Max lives, why not?

(Majin) #21

On ND80 servers you get 15 lifes for a 30 minute game.
Can you not stay alive for an average of 2 minutes? Thats if there aren’t any medics, which there always are.

(ND80) #22

Already done, shrub has doubled the amount of damage needed to gib and this is in effect on my servers.

(Majin) #23

No wonder I was having to shoot the bodies so much today

(Dingo19) #24

Well then it wouldn’t be a max life server would it? :banghead:

If you can’t do this, may I suggest Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube. UL servers are a pointless exercise. There is no strategy, planning or teamwork.

The moment I see strategy, planning, or teamwork on any pub server, max lives or not, I’d be more than happy to see max lives the norm. =)

That server is new and we are working on some tweaks to make it more enjoyable… Having said that, when I have played on it, I didnt see the mounted machine guns as a problem. Rifle grenades on the other hand are more of an issue-one that is being addressed before long.[/quote]

I enjoy how you created a problem and are now going to change the game again to fix the problem. This will invariably change the game fundamentally and create a new problem. But you pay for them I presume so rock on.

I stopped playing on your servers because the Are You Sure? pop-up was removed. That pop-up served a purpose. But enjoy your servers and keep modding them, you and Shrub will have W:ET playing exactly like RtCW (sans XP, campaign modes, et al.) in no time.

Somebody needs to come on over to ND80 servers :moo:

(TsN|WaCKSteVeN|GLB) #28

max lives on pub servers is a bad idea. without the real communication aspect of a clan, everyone needs to be medic for this to logistically work if u are on defense. max lives makes defending imbalanced, imho.

(ND80) #29

Yes I pay for them, so thanks for the permission to run them as I see fit. And what problem did I create? I started another server to run for players at my own expense and set it up to give players another ET setting? That’s a problem?

You stopped playing on a max lives server because we disabled the pop up messages? Wow, that’s surprising as that was the single biggest complained about feature of the max lives setting. And thank you, I do enjoy my servers as do many many other people. To suggest that the Shrub mod somehow turns ET back into RTCW is absurd. Features that this mod allows like XP savers, etc, etc, further enhance the game, not detract from it. If you dont like the mod, dont play on the servers. BTW, what was the point of your post anyways? All you did was criticize and not offer anything constructive. Wake up on the wrong side of the bed before you posted?

Increasing personal respawn time every time you spawn would be a nice “middle ground” on the “limited lives” issue. Make it so that after a certain number of respawns you have to sit one cycle out or something.

On a side note, tweaking respawn times seems like it would be a great way to balance maps also. If a map’s too easily defensible you could increase the respawn periods for the d or increase it for the o. I actually think it’d be cool for pub play if the respawn time was inversely proportional to the current status of your team ie if your team is doing worse (judged by assets held or something) you get the benefit of slightly shorter spawn periods. Nothing major, just a way to keep it fun.

(Rippin Kitten) #31

Its a good idea, just horribly complicated to do. Having code that somehow “judged” the current state of the game in its totality would be nigh impossible. But maybe you could cut a few corners. Like say if your team keeps dying then your spawn timer becomes faster, and if your team is killing alot then your spawn timer becomes longer. Still, tough to balance out and protect from exploitation.

Anyway, the maxlivesrespawnpenality allows you to specify how many spawn cycles someone without lives has to wait before they can rejoin the game. Unfortunately, even after they wait out the penality if they die they have to sit it out again. It would be nice if you could set this up so that they get their lives back for waiting out the penality. You could have like 3 lives only. After you burn through those you have to sit out the penality then you get them back. This way you still reward players for staying alive and medics for being on the ball, but you don’t have people hiding behind walls and lingering in the back lines because they’re afraid of losing a life.

I think this is my main complaint with max lives servers. It makes players too cautious and even afraid of combat. I took the earlier advice and played on some ND80 servers this week. What I noticed (aside from anti-lag being turned off, which kinda sucked =( ) is that players were no longer being aggressive. As Axis this wasn’t a problem, and my general gameplay didn’t change a bit. I could sit on the ridge on fueldump and call arty on the tank all day. But on the allied side no one seemed to take any risks or take one for the team to further the objective. I was the only engie dodging airstrikes and mortar rounds to get the bridge built. Everyone else was either sniping, hiding in the trees, trading panzer shots, or generally avoiding all combat. When we got to battery it was even worse. It could have just been the time I was playing (Thurs, Fri, Sat mid afternoon) or maybe just the players, but maxlives seemed to suck the drive out of the allied team.

Maybe it was just that experience. I’ll probably try it again sometime later. It just turned me off from the maxlives scene to see people more concered with saving up their lives to the detriment of the mission objectives.

ND80: Quick question… I’m @ work right now, and so can’t check… But is it obvious by your server names if they are LLS or not? I’ve been trying to find a LLS to play on, but it’s been pretty much just trial and error, and all error thus far. I just checked your website, and I wasn’t able to tell by clicking on the server viewer…

If I can find out how to tell which servers are LLS, you can definitely count me in.

(ND80) #33

the moment i see strategy, planning, or teamwork on a max lives server, i think i’ll shit myself.

no matter how much u argue about it, maxlives does not make your team, or people playing the game play any less cheap. actually, it gives them a good reason to play more cheap. this usually ends up in a domination by one team because they are doing something like spawn killing, or making everyone on their team a soldier with panzers and moble mg42’s. no matter which way you slice it, you aren’t gonna do anything speceal and make the players magically start playing the game the way it was meant to be played… for some reason, there is too much of a drive for that person to win, no matter which means needs to be taken in order to get that done, and yes, this does include having the boring job of sitting at a machine gun and mowing down everyone who peeks around the corner.

i’ve played on many ml servers and ul servers… they all share the same qualities… if you are playing with friends who are good players, then you are having fun – if you’re playing with people who you dont know; and they are playing cheap and retarded like they do at any public server, then you generally just aren’t gonna have fun.

my personal solution: play on private servers, and leave the pubs to newbs.

There is a little green helmet icon in the in-game browser
between the “FF” and Punkbuster icons that
indicates limited-lives servers.

It’s easy enough to set a filter for them too.

Hey ND80 seeing as you obviously have a fleet of trucks full of money and guinness, well you must have to fork out all the cash for all those servers, does this also mean that you’re the head man of something like the Irish mob or some shit like that ?..ah, Sir (or if like me a Derry boy “Chief”).

(ETplayer) #37

maybe he’s JUSt in the irish mafia… :suspicious:, u kno the family takes care for eachother :moo:

Took care of it boss. The little bugger cried like a baby - until he passed out. Do you want me to put his thumb with the rest of them?
