Will there be a map editor? if so when will it be out, I wunna make maps
Map editor?
There’s an interview with Jonathan Moses, an Activision Producer, on RTCWOnline who states that tools will be made available for mappers, but that they’re not planing to release source code at the moment.
It is really sad if they aren’t releasing the game source code. It could have been a huge opportunity for the mod community.
Maybe they could do it like garage games and license it out for a small fee.
I suppose they are worried about it cutting into the sales of other q3 engine games.
Ya, but they released the source for Q1 and Q2 and some of the duke nukems… all according to the GDL or something… but ya, giving the public the source for one of the best selling game engines might be bad… but no one could actually sell anything unless they actually licensed it from ID…
Don’t confuse the game code with the engine code. The game code for q3, rtcw etc has all been released. The engine code has not (and is quite spendy to license). The game code allows you to make mods (including total conversions like wildwest and wolftactics), but all users of the mod must have the associated engine. The engine and game code for q1, q2 etc has been released under the GPL. If you have the engine code, you can make completely new standalone games.
Many of us expected that the game code for ET would also be released, since this is what id has done in the past, but now it appears that this might not be the case.
The activision person quoted wasn’t entirely clear on which they were talking about. For that matter, neither was the questions.
Honestly I’m not terribly surprised that game code isn’t being released. Considering that the game is a free add-on.
If they release the game code, they have to support it. Of course, they don’t have to according to any law, contract, or even courtesy. However, as game designer, you feel a need, an urge, to let people in on how everything works. Once you’ve made that commitment to the public, you just can’t stand to leave it at that. If SplashDamage were to release the game code, it’s quite likely that they would waste a lot of their good time supporting modders.
One should also consider that Activision and id software might be allowing the full game to be released for free as an expirement in licensing. Their incentive to release for free might be considered an opportunity to observe game license inquiries after release.
Of course, this is all speculation (IANAL, etc.) and I am a big fan of id software and activision. I wouldn’t put it past them to merely release this game out of sheer kindness. They’re cool like that, and that’s why I only play id software first person shooters and games that license their technology.
Merely releasing Quake 1 and 2 under the GNU General Public License (GPL) was a very gracious act. Don’t site the “old technology” justification to me, as Half Life was based on the same Quake 1 engine code and it’s still going strong.
In the end, they’re a generous couple of companies and if they don’t wish to release either the game or engine code I will respect that.
Uhh, they released the game code for rtcw and q3 with pretty much zero support. Don’t see why ET would be any different.
I’m not surprised their not releasing the source code to a free Q3 game.
Think about it … all q3 RtCW JK2 ect mods could fairly easily re-produce
their mods in ET, which ANYONE could then play & thus all players
will not need to buy any game to play the mods !.. no incentive for
ID / Activision to help the modding community for these retail games,
as it would not lead to more sales of the original game… in fact
you could even make an ET mod that played just like Wolf, or Quake III.
Business wise its just would not make sense to release the source for ET.
Shame though… we could do with a few “fresh” players in the WildWest
Hewster
I think it’d be smart to not release any mod tools. They should try to make a buck on this and sell a map expansion of 3-5 new campaigns and sell it for $20 US. I’d pay for it for sure and I’m also sure that a lot of other people would too.
Well, considering that SD is made up of the best of the best out of the q3 and rtcw modding communities, they naturally want to foster their own modding communities.
However, no game source will be released. I don’t mind that at all, because I would not change a thing. Enemy Territory is awesome.
They can’t keep mapping tools from us, either, we already have many of the necessary components.
Releasing the code for a fee would be cool, but theres so much scope for leakage that it wouldnt really be feasable tbh
You sure they are not one in the same? If you download the source code for RTCW 1.41 you get EVERYTHING you need to compile a standalone game (except punkbuster). I thought it was the artwork and sounds you had to license if you want to sell something based on RTCW.
Many of us expected that the game code for ET would also be released
Just whine about it enough and you’ll get it like the people who whined about grenades and panzers.
Oh and the guy who said it would be easy to rewrite Jedi Knight 2 with the ET engine. ROFL. Start now and send me a postcard when your done.
you could not create a full standalone game, all you could do was make a total conversion mod.
the engine code costs several hundred thousand dollars to get
Better tell him to send the postcard to one of your grandsons  …he may have more success then
Actually, jk2 and et both use quake3 technologies, so they are brothers anyway
Peeps also thought the source would not be available to wolf… it didnt come along until patch 1.33 was out if i think correctly
The point is that you could write a total conversion mod which played like q3 or sof2 or whatever. Look at urban terror compared to quake3. Doing something like that is no more work than making ET play like JK2.
More realisticly, maintainers of existing TCs might switch to ET, so that their users wouldn’t have to buy ANY game to play. That would be great for the TCs but bad for the sales the other games.
