My complaints about none bots in Quake Wars!

(RosOne) #41

Isn’t there some community guy at SD? Someone who’d reply and say something like:

"Sorry, there will be no bots in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Our primary goal is to create complex, innovative and flexible human-players-only multiplayer game and we don’t feel comfortable with wasting our time on implementing bot support. Release date is xx.xx.2006. RosOne will get the beta today.

Thread closed."

Or something like that :drink:

(baff) #42

@ joe thank god granps It’s not like you really had anything to add

@ borsuk

And now, in ET:QW, stuff like deployables makes it even harder to make proper bots. Oh, and BIG maps. Too many factors.

Big maps is a lot of pathing, can’t see deployables functions as being a massive endeavour. RTS AI drop deployables all the time. Not really groundbreaking.

I don’t think bots is something they can suddenly rush implement if they haven’t done it already.
Not sure about finalising the game before you add bots, in Unreal for example the pathing tracks for the bots must be built into the maps when you design the level in Unrealed.

As far as I’m concerned without the bot option, multiplayer will never be great, but instead could still peak at very good.

I wish there were. It’s about time really, and how about an official FAQ for QW?. That would stop a few “silly” questions. Just politely point the poster to the FAQ, lock topic.
Even if the info for a certain question isn’t/can’t be made availible, then possibly put a reason and/or date when it may be likely to be answerable?.

O.k., we may be fed up with all the questions about bots for the upteenth time for example, but not everyone who visits these forums is as knowledgeable as some of us about QW/programming/forums/delete as applicable. It’ll be nice to point them in the right direction :drink:

I’m also fed up with either silly answers to serious questions from SD themselves, or the “done when it’s done” and nothing else attitude.
It doesn’t really endear people to care anymore at times. It’s something that should be addressed, because quite frankly, it’s becoming boring zzZZZzZZZZzzz :expressionless:

(Nissen2k) #44

Guys, if bots didnt count, eveyone would agree and we would not have this agrue!

(Sauron|EFG) #45

I heard the game will include 11 tapirs trained in the fine art of fragging. Maybe not as good as bots (you’ll need 12 computers), but still!

:tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir:

(Dazzamac) #46

Ahh I was wondering when the tapir would jump onto the scene. If all else fails, bring out the tapir.

Bot game so the noob community is increased. I see how people like it. Personally the idea of bots in a game is a stupid idea. Why would you want to play against something that doesnt adjust to what your doing, that runs the same few paths over and over, and most importantly doesnt interact with you. Bots in my honest opinion are for noobs. I mean its not hard in Enemy Territory to keep arty on the same spot for minutes on end and rack up a megaload of kills and then do it again the next map. The whole bot idea is rather pointless. They provide no challenge and as I stated before increaes the noob community by making it so they actually dont need skill to play the game. I hate bots and most importantly I am tired of people whining about the game not doing this or having that. Be happy with what they give you like many other people may possibly be. If you want bots in a game go make a mod or heres a big idea go learn how to develope a game and hey make one of your own. But people have thier own opinion of what they like.

(ParanoiD) #48

ARGHHH!!! Had to read it all :o. 2 PPL pissing me off about no bots on ET, cuz im so late on reading some things first, then my official reply with tapir force closing :o

------Part 1 - Replying to stuff-------

First as somewhere is said that SD is asking for some1 with experience on AI, it doesnt mean its needed for bots! AI is more then that, as mentioned in an article, clicking on a teammate would be enough to call for an medic to help him, thats AI as well.

ET was free, but it PWNZ, no nice gfx, not much options, only 6 standard maps. But SD tought on one thing: Gameplay wich is still nr.1 for me to buy a game. Then, the great community is so much better then killing some bots

If your not good enough to kill real skilled ppl, connect to noobservers, there is always a place where u can be with ur own less experienced skillers, no point, real ppl are more realistic as well.

And yes for some (also for me) ET:QW would even be a thing to pay SD for the good time i have with ET. But if ET wouldn’t be free, i would have bought it too.

End of part 1.

----------Part 2 - PWNING Back :)------------

So now you DONT NEED TO BUY ET:QW. If you NEED bots then BUY ANOTHER GAME which you like. SD doesn’t care and our community doesnt like whiners like you as well over here, neither does the tapir! Just buy BF2, UT2007, CS:S or whatever X game from Y publisher! You dont need ET:QW. But dont start crying when u spent ur money on one of those games and have no money left, when u realize the gameplay suxx, doesnt over the other things you want, is full of bugs, when u get pwned, no balance etc. and that all because they had the release date to keep of ??/??/??? Then u play at ur neighbour who has ET:QW cuz he believed in its gameplay. You see the nice graphics, the pure balance, the nice community, a good server, much fun on the servers with real ppl, balance in the game, great teamwork which do all compensate the lack of bots which werent needed after all as you imagine. Then again don’t cry! You have to decide what you want, trust me SD knows what they do. They release the game at onle one release date, and that date is “When it is done”. No fast job to get it ready before that date, just a perfect game, with less bugs, no big problems, good balance etc. You can choose what you want, its your money, you dont need to. But what i find with these ppl is that they really like ET:QW from what they saw so they want it, but never played ET (I guess) so don’t know what real SD work is, how it is to be in this community, the reason why there are no bots needed.

To nissen2k (or whatever his name was), i cant really respond to him as hes just “ET:QW needs bots” with out arguments WHY. Then for baff as i read out of his topics he is a little noob. He doesnt want to wait to unlock weapons, he just wants to play the game with all guns etc. He wants easy bots because he is to weak to handle real ppl. I guess he really wants a game with cheats, loads of hacks and savegames which are completed to get everything because he cant archieve it himself. (Data retrieved out of his posts on this forum in several topics). My recommendation: ET:QW is not the game for you! It has neither of it above (maybe all guns, but you need to choose class/weapon so u cant use every weapon for every class, u need to choose). So get UT. Start a bot game on easiest. Use all cheats for godmode etc and have a nice day.

Ok thats en of part 2.

-----------Part 3 - :tapir: -------------------

Now i will make sure that this army of tapirs will punish everyone who needs to say that ET:QW is not good cuz it has no bots as it isnt needed, if you want them, just buy another game, but again dont cry. Tapir Splash Damage Protection Guards
:tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir: :tapir:

(Lanz) #49

The RTS view of it is quiet good actually, the question is, have you ever seen a good RTS AI ever? Tbh I haven’t, I’ve never seen any taking me by surprise in any way shape or form and they are usually very limited in their abillities to perform even the most basic tasks.

Making bots, as in bot walking around shooting at the first enemy they see and doing uncomplicated game types like capture the flag is doable, yes, but even in those kind of games they don’t act smarter than a can of beans. To this add complicated objectives where the bot have perhaps 10-15 things to chose from where those 10-15 things are more or less important at any given time and you’re set up with a big task ahead of you. If you then add in the game balance which fundementally alters the task in many situations, ex is it smart for a bot to attack as an enginer against a tank class? When implementing the bots it might be, when the game has been balanced it might not and you see why it’s important to have the game almost finalized before implementing the bots. Ok that was a pretty bad example but perhaps you understand my point anyway.

AI is a big field, it’s not easy and you will probably need at least one coder with a massive experince on the team for it to be doable, and then add in at least 1 or 2 coders more working on it full time. Still that doesn’t guarantee they succeed in making good bots for a game like this. Personally I would rather see them spending those resources on making the game as good as it can be for online play.

(DarkangelUK) #50

Do you really think the idea to not include bots was decided at the coffee machine?

Locki: Think we should add bots?
RR2DO2: Nah
Locki: ok

I’m pretty damn sure they weighed up the pros and cons, and the decision to not include them was in the best interest of the game itself. No they didn’t leave them out to personally annoy you, no they don’t have so much money that they want to lose sales because of it. Hell for all we know they may still be weighing up the pros and cons… for all we know there may be bots. Wait and see. Regardless of the decision, i still see the game doing really well… even if the 3% of gamers who crave bots don’t buy it.

(Nissen2k) #51

The idea to not include bots? They probably said this to themself: The biggest community is the online community with no idea about on how large the off-line community really is, and how much people enjoy bots.

(kamikazee) #52

I think we shouldn’t speak too much in their name, ya know.

(Dazzamac) #53

Nissen, Baff. You forget one thing. Splash damage started out as modders, gamers like the rest of us, not some git in a boardroom. Due to this I am confident a great game will be released, bot or no bot.

(Gringo) #54

Paranoid, u said it all perfectly mate! Thats what i wanted to say but i couldnt type as the nonsense talk about bots near made my brain shut down.

This point is the most important. If u want a game with bots buy another game! QW aint just about tryin to cater to all wishes and make as much money as possible. I suspect the goal is to produce a really top class innovative game. Of course money comes into the equation but somethings in life r more important than money.

For example, I’d rather have an army of tapirs ready to do my bidding and help me in my quest of world domination rather than get loads o money!

(SniperSteve) #55

ET:QW will be innovation not imitation.

Need I say more?

And why play with a bot when you can play with people. If you don’t have a network connection at the time, play something else.

There most deffinitly will be 3rd party mods for adding bots, if you need bots so bad, then it simple, just don’t buy the game 'till some modder releases a bot mod.

(KAGE) #56

you want a game with bots so much; make your pwn GD game…
all the ai and sh!t is just disk space… there is only so much you can fit on a dvd/cd’s no AI bots just means there are room for for more maps, more sound files etc.

(kamikazee) #57

AI code shouldn’t be that big, it’s just complex to make and thus takes a load of time.

(RoXxOrS) #58

i agree with Nissen what if people want to practise without thedeal of potentially letting down their team
bots allow u to practise and have fun without being online and et:qw could be the best multiplayer and single player game
and the point about re hashing the same ideas in single player does not make a game bad
do you not think that by having a single player mode and an award winning multiplayer mode wont attract more people than just an award winning multiplayer mode
it is only going to be an advantage for the game to have sp look at bf2 incredibly popular at the moment and even tho it is a multiplayer game people still by it for the single player even tho the bots are brain dead

(fattakin) #59

The tutorial mode will have bots, someone will mod them up in the future to work on all maps.
But they wont be as good as youd want.

Baff i get your point as its good fun to play against bots as a change at LAN parties. we do it with ET.

You should checkout Swat4 , 2 teams of 4 against the Computer terrorists. Its fun.

(nUllSkillZ) #60

I think the more is in the package the better.
Not because I want to play SP.

I think of mods that only can be build with bots.
Like an Invasion Mod (where the team of players are defending a base against an invasion of bots) or some kind of BiA mod (giving orders to your bot team).
