I played Brink at quakecon, some concerns

(f34n0r) #1

So I got to play Brink at quakecon. First, I have to ask, why were we playing the xbox 360 version being emulated on a PC with an xbox controller??? It was bizarre and the staff couldn’t explain it. You guys realize Quakecon was a “Bring Your Own Computer” event for PC gamers right? There was a token console village but very few people there care about consoles…

The game has a serious COD-esque nature to it with so many automated actions and combo-actions that you only need to initiate with the single push of a button (this will allow for lots of laziness and noobs to own someone with skill).

There is a major exploit with the combination of the SMART system and for lack of a better descriptor, the “use key.” When you are doing objectives, much like the problem with Wolf 2009, you can’t manually select your objective gear, you simply get the little hand icon if you are looking at the objective. Unfortunately, you can get this icon from very far away which can mess up your gameplay in the middle of a fire-fight. Add to this a major problem: if you engage the “use key” because you got the “objective prompt,” from far away, your character will automatically SMART seemingly half-way across the map over and under anything and everything and automatically do the objective all with the push of one button, you don’t even need to hold the SMART key…

You guys need to fix that asap as I doubt you seriously intended it to have that.

Other than that I would suggest removing earned XP to be able to be used on style, hair, tattoo or appearance changes as many noobs will waste all their “earned XP” money on that stuff while experienced players will use it to unlock combat items and the result in divide will make many noobs want to quit when they start getting owned and can’t earn XP points because they spent them on stupid stuff.

Missed Paul this year, hope to see you guys at PAX in a few weeks.

The staff manning the booth were basically volunteers/contractors. I don’t think they were even affiliated with SD at all, they just there to explain the game basics and to move the line along. As far as I ever heard, the reason was so they can show that the complex controls work on a controller, and because there was nowhere enough room in that booth for 8 mice and keyboards.

I’d also just like to point out how full of doodoo your comment about the SMART button being a way to kill pro players. Because I played it 3-4 times, and after the first round, I went 50 kills, 16 deaths one round, and had a ratio of at least 2 kills:deaths the other rounds. I didn’t use the SMART button at all besides to sprint to where the action was-- how the hell is SMART supposed to help you in a firefight? I got my kills by aiming, ironsighting at long distance, hipshot at close range.

If you were getting owned, it wasn’t because of the SMART button. It was because you were just not a very smart player.

The reason why the PC version was not shown and has not been shown is because its not ready, in fact I will be suprised if SD even have a working model of it. probably just going to be a copy the code job.

Also, the medic class was ridiculously OP. They could revive themselves after dying! Granted there was a cooldown but them being able to do this at all spells disaster and a whole new meaning to “rambo medic.” They could also throw “revive syringes” to downed players to revive themselves as well.

The latter is terribly hot news, yea!

Concern about not being able to have your tool out before getting in front of the obj seems valid.

Preselecting tools is something I mentioned a long time ago.

The PC version was in the booth. Did you not see those really bright orange cases with flames painted on them, that the controller was leading to?

(DarkangelUK) #9

It was the PC version they were playing with an xbox controller… read moar and post less please. They KNOW how to do PC controls, they’ve always said that… they used the controller to put the console crowd as ease cos we know they can do PC controls as seen in previous games.

You do tho, it’s always on hand with the use button… you don’t need to switch weapon, it’s there to use straight away.

(Jamieson) #10

Feanor said it was being played on an emulator.

(DarkangelUK) #11

Yes, an xbox emulator on the PC… right…

(f34n0r) #12

It was not the PC version, the staff confirmed it was an xbox emulator program, also, in-game there were visual prompts for the xbox buttons which would not be present in a PC version.

I will upload some pics of the screen.

(Joe999) #13

actually two. it was a ps3 emulator running on pc which itself had a 360 emulator running on emulated ps3. the whole platforming stuff is just a lie, it’s all emulated! the game’s only made for 360.

(sponge) #14

The staff I talked to confirmed it was a PC. Also, I saw the Windows desktop post-reboot and saw them load the game, splash screen and all.

Also, tons of PC games have XBox controller prompts when you plug in a 360 controller. This is not anything new.

Why do you have to resort to trolling by blatantly lying about what was said?

(jRAD) #15

It was the PC version running at Quakecon.

(f34n0r) #16

I was there man, screenshots don’t lie, I saw the game’s load screens, there were xbox load screens on it.

(DarkangelUK) #17

Btw Feanor, you are aware that SMART is also the sprint key as well right? Were you maybe looking at an objective and ‘sprinting’ towards it? I’m actually laughing at the thought now lol  ITS DOING IT FOR ME!!!

(sponge) #18

man it hurts to be so right, sometimes

(f34n0r) #19

Nope, I’m not really used to the xbox controller plus I am not a stroke victim so I am pretty aware of my body’s actions. The only button I was holding down was the use button and it SMARTed me to infinity and beyond. I have a feeling this game has already achieved sentience and views the human players as close to redundant, one button for tons of different stuff.

jRAD, if it really was the PC version, why the xbox controllers, why the xbox load screens and why on earth didn’t you let people use keyboards and mice at a PC gaming convention where every other gaming vendor was using keyboards and mice for their games? I can’t remember one other vendor who was using a console, so why would you guys use console controls for a PC game?

All the games in the Bethesda booth (Fallout New Vegas, and HUNTED) were running on XBox controllers.
