How good can people get?

(TNCK) #1

How good is it reasonably possible to be at ET? I consider myself a pretty good player (around 38% accuracy and 1:1 headshot/kill ratio), but I was playing on a server the other day and was watching some guy murder everyone around him. When I looked at his stats, he was shooting an awe inspiring 44.8% accuracy and had 52 headshots and 38 kills with the thompson.

He was obviously a very good player who had done some serious tweaking to his config.

My question is: How many people are this good, and are there people better than this?

Discuss amongst yourselves
:drink:

Edit: I’m pretty certain that he wasn’t cheating, and I don’t want to start another thread about that… I was just wondering how many people are that good? Or what would be a reasonable level of greatness to aspire to?

(Roeligan) #2

hmmm i can feel the “he must be cheating” “im a 1337 frag0r that will 0wnorz his @ss” reply’s comming this way…

Myself i’m pretty good in teamplay, my personal skills however tend to be on the low side… will work on that…

First part I agree with, the second however doesn’t necessarily follow. You can’t “tweak your config”, seriously or otherwise, and magically acquire skills you don’t already have.

I was reviewing some PB screenshots this morning and I was looking at some taken from a player I know to be very, very good (much, much better than me). I was surprised to discover that his config was actually considerably less tweaked than mine.

(TNCK) #4

Watching his use of spawn selection scripts, reload announcements, class selection scripts, binds for annoying chat spam/gloating, and spawn timers etc. It was obvious that he had done some work on his config.

Also, after spectating him for a while, I also know he was able to pick people out of the background better than I think anybody would be able to do with a standard config. I have played with a tweaked config in the past, so I know what kind of difference it makes when it comes to spotting threats etc. From watching him play, and the fact that he has obviously put some time into his config, it appeared logical to me that he had tweaked his video settings.

I could be wrong, but that was just the impression I got.

Tweaked configs definitely help. Using things such as gamma, mapoverbrightbits, etc, I can not only see things farther, but they stand out against the background better (all within legal PB & league settings, of course).

But, it can only help your accuracy if it’s helping your FPS. You’ll hit things easier with an FPS of 76 over 30 any day.

And, I’m not as good as the guy you saw :stuck_out_tongue: I average 34-38% accuracy, and get at least one headshot per kill.

(Kendle) #6

I’ve done a lot of work on my config (no reload announcements or taunts however) and I think you’ll find most Clan players have as well, but my point is skill and tweaking are not directly related. The fact that he takes the game seriously enough, and presumably plays often enough, to warrant tweaking his config is probably more of a contributory factor than the fact his config is tweaked in the first place.

I know with my config I can see better than I could with a default config, but I still can’t hit anything cos my aim is still crap. The only difference a tweaked config makes for me is I can now see what I’m not hitting! :bash:

(The_Jesus_Zeppelin) #7

well, i know there are some really good players out there, and i know for a fact that most of the time AMD plays on basically default settings and configs. and even without all the tweaking like we have on our home computers one of our members AMD|Zanhorn averages about 50% accuracy with thomson and mp40 and does reasonably well with heavy weapons. but when we get home and get to use default settings he avges about 55% acc. so its not always your settings and config. its ussually just how good the person is, and how well they can ACTUALLY shoot, and not how well their comps are configed.

(ETplayer) #8

its not always the pc ur talking about, ur talking about skill here 2…

if u know the sweet spots of every stage for easy kills etc, its easy going…

oh, and always aim for the head… { u got an automatic gun so why shoot the body, some bullets are bound 2 hit his head, wich is much more damage then boddy damage}

Once u got the feeling for headshots, well then ur ready 2 play matches with the big boys. :drink:

@Kendle

I understand that the config has almost nothing to do with his skill aiming. I was just saying that he appeared to be able to easily see people that I had trouble seeing with my settings.

Ultimately it all comes down to how well you can aim with the mouse in your hand.

You forget that there are people playing ET who have been practicing aiming since the first days of Q3 back in 1999. People spend hours and hours and …screw hours…I mean months and months just practicing so they can become ridiculously good. I’ve played with super good people too and they make me so mad cause they’re just impossible to kill.

The only consolidation i find for myself for being beaten time and time again is that I only play this game for fun, and to relax now and then. I can’t believe some losers spend such ridiculous amounts of time practicing for something that’s not really all that significant. Sure there are tournaments and prizes and stuff, but is it really worth to play a game for 5 hours a day for 1 year strait, in a manner which I think makes the game less enjoyable, just to win a video card…whatever. I guess just like other sports it can be fun if you become the best there is. I don’t care about being the best though. I’m playing this game now, once i drain the fun out of this I’ll move on. Which is also one of the reasons I don’t care for clans much.

ive got all the map over bright and just cause hes got a lotts say_team binds that he spams dont mean he is good, 52 headshots is good, but it all depends on how long the game lasts and what class he is etc, my highest headshot kills was 65, im gonna try and beat that then take a screenie  but yea he sounded like a good player, but no-one can be TOOO good

Holding that kind of standard is marking a really good aimer or a cheater, but lets not discuss the cheaters since they have been talked about to death. I usually have an aim of 28-38% accuracy depending on time and map, with HS between 80-90% of total kills, usually not over that though it happens. This is on pubs, lower stats in clan games, just beacuse the oponents are usually a lot better. The things that goes into having a good aim is usally three things; 1) A good stable fps, if you can get 76 stable then great. 2) Tweaked mouse sensitivity, if you have to high sensitivity you aim all over the place and move it to fast, to slow and you cant react in time and move with the oponent. 3) A good mouse mat, with just a nice clean movement with the right friction. Also to be prepared to spots usually camped/defended will help raising the aim. Besides these points, practice, practice, practice.

How many that have this kind of super aim is hard to tell but the younger you are the better the aim you can develop. I usually rule on pubs but it feels like I’m average in clan games (depending on oponent of course) so I guess there’s quite a few really good players around. But I do think that if you see players around that constantly have an acc around 40-45%+ on a pub you might need to start questioning there aim or at least what makes them get that kind of aim. Of course if the players on the server really sucks don’t mind, because everyone can have a great aim against players that don’t move/shoot properly.

There’s a misconception here about what a good ET player is. Good aim helps but it certainly not everything. There are plenty of Q3 veterans that play ET and have aim better than an aimbot but they can do shit else in the game. You usually see them as rambo medics. I find them especially annoying because they rarely do anything to help the team but just go around trying to frag people so they can get the highest fragger award. In ET having good aim is not everything. I’ll take a good engineer over an exellent shooter anyday.

(Lanz) #15

We all know that you need to be a team player, that’s not the point of this discussion. Trust me, after several years in rtcw and et clans I do know what it takes to win a clan match.

(@lewares) #16

You know… playing Half Life: Counterstrike can help you aim. If you know 3 shots will kill you, you’ll be more aware and hit more often. I used to suck, but now I have CS and kill more people every life.

Ya i have seen people be in very tight spots surounded by many players and gotten out of it! I for one am a very good player i get on average up to anywere from 40 to 47% accuracy in ET and i get Majot almost all the time i play ET. But i have some tweaks oon my comp and configs that help me see further and alow me to have better accuracy. But some how i alwas find players that are alitlle better than me and they have less tweaks and configs than me. I Play ET at least for 2 hours every other day Just by practicing with my Clan <SS>(Stealth Soldier) we come more skilled every day and get closer and closer to getting Second Lut in one game of 15 min.

But I have some tweaks on my comp and configs that help me see further and allow me to have better accuracy. But some how I always find players that are little better than me and they have less tweaks and configs than me. I Play ET at least for 2 hours every other day. Just by practicing with my Clan <SS>(Stealth Soldier) we come more skilled every day and get closer and closer to getting Second Lut in one game of 15 min. SO I think that the guy just plays ET every day and has a lot of skill and a very remade or custom built comp that can handle up to higher than 70 or 80 FPS.

(L2|B4tt3rY) #20

i can EASILY get between 40-50 percent acc on a noob pub server, ones there the opponents dont try and make themselves hard to hit and just run straight into u, 58 headshots or watever is nice, but not that hard on the right server
