How is Quake Wars going to deal with cheaters?

(RX|marrafakka) #21

Definately. Battleye (or whatever it was) recently caught a notorious cheater in Battlefield2, a player who had won values up to €5000 with his clan during that time. Luckily, he is out of the scene now. Anyways, Punkbuster is bad. But it’s better than nothing.

Battlefield 2 has no scene.

Also, imagine ET withoud PunkBuster? PunkBuster might not be the ultimate tool to counter cheaters but it is a tool.

did i not read somewhere they WILL be using pb? but you guys all no thisshit off by heart by now <3

(Sauron|EFG) #24

They’re not improving their track record with the new version for ET. Lag spikes once per minute and lots of people getting kicked for losing key packets. :banghead:

"9. What are you to do to stop cheaters? Are there any plans to implement Punkbuster into the game?

Among the built-in anti-cheat features, PB will also be supported."

(Isabel Lucas) #26

I’d say PB is OK, but in BF2 there’s also a lot that gets past it.

The best defence is to have a blended defensive stratedgy made up of several diferent tools / solutions, the limiting factoirs here though are going to be cost and lag issues.

(kamikazee) #27

No automation can stop cheaters, at least not without hurting regular players… Manual kick/ban will still be the best way.

PB Screenshots are highly effective but ubfortunately many admins never take them or simply aren’t around to do it.

Pity some way can’t be found to give ordinary players the ability - problem here is malicious alteration of the shots via Photoshop. If that could be avoided it would be great.

You know what I always thought was the best thing they could have done in BF2 to stop cheating? That was to make running BF Recorder compulsory on every server and to make the vids compulsory available for download for 1 week from the date of recording. That way the not only can you get any ingame footage you want for videos, but it also provides demo evidence of any cheating - so suspect a cheat, download the demo and check - makes the game more or less self policing with video evidence to back up any allegations.

I don’t know if ETQW has a demo recorder, but if it hasn’t it should have and consideration should be given to the above.

GameArena: With the focus on Quake Wars being primarily a multiplayer product, one of the biggest issues in online gaming and one we continually struggle with is cheating online. Have you guys got any plans for what you’re doing in that area, or is that still TBD?

PW: Well, it is early because we’re at alpha at the moment, but we have a design for an anti-exploit system - there’s a pretty comprehensive reward system that we’re trying to put into the game. id Software have worked with companies like PunkBuster for a long time, so there are considerations in that direction as well.

There are two directions, which is you have the risk of someone doing something external like wrapper DLLs, hacks and exploits - aimbots - things that just watch the display and point at things. That’s controlled by external company services and a certain amount of “we can’t tell you why”-internal stuff.

I have never had any problem with punkbuster in my games i have an Ati card. But i find that PB acts a more of a deterent than anything i know at the minute i mostly play cod2 and the amount of cheaters i see in that man its awfull. Something new needs to be put built in with the game to stop any tampering of the files to join servers. And if any mods want to be put into a game they must be submitted to the maker or sumthin lol given a seal of approval. if thats possible lol

(senator) #31

Nominated as: sentence of the week with the most inappropriate usage of the phrase ‘lol’.

ROFL I say, rofl!

(ToonarmY) #32

i put them in ther because i know little about modding wasnt sure if what i was talking about was laughable nonsense.

as it happens i had a couple of laughs whillst typing that

oh edit i forgot to add this

lol

(senator) #33

hehe, well, don’t take it personal, it’s just a bit annoying to see some ppl using lol or rofl or similar phrases in at least every second sentence, for no reason at all, some even use lol as a real word, for example in teamspeak… frightening, really

We all might have our bad habbits  , I myself am a smily addict  , I could use those cuddly little icons as an enhancement of almost every sentence :moo: , but I dont :eek3: , because … :???: , well, I pull myself together and by sheer willpower say ‘NO’ to my addiction  :chef: You can do it, too, trust me   , it’s easy!

:bump:  :drink:

(ToonarmY) #34

lol i know what you mean my m8 punched a lad in the face for using lol in real life

people can be killed for that sorta thing nowadays

(Wils) #35

Has he considered anger management classes?

(Gringo) #36

Or suicide cuz he obviously dont bring too much to the world!

Hi:

One of the best ways to avoid cheaters is to register game, cdkey, login at server.

If they cheat many times, not only one, to avoid mistakes marking him as a cheater, really demonstrated with videos, etc. The cheater has to be MARKED or TAGGED in gameplay, because at server is stored in his account he is a cheater and who said he was cheating and where and how. You can review that data (perhaps store the gameplay-demo to all people can see how he was cheating).

One of the things makes easy to cheat is being anonymous at internet, you can change ip, spoof mac addres, etc. and get un banned. And now there are some tools to do hardware spoof to avoid punkbuster hardware ban.
I think we have to leave punkbuster and get into account related protection with real data when possible, here we can store our statistics (and choose if others can see our statistics). And store some demo-play of us, store our global ranking, etc.
Perhaps has to be a entire network of servers, because i dont want to pay each month to store my data, but i think an account with 20 or 30 megs to store basic data, has to be given by software enterprise, when we buy the game.
What we-you win with that ?? you can so statistics usage about maps, machine domination, character domination, etc. and adjust gameplay to do it MORE BALANCED AS POSSIBLE !!! in the next patches-releases.

You win, better game adjustments to avoid character or machine dominations,
and we win, avoiding cheaters and in getting better game experience.
We can show our friends the good players we are, showing our server statistics stored at main server.

Thats all friends.

(kamikazee) #38

You don’t want to pay for the servers, but you want to see the stats regardless of that? Sounds like a problem to me…
And what happens to cheater’s accounts? Just add “cheated on <date> with <hack>” to his log and do nothing more about it?

Using the stats for an overview in machines/characters/etc could do, but it shouldn’t result in massive patching. Imo, the less patches, the better. There will be bugs and imperfections, but change the game too often and a lot of players will call “nerfed!”.
But most of all: I don’t want my friends to show them how good they are in percent. If they want to show it, then we should play a few games.

(Morix) #39

Manual Kick/ban hurting good playlers…

(kamikazee) #40

That depends on the admin running the server. An automated system doesn’t as it would be the same basics for all servers.
