Tap the boost button in small bursts while holding forward to gain momentum, press and hold jump before hitting the ground and you’ll ‘ski’ across the ground without losing speed.
Map Speedruns: On YouTube!
Press and hold jump to ski. Use your thrusts to gain speed and land on a slope with jump pressed and look at yourself crossing the map in a few seconds.
I couldn’t quite find anything that would display the speed on youtube (Hav ing little luck trying it out) - anyone know of any?
I’m quite sure there’s a clip of rglaf doing it on ark somewhere, from the strogg spawn to the ark in a few seconds.
edit: can’t find that clip, but I found this:
He’s not going all that fast for most of the video, at the end (about 3:00) he does get some neat speed as he’s crossing the water.
I did a bit of testing and the top speed of a Hog is somewhere between 160 and 170 kph. The maximum speed I’ve attained is 168 kmh and I did that on Ark, driving from the main base to the first objective. I can’t repeat that on a regular basis though and I think that has to do with the line you take. Steering corrections seem to shave off a lot of speed and I think it’s best to avoid them as much as possible. That run is (slightly) downhill which probably improves the top speed of the Hog.
I can get to about 150 kmh in an Icarus, but I remember getting higher speeds then that in earlier tries on Quarry. I managed to get to 180 kph back then. You have to get it “right” though, if you want to achieve those kind of speeds.
An Icarus is probably faster then a Hog when in capable hands, but it’s a bit more tricky as well.
I don’t know if these commands work in a console version of this game, but you can check your speeds if you have a PC version by playing against a computer, enabling cheats (net_allowcheats “1”) and typing this in the console: g_showplayerspeed “1”. You can check the speeds you achieved in the console afterwards.
As an aside: I never use the space bar when flying an Icarus. In my view it’s all about landing on the right spot and having the right angle when you press boost.

the idea of skiing with an icarus is to hold the jump button before landing (not the engine boost; the jump button), it will make you maintain your current velocity.
Google ‘tribes 2 skiing’ to see how it looks like when perfected.
I believe there are some youtube videos of QW skiing as well.
NO CLUE how/if it can be done on consoles though.

oh and what this guy says. You have to do a slanting downwards with your icarus, and you have to jump when you land to bounce and not just land, and use the slow accelerating boosters. I I always do that, and I never noticed it. But icarus being faster than hog is not consistent. Consistently achieving faster speeds in different types of terrain is inconsistent. But icarus skiing is a good technique to use, because it is readily available. I’d say if a normal person used it, it be as fast as the husky.
well, in the ark example; proper skiing will get you to the 1st objective up to a second faster.
Can depend on the spawn though (might be, that your spawning in the right forward part of the strogg base, in which case its faster to use the hog)
