Still no word on a release date in any of them 3 write ups…

Although on the eurogamer on it says later in 2006…that blows Gringos hopes out the window! :tapir:

now that one sounds interesting:

Instead of painting textures onto polygons, designers specify what certain areas should be by proxy, so environmentally you can order the map to display weathered grey rock or churned mud near a river, moss below a certain height, and so on.

i wonder what the editor for this looks like and how height information is specified. sounds somehow like you can paint a landscape in 2d and the program does the rest of you. but maybe that’s just wish-thinking as i hope the editor will be far easier and less time consuming than radiant itself in it’s current version

Hmm, height could be specified by the alpha channel.

With any preview or interview that game looks beter and better.
Haven’t read the two links Wils has posted so far.
Only the link in the first post.

well, one article says “it’s set to debut before the end of the year although we’ve nothing more concrete than that right now”

i hope this doesn’t mean “by the end of the year” …

@Wils

Any chance those screenshots would be available in higher resolution than 1024x768? Maybe at http://www.splashdamage.com/screenshots/high-res/ or something like that

(kamikazee) #14

Hmmm… Levels of about 32 square kilometres… The furthest I’ve gone on ET is 2 square kilometres. And that’s huge, for 1 level. (Allso a reason why I smalled it down.)

Ranger class…all I wanted to know.

and another questions answered to full satisfaction:

Shadows and dynamic lighting play a big part in whether you can see stuff. We have a HDR-like solution called Bloom which is much cheaper and that gives us the really bright skies, lets us do sunsets and stuff.

awesome. the article on www.computerandvideogames.com is filled with a lot of new info

still wondering about the part with the megatexture technology. sounds like there will be a new editor in addition to radiant.

We took this basic implementation of the technology and then started developing it further so we had it working on a 3D mesh, we introduced a single parallel light source for lighting, the ability to put other models and things on the landscape, foliage, tools like mega-gen which generates the texture, geometric texture distribution, the road tool that lets you just plop roads down along a route.

For Quake Wars, we started from the beginning wanting to produce a toolset that level designer and mod makers in the community would find really easy to use.

Makes me think of Bryce, it had such terrain skinning functions…

All of those reviews look great. Looks like it will be a ‘unique’ game insted of: same old same old, rush it out the door with a ton of bugs, bad engine, and basicly the same gamplay as current games.

Looking good, now I think its time to release a closed beta for all that balancing that needs to be done.

(Joe999) #19

muahahahahahaha. this sounds like fun:

The EDF engineer will be able to use a repair tool to tear apart hostile vehicles and repair friendly ones. This role will be considerably more important than in other vehicle-based games, thanks to the highly realistic way the game will model rigid-body physics for vehicles. That is, instead of dealing a generic amount of “damage” to a vehicle, enemy soldiers can tear the front wheel off of a vehicle, realistically crippling its movement (rather than simply dealing a certain amount of damage until the whole thing blows up). Considering the power and utility of vehicles in the game, engineer players will probably be highly sought after…

i do hope that SD considers at least 2 weeks timeframe between gold status and game release because i need to schedule buying a computer, having it ready at game launch and using the game in an awesome 4 week vacation

Ok, then I’ll scale it up by myself…

:moo:
