Is Mobile Mg42 really worth it ?

(Borsuk) #1

I don’t think so it’s worth it. I was using various weapons as Soldier, and here’s my opinion:

  • Panzerfaust: quite easy to use, and a force to be reckoned with. Great for clearing foxholes and not only.

  • Flamethrower - harder to master, and useful mainly in specific places (like Battery - Axis - near assault ramp, forward bunker entrance, main bunker entrance. If you learn how to use it, it’s worth it.

  • Mortar - I’m not skilled with it, but people say it’s very useful if mastered. I guess it has good potential, even if it’s problematic.

  • Mobile Mg42 - uhh… I don’t like it. Let’s compare it to stationary one.

= stationary never runs out of ammo. You don’t have much ammo without Field Ops.
= stationary has MUCH wider angle. With mobile, I can only shoot targets directly ahead of me.

Mobile mg is hard to deploy, there are many funny places where you can’t prone. I wish it could be deployed when crouched (on a box, low wall or something like that).

You can’t shoot targets that are below your horizon effectively, because the weapon is so huge and obscures your vision. It’s worthless on Battery as Axis if you ask me.

I tried to use it a lot deploying in various places, and found only few places quasi-worth it. Even if so, it’s not that deadly (at least in my hands, I haven’t seen any DEADLY minigunners either. Minigunner is in fact nice, stationary target. If you take some time to go secondary route and toss a grenade, he’s dead meat.

===

My suggestion - mobile Mg should have +60 degree angle or so.

Play with it a bit more.

It is THE best defensive weapon you can have. Just two of these can nearly hold off an entire team if you learn how to position yourself correctly.

The one point I absolutely agree with is that the field of fire for the mg-42 is to limited, players should be able to strafe while being proned with a MG-42 to fire at different angels, maybe prohibit movement but pleeeeeease, allow the MG-42 soldier to rotate !

(bani) #4

you can already rotate, you just need to undo the bipod first :moo:

not a bad tradeoff for an mg42 that can rotate 360 degrees…

(senator) #5

yeah, I know but its to freaking slooooow! And I dont see the logic, if I can crawl around with the bipod set up why can’t I rotate ??
It takes 4 sec. to undo the bipod, rotate and set up the bipod, that might not sound like much if you read it in this forum but it’s an eternity if you just came under enemy fire and try to react or saw an enemy group of soldiers slightly out of your field of fire.

Personally, I play more and more as a soldier, and I mainly use the MG42 or Flamethrower if there already is 1 or 2 Mgs in my team.

Well, Let’s continue to compare.

stationary is usually in easy to see places, making you an ideal target for Snipers
Mobile, you can be anywhere

stationary is usually in the open, making it ideal target for artiallery and air strikes
Mobile can be hidden inside a building etc.

stationary are not always placed, even rarely, placed where you actually need MG support,

Mobile can be delpoyed anywhere to support troops.

And about the ammo, It is the job of the field ops to give you ammo, if he doesn’t give him the boot :stuck_out_tongue: nah, just ask him normally they will comply. People are still learning, After some time, we will have some good Filed ops too.

P.S.: sorry for my half a thousand errors I made in this post, I just woke up and can’t find my words :).

I love the weapon. If I can get hooked up with another soldier using it and a decent LT, we can set up a great cross fire scenerio that will lock down any area.

That weapon on Depot/gold rush is a gratuitous lvl 4 for heavy weapons cert. And personally, I have respect for the soldiers using it, rather than the PF joker ( who usually seem to be drawn to respawn points every 40 seconds…).

(Veritas) #8

i love the mg42… although often when i use it, the field ops are too busy doing airstrikes or are on the other side of the map. :frowning:

THAT GUN ROCKS

(Swad) #10

The mobile MG42 is all about placement. If you know where / how to properly position yourself with it, you can be lethal. I think it definitely has a role and is a GREAT defensive weapons. It’s definitely not strong on the offensive front, but is great for choke points and holding off an enemy offensive–if used right.

(Iamthefallen) #11

Try being an MG42 soldier on fueldump and defend the footbridge. You’ll find that you will be able tol hold of all enemies singlehandedly as long as you have ammo. Occasionally a panzer will get through to you yeah, but the kill/death ratio is amazing with the mg42 when guarding those choke points. If you have ammo Mg42 is a great weapon, pick a spot to sit, and nothing will pass you alive.

Fieldops:
For crying out loud make sure that the soldiers covering an area have ammo, both panzers, mg42s and mortars need a lot of it, they come before medics or engineers. Medics and engineers can do their jobs without ammo, a soldier cannot.

(ShanK-fOO) #12

The MG42 is my favorite weapon.

It’s super-effective on radar, especially for Axis where you can spawn right next to the ammo rack and then head out to set up near one of the pinch points…

(Brinkman) #13

lol how cna you say this… you obviously haven’t used it the correct way

it’s used to hold back enemy advancements where stationary machine guns nests aren’t located… such as the map oasis… axis can setup machine gun posts in the ruined city… there are only 2 entry points for allies (3rd being the tunnel)… if you setup two guys to constantly put fire on those two positions you can hold back the allies for quite some time

granted if you have a field ops there giving you ammo…

machine gunner is a VERY important member on the team

learn how to use them first

oh yeh when im dead and specing through other teammates point of view i noticed A LOT of n00bs dont know how to use this weapon… first they walk around with it instead of switching to pistol and running AND they shoot it standing up or it’s unsupported prone position… and wonder why they aren’t hitting anyone

(Ifurita) #14

very well worth it, but reqires teamwork - ammo and someone to watch your blind spots

(FstFngrz) #15

AT level 4 you can unload whole clips without overheating. LETHAL :skull:

(Brinkman) #16

man i find getting to level 4 tuff hwen you’re a machine gunner… i must need practice >_<

I generally don’t play soldier, and haven’t had alot of opportunity to play with the MG42. However, as others have noted, it is a devastating defensive weapon.

The other night I was an axis on Gold Rush… the allies crashed through the forward defenses pretty quickly. Our team seemed to mostly clueless newbs but a few of the more experienced players grabbed up MG42s and made for the bank. With two of them we kept the allies out for the most part but a friendly medic was the only thing keeping us up and running. Then a third MG42 showed up and an ally couldn’t peak his head around the corner without getting blasted. Despite some valiant effort by the allies to sneak in using covertOps, the only way they were going to get that gold would be some well-coordinated PF/grenade assaults and a quick dash in and out.

The MG42 rules as a defensive weapon. Position it knowing it has a limited fire arc. If an enemy escapes your blast, it is now someone else’s job to finish him off. Multiple MG42s should not have their arcs coincide - though some overlap is a good thing. The arcs should complement each other. Also, think of the objective and where you can put your MG42 to deny the enemy. This may not be the way to get the most points, but I play the maps to achieve/deny the objectives.

MG42 is great and it has its role. Its a support weapon. You use it mostly as a defense weapon. I have been a long time DOD player and more or less know how and when to use it (In DOD is a must).

Still I agree its field of view shouldn’t be so limited. Also you should be able to deploy it on special places like in DOD (boxes, sandbags, some walls, etc.) without having to go prone.

Play a s team…and you’ll win as a team…play individually and you’ll lose alone.

(Dr.Fragenstein) #19

the fact that it’s a defensive weapon is it’s biggest problem. Noob’s will set up an mg42, mow down the area, but then they’ll stay camped out and not advance their position. That behavior might be justified for defense, but when you’re trying to take an objective they don’t help the team advance.

Guess I’m in gripe mode from a round on Gold Rush last night, playing as allies. We got pushed back to our spawn and never made it out for the last 15 minutes of the round. When noobs get pushed back they often change class to soldier (panzer/mg42/flamethrower). That’s fine for a spawn or two but please switch to something useful soon (hint: medic or engr is a good idea). During this round we had 3 soldiers, 1 field ops, 4 covert ops(!), and I as the lone medic. No friggin wonder we got our ass kicked. [Gripe mode off]

It’s deadly effective. On the railgun map, You can set up inside the Axis base (if Axis) and defend against Allies marching on your spawn point, or as Allies you can climb atop the railgun and mow them down.

Everything is dependent on FieldOps, though, without ammo, you’ve got no gridlock.
