I played Brink at quakecon, some concerns

(Slade05) #21

Come on, it`s their showoff, tour de force if you will.
SD is screaming at you nonverbally WE CAN DO IT ON CONSOLES BY OURSELVES.

Cut them some slack.

Also, look at the size of the booth:

there is not enough room for 8 sets of mice/kb

Also, please note the iBuyPower tiger logos. They make PCs. These were the PCs are the Brink booth: http://www.ibuypower.com/info/chimera2-system.aspx#p=p1

Both the advantages of a smooth pc build and the practicality of a controller stand.

(AnthonyDa) #24

I like how feanor is just posting a big part of concerns already pointed out months ago…

(darthmob) #25

It’s good to see Brink helping new and special players. Nevertheless I really hope that much of the context stuff is optional.

(f34n0r) #26

Because those were xbox games? If those were PC games as well then Bethesda is in for some serious marketing problems…

But all the stuff at the Asus booth, Nvidia booth, the Humvee in the middle and the pressure tent were PCs with keyboards and mice. They could have easily put control pads and mice on those little platforms below the brink screens.

(potkettleblack) #27

I personally preferred the way it was in the PC version of ETQW.
IF you wanted to use the Hand Icon as a guide to autoswitch to the objective tool, you could. But it was optional.

Just my opinion, but weapon / item switching, is one of the skill differentiators that should still be respected. And yes I consider grenades as a weapon.

Thank you for posting your personal experience with the game, OP.

(Apples) #28

As said many times by many people, automatic stuffs are there for the new players, it sux, but it’s there… Time to stop beating a dead horse!

Dont get me wrong tho, obj tool and grenades not in a weapon bank is somehow an heresy to me, but what can you do about it?

The thing I loved about this thread is how everyone jumped on feanor about the PC vs Xbox stuff (srsly who the hell cares about that???) and no one actually answered about the smart + use key, the not selectable tool, etc etc. And I dont think he meant to be an arse by pointing out some serious flaws, but heh, time to get used to teh justice league ?

Peace

Platform(s): Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360[3]

I’m sure you know how to market games better than Bethesda though. What games have you worked on?

(DarkangelUK) #30

Apples there’s pointing out concerns, then there’s just spewing non-sense. Xbox emulator on PC? Really? Can i has that?! Also the use key has a short area of activation, certainly not ‘halfway across the map’. If drama queen calmed down and gave more realistic feedback instead of exaggerating, then maybe he’d be taken a little more seriously.

Don’t worry, JL will save you!

(niffk) #31

protip: don’t vaguely allude to yourself as being ‘skilled’ and players who might use a game mechanic that you don’t like as ‘noobs’. most people will take you and your opinions with a grain of salt.

(f34n0r) #32

I’ve played it and you haven’t? Seriously, I didn’t anything, I played this game with an open mind and I am offering feedback from someone who knows what makes a good game.

(sponge) #33

but apparently not someone who knows what the difference between a PC or a console, or knows about marketing.

also you grossly exaggerate the halfway-across-the-map that you eloquently bolded.

I came into this thread with an open mind, but now I’m not sure if you even played the game, or just watched it from the t-shirt line.

Valve regularly showed L4D on consoles or with console controllers during it’s development.

(Voxie) #35

The PC is often the preferred showcasing SKU for multi-platform games in heavy development because optimization is still a work in progress – Crytek got a crash to desktop during a live presentation of “the 360 version of Crysis 2” during E3 for instance.
The reason they were using 360 controllers (apart from the obvious marketing and approachability reasons) was stated in several interviews, namely that they wanted to show that all complex actions can easily be preformed with a gamepad.

With that covered, let’s move on to the gameplay concerns:
It was stated in a recent interview that you’d automatically be guided to objectives like healing a teammate that are out of reach by using your use key, so what you’re referring to is a feature intended to streamline gameplay. But I took for granted that you could easily cancel out of it, were you able to verify that this was the case (or could a dev please do)?

(Smooth) #36

You only get ‘pulled to’ a target while you are holding down the interact button. So releasing it will cancel it immediately. It will never be something you accidentally do whilst in a fire fight.

The distances involved are usually 4-6 meters, depending on the action. These can all be very easily tweaked by us up until release.

(Smooth) #37

PS: We love feedback, it’s always useful, so try not to be so hard on people who give it

(hideinlight) #38

Any chance to keep the ability to play with a Xbox360 controller and GUI on the pc optional. I enjoy playing with controller once in a while on PC.
Don’t want to go through all that trouble to get it to work like with UT3 where I had to write my own mutator and change config values to get it to work.

(potkettleblack) #39

While I understand where you’re coming from, I hardly feel that users of this board would dismiss someones opinion, based on their self perceived value as a gamer. Particularly when that person had first hand experience with the game, when the rest of us have not.

Doesnt mean their opinion should be taken as gospel, nor does it mean it should be completely ignored.

(Seyu) #40

I’m a bit worried about the “pull to the target” thing, hopefully it isn’t like what Feanor described it to be.
