They are very rare, why?
I think that max lives bring something fun and challenging to the game, because now you can actually wear the enemy down by killing them very often.

It sucks on pubs, people play like they’re going to die in real life if they run out of lives. I do enjoy a max lives game every once in a while, but most of the time I prefer having infinite lives.
even if the max lives are at a thousand, i STILL wouldn’t play. reason: not because of max lives itself, but the fact that it’s very hard to tap out… you’ve got to tap out, then hit enter, or click yes… that’s annoying as hell, and i ALWAYS miss the spawn on max lives servers.
if there was an option to NEVER ask me again, i wouldn’t mind a bit playing on max lives servers… i like playing where people are consciencly worrying about their life instead of just playing rambo.
i would like to point out that on max lives servers, the axis normally have the advantage, becuase those mounted machine guns are mean… and at a place such as seawall battery, the mission is as close to impossible as it gets. (because normally to kill one of those guys, i would have to run a suicide mission or 2, which i thuroughly enjoy doing, hehe). oh, and i’ve found that it becomes a game of who can kill the other team fastest normally; instead of worrying about the objectives
on one last note, also if max lives are too low, this provokes players (especially newbs who play gourilla warfare style) to camp away… campers are no fun, and makkes the game very boring
I wont get into a big argument about limited vs unlimited lives servers, but JAHU, I run 10 limited lives servers. I prefer them 10 times more than the 4 unlimited lives ones I also have.
Oh, but there is. Bind your jump key to “+moveup;forcetapout”. No more tapout warnings.
Posted by ND80 on planetwolfenstein:
/bind SPACE “+moveup;forcetapout”
will bind the space to jump and tap out, completely removes the popup message.
Added: Damn I’m slow. :moo:
Actually, if you play on ND80’s servers, you don’t need to use the forcetapout thing. They have now taken the message away for everyone =)
This is true, as Im one of the beta testers for the Shrub mod for ET and he has eliminated this most annoying of pop up boxes.
I prefer either 1 life, or unlimited lives.
I think ET maps are poorly suited to limited lives, because of the long match times. If you happen to life out early (which is going to happen sometimes) who wants to sit around for 10 minutes spectating ?
If the number of lives is equal for each team, it is extremely biased against the attackers on most maps.
Just my $0.02, everyone should play on servers set up just the way they like.
I prefer infinite lives myself because I think it keeps people focused on accomplishing the goals neccesary to win…
Max lives is more of a deathmatch as far as I’ve seen.
I think max lives could help your individual skills more than infinite perhaps, but I like completely the objectives in the game.
Both have their ups and downs though, it’s all about preference.

bind SPACE “+moveup;forcetapout”
(replace SPACE with whatever you use for jumping)
Personally, I like max lives with long respawn (limbo) times. Simply put, It rewards teamplay and annoys rambos.
i agree , i dont like max lives either, also axis just normally die less cause defending is usually easier. Speciialy on battery.
Gaming is an investment of time, like any other activity. And someone’s gotta lose. But you wanna see a noob delete ET before giving himself a chance to learn the ropes? Stick him on limited lives.
While you don’t have to be that good to enjoy a limited lives server, you do have to be evenly matched with the others present. 4-5 guys that have played Q3/ET for hundreds of hours and with each other for tens of hours, using teamspeak, and on the same team? Extremely deadly and shouldn’t be allowed to play on public servers in any configuration… but limited lives?! For some reason all limited lives servers are clan affiliated. Go figure.
Maybe one day the gaming world will meet a brillant programmer that finally figures a perfect way to keep the adults out of the kiddie pool and prevent kiddies from drowning in the deep end of the big pool, but until then things like public pick-up limited lives servers will be rare and sit empty a lot.
1 Life would be good with 3000 players in each team. Then we would have a decen beach game. (in a bigger map, of course :D)
But then if you found a TKer, castration would be the least to be done.
Wow, are you wrong on so many fronts.
Of the 14 ET servers I run, 10 are limited lives and all are ‘public’ servers. We certainly arent a clan. My servers are packed most of the time (mostly at nights when the ‘adults’ are home), including the limited lives . While some ‘noobs’ should learn the game on ULTL servers, many new players to ET come to my limited lives servers and prefer them and learn the game just fine. This is why I hate getting into these limited vs unlimited lives discussions, because someone always makes general statements that are completley off the wall.
nd80… i’ve played on your 3 strike server (3 lives), and it was nothing but a pure deathmatch. the axis team dominated because of their mounted machine guns, and over all i didn’t have much fun at all =\
That server is new and we are working on some tweaks to make it more enjoyable… Having said that, when I have played on it, I didnt see the mounted machine guns as a problem. Rifle grenades on the other hand are more of an issue-one that is being addressed before long.
it’s really only a huge problem with seawall battery… there are 2 mg’s that if you man them, there isn’t much the other team can do
The other thing that gets me about limited lives in ET is how easy it is to gib. If one of our modders changes that to be more like how it was in RTCW, I would be much more inclined to play limited life.
I wouldn’t mind max lives servers if there was a way to replenish your lives. Say you only get 5 lives, and once you run out you have to wait two spawn rotations to get your 5 lives back. Reckless players are still penalized for burning through their lives so quickly, but no one has to sit out the entire map if they get screwed early on.
This would allow an attacking team to widdle out over-aggressive defenders then take advantage of them while some are out of the game getting their lives back. And if the attackers run out of lives the defenders get some extra time to put up defenses or push the remaining attackers farther back.
The maxlivesrespawnpenality command gives people a bonus life when they run out, but you only get back that one life and once you die you take the penality again.
