How is Quake Wars going to deal with cheaters?

will ET:QW be using punkbuster or are we going to be riddled with cheaters and haxors?

Are we going to see punkbuster or something similar to stop these morons who cant play?

Q2: Online cheating is rapidly working its way up to be one of the biggest issues in multiplayer gaming. What steps are being taken to help ensure as cheat-free an experience as possible in Quake Wars?

As with all the latest id Software games, we’ll work with specific partners that specialize in removing the threat of cheating. We want to give server admins all the tools they need to ensure gamers have the best games they can.

Is all the info there is on anti-cheating atm as far as I know :o.

Punkbuster maybe?

(odium) #4

I hope its not punkbuster… That would ruin a good game…

(Shaderman) #5

Interesting… Why?

(jimb0) #6

The answer has ‘punkbuster’ written all over it.

Personally, I’ve never had a problem with it on all id Software games that have used it and I can’t see how I’m the only one not ‘ruined’ by it.

Interesting… Why?[/quote]

I think it’s because Punkbuster used to cause (still causes?) problems with some video drivers and there was a pretty nasty blame game going on between Even Balance and ATi/nVidia.

I never had a problem myself and hope PB is included out of the box.

Yea, I remember having that problem with the Detonators 4x.xx, that’s early 2003. Never had a problem with PB since then.

How is Quake Wars going to deal with cheaters?

Any cheaters that are caught will have their CD Key incorporated into the next patch, so that when they join a game, they will be put in a bright red sun-dress that goes over their uniform and a 10 foot wide sombrero that has flashing lights and a bull horn that goes off every 2 seconds.

In addition, a gigantic flashing Arrow will point to them with the word ‘Wanker’ on it.

(GlobalWar) #10

Lol @ Hakuryu…

Punkbuster is i think the only choice for anti cheat…as long as they stay up to date.

(Gringo) #11

And they have high heels on so they cant walk very fast and get back pain!

Pb ftw, never had any problems with it!

(corvey) #12

I hate punkbuster… It gave me problems with Quake 3 and Doom 3… I disable that crap and play on disabled PB servers… I really hope Splashdamage finds other means to discourage cheaters besides using pukebuster.

I like the bit about encoding cheaters CDkey in the next game patch release with a sundress and other special cheater feature awards. I think that’s a brilliant idea Hakuryu!

(B0rsuk) #13

Fortunately, it’s most probably punkbuster.
I never had any problem with it.

(SniperSteve) #14

I had problems with it an AA. But knowing AA im sure it was not PBs fault.

(Dazzamac) #15

I’ve been kicked off the odd server running Competition settings, but restarting ET generally worked so never had much bother with it really.

(Sauron|EFG) #16

Let’s not forget the “Valid GUID not reaching…” problem that lasted for months, and buggy updates (both server and client) that prevented everyone from playing. :moo:

I’m happy with PB the way it works today though, except for the user priviliges needed. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Black_Forky) #17

Honestly, on a windows machine almost everyone is running with admin rights. Hell, if I try to use a limited account half my proggys don’t work anyway. (You don’t need admin rights to play on linux :P)

(kamikazee) #18

It would be possible to give a user the needed privileges for a restricted account.
A “restricted account” is just a nice way to say “uses a default set of higher-security settings”. It still consists of seperate settings, so these can be overridden.

 , this quote deserves: JAHAHAA!

There were problems with 5x.xx and non-FX Nvidia cards.

Also problems with early versions of Nforce drivers for 64bit motherboards.

Conflicts with various other software (powerstrip, some spyware blockers).

RtCW punkbuster still doesn’t work with XP64.

Punkbuster kills some dialup modems, and some broadband routers can’t handle it.

Every third relese throws up false positives.

Other than that it works pretty well. :drink:
