nazi symbols in computer games

(Zenix) #21

It makes sense to have them. The Nazi party was obvioulsy a large part of the war, it would be historically inaccurate not to feature them.

I don’t think anyones setting out to deliberately offend people with there inclusion.

well it isn’t only the nazi symbols. some time ago there was a game out where you fight iraqis afaik, don’t know it’s name, just heard that it exists.

well, speaking of symbols, honestly i wouldn’t want to play with or against an american flag either. i for my part could play as well with fictive flags and symbols. i don’t see a point in using stuff from reality. it only shows that game designers lack from ideas. i mean, take stalker. why do they want to rebuild chernobyl? where’s the point in that? nobody knows how it’s there, so who cares how it looks like there? they only waste money with that.

Well what about football games, say Fifa and ISS, one used real names one didnt, its just feels alot better to be using real names/flags sooner than fake made up flags, nothing to do with the game designers been able to think of something to replace real ones.

I think those symbols should be in the games even in germany. It is a historical symbol and for the historical aspect as well as the immersion and realisticness they should be in those types of games.

They surely use it partially 'cause Swastika was used by Nazis. German leaders were Nazis and Germany started the war. No historical accuracy?

I hate the usage of the American flag in World War II games. It’s even in ET! It says “Allies win” if the Allies win. But still it show the American flag. The American’s didn’t win the war alone even though the did a big part. And I’m not a big friend of the USA nowadays. Iraq and all.

Nice what-if scenario.

The swastika has been in use a long time before the nazi party decided to use it. To quote “Der Mensch Und Seine Zeinchen” (“The Signs and the Symbols”?), by Adrian Frutiger (translated): “The name Swastika comes from sanscrit and means ‘to be feeling well’. In China, it was the symbolf ‘maximum perfection’. In Japan, it was called Manji* and designated not only the numerical group 10.000 but also the concept of ‘infinity’.”

  • Everybody who have read the manga “Blade of the Immortal” will also recognize this; the main character (Manji) uses the swastika on his back.

Some older cultures also used it as the symbol for the sun, sometimes with a more circular aspect to it.

In China, there was also the clockwise and the counter-clockwise meaning bad luck and good luck, respectivelly… nowadays, this idea is probably reinforced by the nazi use, of course (the nazi symbol is clockwise, and rotated 45 degrees).

In the end, it’s a very generic symbol, like the cross. The cross has been around for a long time in a lot of different forms before the catholic church decided to use it. The swastika has pretty much a similar story, but due to all the crap associated with it, people try to stay away from that.

When we played with some german clans on RTCW we asked them about it, and they told us the german version had different art assets; a generic cross symbol replaced the swastika on the sp game. And on the MP game, IIRC, that’s the symbol that’s used on all versions; there’s no swastika on the multiplayer.

(kamikazee) #27

IIRC it was the Wolfenstein eagle.

Oh yeah, duh.

Insane how you can forget something you’ve seen a billion times.

(kat) #29

That just means they removed the ‘Nazi pack’ at localization for Germany et-al. It just makes use of the ‘indexing’ files go thru when the game starts; depending on the PAK name you can overwrite the content of another file which is all that happens for the full version.

I’m guessing my sarcasm didn’t quite shine through in my comment as much as i had hoped… even with the little moo at th end…

(zeh) #31

@kat: obviously.

(kat) #32

Not so obvious to some, given the general comments so far! :stuck_out_tongue:

A sleeping cow—the international symbol for sarcasm.
