nazi symbols in computer games

(Joe999) #1

i was thinking about rtcw2 and have come to the conclusion that the game won’t be available on xbox360 in germany. reason: it will be forbidden because of the nazi symbols the wolf games contain, or at least it won’t get a rating. and as i’ve learned, M$ refuses to release xbox360 games in a country which don’t get a rating there.

either way, here’s my question: do you guys really need nazi symbols in the games? imo it would be fine as well if one sticks to the terms and symbols which are contained in ET.

what do you think?

ps @ Etnis: ok, here’s the “one” again. how should i have written that differently?

You could of said…

The Swastika icon is illegal in Germany.

(Cerebrate) #3

Swastikas are replaced in games with other symbols in Germany, I think (with the McDonalds logo).

(Joe999) #4

yeah, replaced with whatever logo and blood is green and in Q4 they cut out the stroggification part making the whole game useless. sad, but the main question remains: do you guys outside germany need reality symbols in computer games?

Trivializing anything will always cause problems…

oops, I think I just trivialized that…I’m outta here …::::Swoosh>>>>

I could quite happily live without the swastika in a WW2 game - I don’t think you need it to convey the theme or atmosphere except in rare cases (a mission where you had to infiltrate Hitlers toilet, for example - you’d obviously expect swastika toilet paper then), although it obviously does make the job ‘easier’.

On the other hand, I tend to play games which involve skiing with a jetpack, or bouncing around and turning 90 degrees in mid-air over a random walkway suspended 40 feet above a pit of lava while firing nails at someone, so I suspect there may be people who care more about immersion than I do

I think your probalem is with the german goverment! madness they let the auto-ban (or how ever its spelt) have no speed limits… but they dont let nazi symbols in a game kinda funny to me, its not like if they dont let the symbols in everyones gonna forget about the war -.- anyway gl.

*Edit- Joe you could of said “You” “one” means in that sentance you personally and not everyone else. Correct me if im wrong nail.

There was a reason to ban these symbols. And afaik you allowed to use these symbols for educational use etc., e.g. in books or movies about this time (“Schindlers List”).

I’m going to pretend that ignorance can be cured

It’s quite self-explanatory I think.

There are still groups in Germany that don’t realize the madness of WW2 and try to carry on a spirit for which millions of peoples have been assassinated (sorry for my English at this point). IMO there can’t be enough effort to supress this.

Nobody denies earlier or other uses of swastikas (and they are allowed to be shown in these contexts - I remember a Kung-Fu movie with Jackie Chan). But in Germany the swastika is asoociated with Nazi Germany. And nowadays the swastika is mainly used to show the affiliation with Nazi ideals (at least in the western world). While these ideals may be allowed in other countries, in Germany they are not (for obvious reasons).

Some games just need Nazi symbols, some don’t. IMO.

I think no game “needs” nazi symbols, but it can make a game more realistic or brutal.
But those symbols are not only used by the nazi’s as you can read above.
It’s just the thought behind the symbol that people think it is off-limits.
In Germany (and my country Holland) you can still be arrested for doing the hitler solute or making nazi propaganda.

I personally think if people want to do it again they won’t pick the same symbols because of their negative past.
So I think we should leave the past for what it is and grow up, symbols don’t kill people, people kill people.

Unless I’m mistaken there was a German edition of RtCW without any nazi symbols, so I assume that will be the case again if necessary.

I just hope they make it so that it’s possible to play MP on the same servers regardless of which edition you have, unlike Q4 where you can’t play on German servers if you have the English edition (and vice versa). :banghead:

(Pytox) #16

Its for the most countries I think.

(kamikazee) #17

These symbols are not all the same: they can be seen left-facing or rightfacing, and sometimes 2 differnt meanings are given to those faces, one is death (evil)l and one is life (good).

The two forms got cluttered up eventually, and now it’s all called swastikis.

Edit- Joe you could of said “You” “one” means in that sentance you personally and not everyone else. Correct me if im wrong nail.

one pron : a person in general (~ never knows)
: ____ used in place of a first person pronoun

no doubt this dog has been playing too much on custom maps with swastikers!

(DarkangelUK) #20

Why do they have to use the Swastika symbol in a game set during the war? I think they do it solely to offend people, and has nothing to do with historical accuracy what so ever :moo:
