Night Missions?

(Flesh) #1

Well I’d like to read something about Night Missions. Do you any info on that topic? Firist of all: are they still in the game; or did I miss some article from long ago? If they are then how are they going to affect gameplay? Will there be special maps for night missions or can every map be played during the day and during the night?

I find this to be a interesting and an original new concept so I just had to ask this question since I couldn’t find any similar topics and didn’t read anything about them in the articles of late.

All thats been said is that the maps take place across a variety of times of day.
Some take place at day, some at night, some at dawn, etc.

I haven’t heard anything about the time of day changing over the course of a map.

Something I might think would be cool but won’t be implemented. Imagine if the day maps turned into night maps for a set amount of time like every 5 minutes, the skys turn dark simulating battles over a span of a few days instead of half of a day per map.

(kamikazee) #4

Making it night every 5 minutes would be a little too fast for the eyes…

I think it would be best to keep all maps at a fixed time of the day, performance-wise. (AKA it stays at the time of day it was designed for, be it night or day)

(SniperSteve) #5

What would be cool would be to select times of day in the map rotation screen.

Midday, night, morning, evening, and random would be very cool. It would change the maps feel drastically.

It would be pretty cool if night time would affect gameplay. Maybe you could have decreased line of sight. Or you could be forced to use flashlights or something. Haveing a nasty looking Strogg creep up to you in the middle of a night… scary

If a map was outright designed for nighttime it might work, but most maps balance would probaly collapse if they are played at night while beeing designed for daylight. The attackers would proabbly be able to simply sneak past the defenders if nightime truely means nighttime, and not a World of Warcraft night, where only the skybox is changed, and the visibility stays the same at night as at day

I’m pretty sure I remember something somewhere about the ToD being customizable either during map creation or as a realtime variable. No, I don’t have any sources for that, and like everything else, that’s probably subject to change at this point. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Diecast5) #9

In Totol Control I had the most fun playing with it I can change it to Day time and Night time could not change it to dawn time cause it was for Tribes 2 well any way’s it would be fun to have some thing like that also I would like to tell ya I also put on a fire work’s show on a event I had in tribes 2 long time ago now than was fun to play with , and every one loved it .

Please, no night maps. They are not fun for matches at all. The variable light-strength of different monitors make it extreamly unbalanced.

(Prognar) #11

I still want to write a script that’ll do 24 hours in 3 seconds. TRIPPY SPEED LEVEL!

(Diecast5) #12

It would be cool to have it though but not that fast LOL , it would be cool to have it run like the 24hr time not every 3 sec. LOL

I have an idea for a night map that uses large spotlights to give defenders a chance to spot incoming enemies. An objective for the attackers would be to disable the lighting, giving them not only access to the next objective, but make it easier on them to get to the next objective.

It all depends on how a large dynamic light would work (frame rates, visuals) though. Most spotlight type things in maps are more for show then actually lighting up something.

remember this ain’t WW2, FLIR and light collecting nightvision are readily available, might as well have glow skins

The Strogg use dead human bodies, combined with some alien technology, they might aswell emit zero heat signals and be invisible on any night vision goggles… who knows?

I mean, what sense would a night map make, if it basically played like a day map, just with darker textures? I think for the sake of gameplay we could assume that the Strogg and GDF are able to block their own radiation (its the future, silly  ), making night fighting a purely visual contest again

Yes, apart from the fact that nightvision doesn’t pick up heat signals…that’s IR-goggles.

There are 2 types of “Night-Vision” goggles, Passive and Active.

(Zarkow) #18

Please point out where it says that the night vision goggles pick up heat signals.

He said that zero heat signal would make them invisible to night vision [goggles] and that just isn’t so. These are two different type of technology.

(Night vision shows the classic green/black-shaded image = not the same thing.)

Thank you for the correction, but I rather have an impression of “who cares?”. :?

Night maps sounds nice idea first. But in practise it might not be nice to actually play night maps.

In BF2 Special Forces there are 3 night maps but most servers dont have them in rotation because people dont like to play them. For me it was fun first to try out them and night vision toys. But in the end i dont like to play night maps. They were not fun.
