Mac-version

First of all, great job on the ET, from what I’ve seen about it, I can say it rocks.
So, yeas, I confess I downloaded the MapTest1.0 and tried to run it on my Mac.

Ofcourse I wasn’t surprised it didn’t work

So ofcourse I’m asking you: Are there plans to port it to Mac?
I know you’re doing this all for free, and making a Mac-version takes some time (not a whole lot, I can assure you), but still… Is there a slight chance (Hello Aspyr? ) that it’s comming to the mac-community as well?

I’ve checked the new files from ET, and after mixing a bit, I managed to make RTCW recognize ET-servers and showing a splash-screen of ET @ connecting to them tohether with a message, i can’t read, because indeed PC DLL’s don’t run very good on Mac… My guess is the PC “ui” DLL can’t be read and therefor screws with the fonts used in the game .

Now I’ve also noticed some DLL files come with ET, and my guess is, that besides the app itself (where Aspyr can certainly help, seeing that they ported RTCW for us), the only thing needed to do is recompile the DLL’s (it’s doable, check OSP 0.83 for Mac :))

Anyway, I’m like writing too much again, so I’ll stop…

But? Is there a chance?

Please… :frowning:

I really don’t think they have any plans for mac. They’re were no mac beta testers, so if you have a mac. I wouldnt count on it. Best thing to do… get a PC : )

PC = :banana:
Mac = :banghead:

Typical PC user reaction :blah:

Naah, I stick with Mac… Running on a 3 year old Super computer, playing all latest games and apps…

And like I said… Wouldn’t be a whole lot of work, and you’d make lots of people very happy. Don’t forget Mac RTCW community is alive!
I’m for one clanleader of an RTCW clan. Only mac user in the clan, but one of the best

And since lots of clans do have Mac players in them, I think there should be a port made to mac. I don’t see why a linux-version would be made, and no mac-version, since Mac OS X = UNIX :eek3:

And for the beta-testers, if I’d have heard about ET sooner, I’d have gladly help the developpers. And if they are interested, there are a lot of fine programmers out there who’d love to bring ET to Mac.

So, Mr. developpers, any news on this?

C ya,
PJ

Very very funny.
Im a Mac user, and i PERSONALLY know around 25/26 other RTCW playing Mac. peeps.
TBH i would think there are MORE Mac. players out there than Linux users, (obviously this is just speculation on my part) but to ignore us would be a horrible blow to us, WE WANNA PLAY TO!!! :frowning:

all they would need to do is release the source code, which is inevitable seeing that they did so with rtcw. Once that is done, it would probably be ported by the community – good chance omni group would take up the project. sooner they release of the source, the better.

(deSIN) #6

I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope so, the faster the better tbh

I’m holding my breath for a Mac port, and I hope Aspyr and Westlake can work something out…

PS: Please don’t turn this into a Mac vs PC thread, we use these computers for a reason.

(PoisedNoise) #8

Please please please bring it to the mac - I likewise am the only mac member of my clan, but they stick with me (even though atm teamspeak deosn’t work) because they value my playing ability (or something… :???: )

I know of a lot of rtcw clans with valuable mac members - there will need to be a lot of rejigging of clans if mac members are frozen out, even in the short to medium term… and besides, we want in - as was said above, this isn’t a pc vs. mac thing… we have these machines for good reasons and it doesn’t mean we don’t know how to throw a good nade…

PN

Put me down for a mac version. I think it would be a shame for this to not be ported at some point. RTCW is very popular with mac users. I’m not going to beg, but please at least consider it. OSX only would be fine.

(MattOSX) #10

Put me down for the Mac version, too. Graeme Devine did the last MP Tests for the Mac, and I hope he’ll eventually do them again for us.

The surprising thing is that they released a Linux version, now that required extra work and I know no one who plays games in Linux.

(Slappy) #11

Bump for the Macness. I second (or third, or fourth) the opinions about Macs in clans, I’m one as well. Love playing along side my PeeCee brethren, love to continue with the ET expansion.

(Ingue Ferroque) #12

Porting to Linux is very easy compared to porting to Mac OSX, considering its on X86 hardware.

(Kesh) #13

Another Mac user here. I’d love to try this out, and had planned on buying the full version.

(SCDS_reyalP) #14

There are some who do, but more importantly a large number of people run linux on their servers.

That is not correct. Only the game source to rtcw was released, not the engine source. Id still charges $250,000 or so for the quake3 engine source. You can’t do a port with just the game code. Indeed, people had quite a bit of trouble getting client side mods for rtcw to work on the mac.

I’m just here to say that I to would love to see ET on the mac.
I still play online everynight with RTCW and I think this expansion would really go down well with the “illusive, yet very mighty Mac gaming community”. Atleast consider our request, and don’t just ignore us, if you can do it for Windows and Linux for free, then the Mac version shouldn’t be too much of a bothe should it? Some pc users would be surprised to find that they’re constantly being owned by mac users, but we don’t usually brag about it

(MattOSX) #16

I know Linux comprises a large percentage of the server landscape, but not people who actually use it day to day to play games.

To extend my previous statement, in addition from not knowing any who uses Linux for games, I know no one who uses Linux at all (in real life). I know little about Linux, I know there is Linux for PowerPCs…but that’s it.

I know OSX has eased porting, I mean, Graeme Devine released the previous MP Tests fairly quickly. Anyhow, my main concern is that the Mac community can continue to play.

well as i’ve experienced, you can drop those .pk3 files on any OS and architechture— i’ve taken quake 3 area, the mac version and transfered it to a pc, then downloaded the pc binaries and it worked fine, same with rtcw. the engine remember was done in c, not x86 assembly. all they would need to do is use the work westlake did to port rtcw and sync with this project, or it can be done from scratch with the pc binary source of et… which would take a lot longer.

Right. The game media is portable, and for the most part, the code is as well. All I was saying is that this some something id/splash/activision/westlake have to do, not something the comunity can do, even after the game source is released. RTCW is a bit harder to port than q3, because q3 could use QVMs, wheres wolf uses native code only. I’m not sure about ET.

I’d love to see a Mac version

(PoisedNoise) #20

wow 10 posts in 2 hours. No-one can say the mac-ers don’t care about this one.
