’re playing custom maps; stats won’t be collected.
If you’re playing official maps; stats will be collected.
That doesn’t say “no custom maps allowed on ranked servers” to me.
If that’s what Kevin meant to say, the sentence has been written down a bit poorly :o.
But we can only wait until the release until we know for sure I guess
ahh I didn’t see the forever and ever and ever, who’s being silly now[/quote]
My point being they only ever mentioned how it will be on release… then the goon squad jump in and whine away with big ASSumptions.
i wonder if there are any plans for an alternative ranked system much like bf2, i know thats not as popular mainly because the majority of ppl on it seem to be 12  but i dont really care about stats its boring tbh i just like playing tbh, the badges and ribbons are cool cos it gives stuff in game rather than just killing, so hundreds of badges would be more appreciated
Makes sense to me. I’m sure the rewards are balanced versus default maps. Maybe one reward is build 100 objectives…it’s possible a user made map might have 10 buildable objectives and end up skewing the award toward people that play that custom map.
As long as the rewards don’t give you new weapons ala Battlefield 2, then I don’t see people playing only stock maps. Your right though Salteh…we can only wait to see
Going by Kevin’s own comments, this hardly seems like something to panic about. On release, only the unmodified games will collect stats. That doesn’t say that this will always be the case.
The fact is (even assuming the SDK comes out in a usable form on release day), it’s going to take some time for decent custom content to come out anyway.
The obvious solution would be to collect stats everywhere, but give viewers the ability to filter them based on whether they were collected on a server running a mod or custom map.
Not being able to play costum maps on ranked servers is not the problem. Its the fact that, in order to play costum maps, you will have to wait until they are made “official” for use on ranked servers. How long will that take? What are the criteria? Maybe some popular maps wont ever make it to the ranked servers? What about mods? How can you even begin to compare a total conversion to the original game? etc etc
The “collect statas everywhere” solution wont work either becouse it can easely lead to some pretty serious abuse with all sorts of maps and mods. That would completely destroy players faith in the rank system, negateing its purpose entirely.
All in all it seems like a whole lot of trouble just for this one (imo unnecessary) feature
No, that’s an assumption, not a fact. As Kevin said, the only thing that has been pinned down is that stats will not be collected for custom maps at release. Given the stated goal of supporting the modding community, and SDs own history as community mappers and modders, assuming that they will do something harmful to those communities in the long run isn’t particularly reasonable.

If you are going to criticize a suggestion, at least try reading the whole thing. It would be relatively easy to have separate stats pages for servers running stock content and modified content. Most of the third party stats collectors already categorize by mod.
I’m not a big fan of stats, but it seems premature to be making a big fuss about it given how little has actually been finalized.
I will play on the ranked server for only 1 reason, no mods and official maps.
Better competition and practice. Better teamplay, ff on, stopwatch and maxlives = No spam + great teamplay.
- it ensure that even 5 years after the game release we can still find servers and play the original one w/ official maps.
