If I never played W:ET . . . .

(Nishua) #41

Ok, I just played. I was lost, confused, scared, and got pwned. I had know idea what was going on. Anyway, Ill try it again tomorrow. A few questiosn ? Do you have to play on ETpro servers ? how come people prefer them ? Also how do you know where the obecjtives are in the game ?

(SCDS_reyalP) #42

There are currently 2 popluar mods for ET. ETPro and ETPub.

ETPro is used by leagues and ladders, and generally is aimed at keeping the basic gameplay but fixing bugs and adding features that are good for competition. ETPro fixes a LOT of bugs.

The other popular mod is ETPub, which focuses more on “fun” gameplay variations. Which one you like is up to you, but many feel that etpro is more true to the original, and that some etpub features are unbalancing.

Almost all the etpub changes that affect gameplay are optional, so it’s hard to know what you are going to get before you join the server. For example, one server might have poison needles an underwater revives, while another might have double jump, and a third might have different hit boxes. ETPro has options that change gameplay as well, but there are less of them, and many servers tend to follow the league settings.

Also how do you know where the obecjtives are in the game ?

You can look at the command map or limbo screen. Both show icons for most objectives. The limbo menu also has descriptions of them. That said, to really learn them you just have to explore the maps. It’s just a fact that you will be lost until you learn your way around. If you want to prepare yourself, host your own game as DG suggested, or just follow people into battle until you figure it out.

(datoo) #43

No.

how come people prefer them ?

Mainly because servers running ETPub usually have all kinds of things enabled for “fun” that change the gameplay. Off the top of my head there things like playing dead, jumping on people to kill them, new functions for the weapons, etc. This is fun for a lot of people, but more competitive minded players like to play the game the way it was originally designed.

Also how do you know where the obecjtives are in the game ?

On the bottom of the limbo menu (default “L”), you can cycle through the objectives and it shows you where they are on the map. Also, while playing you can bring up the command map (default “G”) which has icons for the objectives. Other than that you just have to learn the maps.

Dont worry, everybody does the first week :). I would recommend finish a map on an empty server (preferably fueldump, being allies Engineer). Look at the commandmap (enlarge with g) and see where to go. There are buildboxes on it (you can fix them) and dynamites, you need to get a dynamite there to blow it up (dont forget arming it with the tool, pressing left-mouse after dropping the dyna). Also try all keys so you get an idea what to do on a map, in all other maps follow the rest and see on the command map where the important things are (flags and dynamites).

ETPro PWNZ because of: Extra anticheat integration (like PB,so PB+ETPro is hell for cheaters), extra options. And these options rock like alternative (smaller) huds, hitsounds (including teh goat sound for stabbing some1  ). Also fixes some bugs and gives sometimes other spawnpoints 9also in fueldump) so the teams are more balanced.

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve been playing W:ET for 3 years and I’m still lost half the time due to all the obscure maps that I’ve never bothered to get acquainted with. There are maybe a couple dozen “common” maps, including the default 6, which you will eventually get to know like your own home.

some tips:

  • to feel less “confuse” try to join servers with less players. 24 slots servers tend to have a lot of spamm going on and they might be a bit hard to learn the ways into the game. in competitions the game is played 6on6, so try to find servers with 16 slots. they’re the best to learn the game imo.

  • ETPro, as everyone has mentioned here, fixed a lot of things/bugs in ET and is one of the most solid Mod’s out there. ETPro team is responsible for ETPro and ETTV (another mod that allows you to watch clan matches with other players, just like you were watching TV). they simply rock. People usually prefer ETPro servers because of that.

  • You have 2 types of objectives in ET: primary and secondary. Secondary objectives are the ones that will allow your team to have greater advantage in a determined map. But to win a Map, you just have to finish the primary objectives. Usually, secondary objectives consist on repairing or building structures. Primary ones, usually consist on blowing something up (example, Battery beach map, where allied team must blow up a giant Gun) OR stealing technology (example: Wurzburg Radar, where allied team must steal top secret radar parts and deliver them to a truck), gold (example: Goldrush map, where Allied team must steal 2 gold crates from an Axis bank).

  • Someone mentioned here to leave auto-download stuff from servers ON. I disagree. I think you should disable it untill you get acquainted with the game. There are a lot of servers that, when you connect to them, will try to download lot’s of useless trash into your computer (ungly maps, useless skins, etc). That would probably would even confuse you more. Just install ET, install ETPro (just get the .zip file and extract it to the directory where you installed ET - it should create a new dir like Wolfenstein ET\etpro) and play!

try to find some friend with whom you can explore the game. it’s faster and a lot more fun than to do it alone! good luck!

I considered that of course, but since any skin/sound packs would only work on the server from which he downloaded them (and possibly a few others, as well as the rare unpure servers), they shouldn’t become a problem for a new player.

I’m actually very strict about what I allow in my own game folder, but I don’t see a need for a new player to worry about that on top of just trying to learn the game.

(kamikazee) #48

Welll - there are in fact a few troublesome pk3’s, like those translating your whole W:ET install to a foreign language.

(Zyklon) #49

I also advise turning autodownload off. All those “funny” sound files, those “funny” UT sounds and those “pretty” player skins, and also those “pretty” menus with 1337 clan-logos, are just a pain in the ass. You can get the needed mod files and the maps from download sites too, especially as there are just a few ones out that are really played.

By the way, on official maps, you can go into the limbo menu and press the triangular “play” button next to small window showing the primary objectives. This will play a sound file explaining you the map.

Play as Axis
Axis are very newbie friendly. You don’t need to know anything, or coordinate attacks. It’s enough to sit there and shoot incoming enemies. It will still take you some time to learn where all the objectives are, but it’s easier this way.

The command map
Command map is unusable in action, but you can see objectives on it. Press m to show command map (default).
IPORTANT: sometimes you can change your spawn on command map. Click on a flag if there’s more than one. Automatic spawn changes (like when your team captures something) are usually better.

Avoid friendly fire
Flags are mines, not powerups. Colored smoke is artillery or airstrike, run.

Keep a small distance from team members
This reduces chance of entire team getting owned by a grenade, artillery, panzer. Being very close to team members makes it harder for them to dodge and retreat when wounded.
Crowds are very bad in bottlenecks, search for alternate route.

Don’t crouch/crawl too often
Usually, crouching just makes you easier to hit. There’s an accuracy bonus, but it’s unimportant at short and medium ranges, and your hitbox isn’t much smaller.

MP40 and Thompson
Learn quickly to distinguish their sounds. This reduces the confusion, you can sense where enemies/teammates are without seeing them.

Watch for crossdressers
Covert Op can dress in enemy uniforms. Easiest way to detect disguised enemy is to put your crosshairs on him. If there’s no name/health bar, shoot.
If a teammate runs in opposite direction than anyone else, he’s probably a disguised enemy.
If you aim at disguised friendly covert op, he’ll have big red sign on him.
(disguise is dangerous against newbies, but mostly pointless against anyone else).

Join a server and look at the scores, pick a name that has a high score, then :

  1. Become an observer (3rd option when choosing a team), and type /follow THENAMEFROMTHESCOREBOARD in the console (hit ~ to open the console). Watching a player that knows what they are doing can clue you in fast.

  2. Follow that player while playing. You wil probably die from immediately seeing another player, but following someone gives you a chance to register what is going on first, and lets you use them as a shield. If you are having problems finding/following someone, you can ask them if they will join a fireteam with you, so you can easily find them.

(ouroboro) #52

Speaking of shields, after reviving a teammate as medic they briefly become invulnerable. This is because they are disoriented after being revived and can’t defend themselves. An added benefit is that they become a wall for you to hide behind and reload, heal yourself, etc. As long as you see a blue shield icon above someone’s head (teammate or enemy) they cannot be harmed…

…unless the server admin is a completely clueless gimp who decides they just don’t like the shields, ignoring 5 years of precedence by disabling/shortening them. This is a pet peeve of mine. The revive shield is integral to Wolf gameplay and only the greenest of admins would not understand this.

Remember this also when you see an enemy spawn. Don’t shoot until their spawn shield icon disappears or you’re just wasting ammo.

(kamikazee) #53

The problem is rather what to do when they spot you whilst they are still invulnerable. Oh joy I had when entering the oasis town in the middle of a spawnwave.

(Nishua) #54

Update Things are going well, I’m finally understanding how to do get objectives. Probably is I still cant kill anyone. Is seems like everyone I encounter mows me over in like 2 second. I’ve never been this bad at any FPS I’ve played. In a way it feels like there are alot of cheaters in this game, but before went i accusing people I did some reasearch. According to several players I talked to extensively there is a high volume of cheaters who play ET. I hope SD address this issues with QW. Anyway what are some ways , I coudl improve my killing techinques. Also when aiming do you need to lead your targets or is just points and shoot ? How do pings affect the game if leading isnt necessary ?

(madness) #55

Just aim for the head :stuck_out_tongue:
Keep your crosshair on head-level when running around, so you can quickly open fire when someone pops out from behind a corner or smth…

(Zyklon) #56

The hitbox for the head is slightly behind the actual model, you need to pay attention to that. But there is, thanks to the great ETpro netcode, no necessity to lead.

Oh and there are way less cheaters than you may think. This isn’t CS. There are alot of pros that can really kick your ass.
If you get into firefights alot, take the medic, he is basically the Grunt in this game. Strafe a lot when fighting, don’t jump, aim at you traget, and fire in bursts to not get too inaccurate. Crouch when you get into long range fights, but not in close fights! You’ll just be easy fodder for someone that is used to shooting a target at belly level. Run for cover when you’re low on health or reloading.

And read the ET faq, it is a good read.

(ouroboro) #57

There aren’t many cheaters in W:ET “per-capita.” Don’t listen to those people. Most likely they are simply not very good, so they think everyone cheats as well. They might be the resident e-celeb on their pubclan server, but even the best of those types of players would cry hax if they joined a league and faced some top teams. I’m going to get horrible backlash for saying that, but it’s the truth. You will know it when you are being blatantly aimbotted. The whole server will empty or everyone will go spec. See The Truth about Cheating in ET by Kendle for more info.

The fact is, you’re bound to get mowed over. You’re coming into a 3 year old game as a new player.

On ETPro servers especially, there’s no need to lead your target. The ETPro antilag is fantastic. In fact, most mods and even ETMain have pretty decent antilag, when it’s enabled. Just set your browser filters to only show you servers with antilag, and connect to those with the lowest pings. With ETPro you don’t even have to filter for it, because antilag is a client decision. Just be sure b_antilag is set to 1 in your config (turn it on in the menu options).

And finally, as was mentioned above, AIM FOR THE HEAD (not all weapons distinguish headshots, aim for the center off mass with the MG42 for example). Assuming an enemy with 100 HP and a helmet, it would take 6 body shots from a Thompson/MP40/Colt/Luger to kill them, but only 3 headshots (or 2 head + 1 body). Headshots are absolutely critical in this game. Since most players will have much more than 100 HP (up to 156 HP, depending), this becomes even more important. You won’t get far without learning to hit the head in W:ET. Turn on your hitsounds and listen for the different sound when landing headshots. If the server/mod has no hitsounds, look at the blood splatter. Body blood is dark with black streaks in it, while head blood is bright red and misty.

Basically, always try to take your opponent’s helmet off. Also, most people would agree that lower sensitivity helps. You really shouldn’t need to do more than a 180 with a sweep of the wrist. Most top players do far less than that.

Someone mentioned the head box being behind the model. That’s almost universally untrue at this point. Most ETPro and ETPub servers use b_realhead (one would hope). In the old days the head box was indeed way off, but it would only be misleading to teach a new player about that now. Just aim for the head exactly as you see it.

(MuffinMan) #58

being good at other games doesn’t mean much, I’m playing cs source until et:qw is out (before it was rtcw and et for me) and one clan member is place 10 in ESL 1on1 cs source, which means he shoots me down almost constantly

we played et together for some times and even when he was a bit used to the game he stood no chance. the fighting style is substantially different from counter strike, battle field, rainbow six games, call of duty or whatever I played up to now - if at all comparable then to quake but slower, ex quake players seem to be pretty good at rtcw/et

players of top teams will definitely keep kicking your ass for a long time and you won’t understand how they did it

(Senethro) #59

Nishua, what accuracies %age are you getting with the MP40 and thompson?

(Nishua) #60

^^ Ill play a few games and ill let you know. Thanx for the info guys, ill read up and keep practicing.
