OMG! It has XBox icons available to it! It Must be a port!!!
</sarcasm>
I played Brink at quakecon, some concerns
It still amazes me when people cry over words… I’m pretty sure most of people were saying that there was a port’s feeling in this game, feeling acquired thru the many points they have made (unibutton etc…). Now if you cant understand that and lock yourself in your “its not a port, so its not a port dumbnutts” state of mind, glad for you…
We are discussing ideas and general feelings here, we arent discussing the meaning of the word “port”… Well, at least I wont lower myself to discuss a so trivial stuff!
@aimology : and I thought I was trolling oO Watch your mouth from time to time, it wont make us feel you are such a giant {insert random insult here}, even if your concerns are rights IMO.
Peace
Yeah, justice league strikes back… jRAD, seriously, please quit infracting people for their opinions, even if these opinions may hit badly the ego’s of some justice league brown-nosers.
I like SD and the games that it produced but the amount of brownnosing and censorshop on this forum is disgusting.
We are discussing the meaning of the word port. By the definitions you want to use, Brink is most certainly going to be a port because theres simultaneous development with the console versions. There aren’t many developers or franchises who can make big budget AAA games for the PC only and still make a profit. Firaxis Civilization is the only one I can think of offhand and even then they’re trying to move into the console market. Edit: Also, Starcraft. EditEdit: Games which need a mouse. Hmmm.
Is the code first being made to work on consoles and then crowbarred into a PC? No, and for that reason I think its not a port. Is there going to be some cross-pollination of design ideas due to different control systems and one eye kept on the different abilities of each hardware? Yes. Given that thats nearly every game these days, I don’t get why it would be a problem for Brink.

lol, the way you lot are behaving, i’m actually surprised you aren’t xbox kiddies shouting random abuse at players over XBL… you fit the profile any way. The Brain Trust at its best…

No, really, that isn’t whats going. Aimology was being rude, having an undeserved sense of entitlement, not offering useful feedback. People like Aimology have already decided the game won’t be good enough for them and so will repeatedly bash it like they’re the sole arbiters of good games. The punchline is that they’ll all buy it anyway on release just so they can keep moaning about it and because they’ve got nowhere else to go anyway. CoD? CS? Heh.
Its not censorship to hush the insulting windbags, its moderation and enabling discussion.

Opinions are totally fine and appreciated, so long as they’re not littered with offensive language and insults.
You don’t want to get infractions? Stick to the forum rules. It’s pretty simple.
I’m going to get a game I enjoy, and hopefully none of the Trust will buy it, win/win. Added bonus would be you not making little crappy movies with it either. Hey with the money you save from not buying it, you could buy a legit copy of fraps, that would be awesome!
Where did aimology’s post contain bad language? Or you seriously consider word **** (or simply 4 stars) a bad language?

Aren’t controls supposed to be different on PC ?
I remember Rahdo saying something about controls having a different behaviour on PC than consoles, but I can’t remember which example he gave us
This results in a little question : If the controls are changed “on the fly”, does it also changes the control behaviour?
Do you control like in others game that you are using a controller or kb during the game or it will be an option inside game settings ?

I was wondering about this too.
x360 controller support is not mandatory for the Games for Windows tag (Link), but if SD are adding support for the controller, how are they going to protect the x360 controller people from the mouse+kb people?
Or are they going to develop the game with an x360 controller option like they have now, then disable it for the final release? Or leave it as an unadvertised feature like the controller support in ETQW, so they don’t need to protect the people who choose to use it?
I played Brink at Quakecon as well and honestly it seemed fine. You guys need to remember this is a demo and the reason this was emulated on the PC was they want to prove they can match the gameplay you would experience on PC with a keyboard and mouse with a console using a controller with fewer buttons. As for the people at the demo station there were developers there, in fact I met Chris Sweetman whose the Audio Director and Richard Jolly. Trust me, the game will be fine at launch.

Do they need to defend controller users on PC?
I’m not sure theres even a way to do so without sabotaging the whole game.
Is that you, signofzeta?
The only thing I could think of is letting PC x360 controller players play on x360 or PS3 servers, but the servers are all separate IIRC. Or maybe having gamepad only PC servers, which would be urgh to regulate properly. Actually the PC on console servers would also be urgh to regulate properly. So I guess I can’t think of anything either.
So it looks like either:
- Develop all these x360 bits for the PC version, but don’t do anything to help PC gamepad players, effectively making them unusuable even though you’ve included all the stuff to make it function.
- Develop all these x360 controller bits for the PC version, then lock it all off for the final release.
Making assumptions about what SD have done and why they’ve done it is bad, right? Right?
I’m curious, that’s all.
SoZ thinks they can handle themselves, I think they’re just plain asking for it and should be allowed to experience the consequences
But yeah, its difficult to work out whats going on and second guessing of controller conspiracies isn’t going to get us anywhere.
On this, we agree.
If it had been decided to just let x360 and PS3 players play against PC players from the start, the x360 and PS3 systems would have significantly better control systems, because the players would have demanded it. The games would be better, because they wouldn’t be designed for the lowest common control systems.
At the very least, both systems should have controllers where the right analog stick is replaced by a frictionless-as-possible trackball. It’s not as good as a mouse, but at least it’s 1:1 and the skill curve is a hell of a lot straighter.
hehe, you put the main problem right there. It wasn’t the xbox version emulated on the pc…
It was the pc version!

Thats funny because I remember awhile back when I had a discussion with jRAD and I got banned for apparantly lecturing staff, my post didn’t contain any bad language or break any of the rules I just pointed out where jRAD was wrong. It seems unless you say the game is great or we love SD you get infraction (had them to in the past) or get banned.
So much for giving feedback and stating your opinion. It seems SD staff have a history of losing their tempers when they get criticism, I remember last year when Rahdo walked out on the Grenade thread.
