mortars

(=TR=Harpo) #1

I generally hate the mortar. I get Tk’ed by that more that any other weapon. morons use it and when they get one kill they cheer and type stupid little messeges. Once i had a guy TK me 7 times w/ a mortar on goldrush, and at the end he was like" awesome, i killed 3 guys w/ the mortar!!!" Dont get me wrong, if i get a guy thats good w/ a mortar on my team, i love it, but please, if you dont know how, dont use the damn thing!!!

(Brinkman) #2

i disagree… mortars rule and can turn the tide of a battle easly

for example… on oasis… i was on the axis team and we were getting punded by assaults from each direction… (my teammates weren’t really good) so i setup a mortar and fired it at the allies spawn… close to the broken wall… killed about 15 allies before my team finally starting owning the allies… we then wont the map

(=TR=Harpo) #3

look what i said… I said that if they guy is good w/ the mortar i dont mind, but dont use the mortar if you dont know how.

(damocles) #4

And you think some guys are just naturally good at using the mortar? It takes practice. It’s a weard weapons to use and not everyone picks it up straight away. Givce the poor sods a chance and let them practice with it.

(MadAxeMan) #5

Totally agree Brinkman, Oasis is a great map for the mortar. Just outta spawn from Axis, mortar the old city wall area and watch them drop.

(Azarael) #6

I wish for the allies sake the mortar wasn’t allowed on Oasis.

(Agrado) #7

I think mortars suck in general… what’s the point? Why not just make players randomly drop dead once every 3 minutes, it would have exactly the same effect.

Mortar spawnkilling especially sucks, just the same as any other type of spawnkilling.

(Riftgarde) #8

I was on an incline once the first day playing ET and aimed the mortar too high and dropped a mortar on myself.

(amazinglarry) #9

If you’re on an incline, I think it would be cool if something on the aiming system let you know what kind of degree the incline was, so you could ajust better. I’ve had that happen to me before too. :frowning:

It’s funny as hell tho.

(weasel) #10

It does adjust. Fire at 90° anywhere, incline or not, and it will come back down on your head. One cool thing you can do is if you’re on an incline facing up, you can fire the mortar behind you. And if you’re on a steep enough incline facing down, you can fire it at 0°. You can actually use it as a close range weapon if you do it like that.

(Brinkman) #11

i think everyone has done that at least once :o

(SubstandardJones) #12

Mortar? More like Moretokillallthepeopleintheworld!

No…no wait. Mortar is better.

Anyway, the Mortar rules. As a mortar/engineer team, my friend Premium and I were able to steal the tank on Gold Rush by ourselves. I rained firey death upon the axis with the mortar, and he kept an eye out for when the coast was clear, repaired the tank, and stole it before they could come back.

A good mortar player can kick a lot of butt. I’ve gotten upwards of 25 mortar kills on Rail Gun from mortaring the tug, and I’ve gotten to the point where I can sometimes “feel” where I need to fire in order to hit a specific area of the map.

Yeah, teamkills still happen sometimes, but that’s inevitable when it takes five seconds for the shell to land in the first place. Sometimes you’ll just get unlucky. But the few teamkills a good mortar will get are more than made up by the mass numbers he takes out.

The mortar may be my new favorite weapon.

(=TR=Harpo) #13

i realize it takes time to get good, so fire up your own server and practice hitting bushes and buildings, instead of your teammates

(MadAxeMan) #14

You need to get a feel for where the enemy routes are. Don’t play mortar untill you know the maps really well.

I agree about spawn killing, and I try for the old city wall and ammo and health resupply on Oasis. Inevitably I’m gonna hit a few guys who just spawned.

I can’t say that spawn killing bothers me that much in general in ET. You can get out two ways on Oasis, if you’re too dumb to realise your being mortared out one exit then natural selection will prevail.

It’s no different to the bank courtyard and Allied lobbing airstrikes off the bridge. I think it’s a valid tactic. There is another exit.

(ETplayer) #15

i use mortar alot, people usually get pissed of and call me a “mortar slut”,

One thing thats IS very important for a mortar soldier is a covert ops, a covert ops will make the enemy’s appear on ur commandmap wich gives me a precise aim, (thus an advantage).

I killed like 50 people on oasis(axis) in 1 match with mortar :stuck_out_tongue: and even more on the beach map(axis and allied)

Mortar rule if u know how 2 use it :drink:

(Cyber-Knight) #16

yeah those noob mortar players should stick with FF off servers until they get better at it.

mortars do suck i fyou’re in a small game. but once the game starts to become like 10vs10+ that’s when you begin to notice the power of the mortar exponentially as the server gets larger.

yeah i hate that Old City spawn. they should make that freaking spawn larger, or make the door larger so the Allies can get out more quickly. I mean the spawn shield is useless against the mortar cuz it takes forver to get through that tiny door.

(swoop) #17

Well, mortars on oasis are just as good for allies. From the very beginning of the map, if I’m ally with mortar, I run up that little ramp and park at the top, setup and I can hit the old city building, the wall for all those engies planting mines and pretty much any other part of the axis side of the map.

When we take the old city, I setup near the old city flag and I can hit just about anywhere I please on the axis side. One time on Oasis when I was mortar, I capped like 20 people with mebbe 2 tks (I wish there was a way to warn the people…nothing like firing a mortar and knowing where it will land just to see all those blue dots run right at the target :banghead: )

(FstFngrz) #18

One of my favorite weapons ( hey but so is the knife  )

I do say it does get boring sometimes, ya just sit and watch your name scroll. I do have to say in the last couple weeks the opposing teams have been much better at making it a point of “taking out the opposing mortars”

like in this 30 min railgun game
they got me at last 20 seconds  (one must of jumped out the window in axis railgun :stuck_out_tongue: )

AND once again THANKS FOR THE AMMO

(Flash95) #19

if you can get a forward player to work with you the morar is a killer weapon. we used it to clear out the axis from the tank on gold rush in under two minutes we had it repaired and on the road to the bank

(|Robot|Bender) #20

I’m a big fan of the mortar and have been trying to get better and better. Unfortunatly, some people don’t recognize Mortar fire when they see it and think its an temp airstrike or something.

And then they run right into your strike and its your fault :disgust:

One question tho:

When someone calls in an airstrike or art strike on the map there is a yellow crosshairs. Now that also shows up on your reticle, but i am having a hard time figuring out where/how to line that up correctly to hit the targeted area…

Anyone?
