How come so many RTCW players didn't like ET?

(Cerebrate) #1

Maybe it’s inappropriate to post this on this forum, but I’ll give it a shot.

I didn’t try RTCW MP till after I’ve played ET, so I was never a part of that scene, but I occationally see people who say they didn’t like ET, but loved RTCW. Apart from the fact that ET shortened RTCW’s lifespan, what was better about the old game?

  • I can see that the XP idea wasn’t the greatest.
  • RTCW was faster; you moved quicker and and the firing rate was higher on the SMGs.

That’s all I can think of, really.

(BondyBoy007) #2

RTCW had smaller maps that were offensively biased which made for exciting close games

I never had a problem with ET after playing RTCW MP to death, but there were some die hards at the start who hated it and took every opportunity to slag ET off - some of these are now playing ET competitivly

Fuddy duddys set in thier ways.

I bet £100 somebody claims that Doom 3 isn’t as good as Doom 1.

(Cerebrate) #4

I suspected as much. :blah:

(Vaibhav) #5

Wat happned to Doom 2???

(Cerebrate) #6

What about it? When most people talk about Doom they mean Doom 2, I think. It was better than the original.

(faltytower) #7

Well, I wouldn’t say better, just issues with certain aspects of ET.

[ul]
[li] Encouragement of SPAM.
[/li][li] RtCW was very Arcade-Centric (i.e., shorter map time, longer respawn, fast pace, and an overall “cartoon” design–simple and big). ET is console-ish.
[/li][li] Nerfing of the sniper rifle and SMG to the point they’re nearly identical (in case of the rifles, weak).
[/li][li] ET’s XP and promotion system encourage whoring. spamming.
[/li][li] Elimination of the Venom in favor of a realistic weapon.
[/li][li] Limiting LT weapon selection.
[/li][li] Class-specific weapons (Eng, C-Ops)
[/li][li] Bland graphic design (e.g., Main menu, hud, models, skin, fonts). (EDIT: in defense of the HUD, the design is a homage to Wolf-3D).
[/li][li] Removing RtCW’s “cool” sounds.
[/li][li] Replacing RtCW’s player characters with a bunch of old guys, with Axis being the uglier of the two (though if looked closely, one will notice the Allied Soldier and LT are RtCW’s Med/Solider, Lt/Eng).
[/li][li] Not enough maps.
[/li][li] Rise of the Rambo Medic and Freshmeat Engineer.
[/li][li] ET’s buggy game code.
[/li][li] Expliotation (airstrike in the Goldroom, Engy XP trick, akimbo-fire rate, pr0ne hitbox).
[/li][/ul]

I enjoy both, but prefer ET more, because of the weapon balance and “expansion” of RtCW’s gameplay. Keep-in-mind, a lot of issues with ET weren’t addressed until there were mod support, namely ETPro and shrubET.

(Vaibhav) #8

Was a freshmeat Eng??

Was a Engy XP trick??

(faltytower) #9

Just another way of saying Engineers are the most targeted class in ET and therefore die alot.

Before the release of patch 1.02 many ppl on pub-server who played Engineer used a trick to earn their Engineer XP and that was by arming dynamites near an objective trigger box and then defusing it within that box. So for a long strecth of time, one would repeatedly hear :Dynamite Defused:. It got worse with 2 or more ppl. Good times though .

I don’t know… I still play RtCW and ET… I think they’re both seperately great games… though for some reason I’ve noticed I have 10% better acc in shrub than in etpro (in ET) so… I’m not too thrilled with some aspects of ETpro so I’ve been playin OSP/SHRUB rtcw more often then I’ve been playin ET.

(Cerebrate) #11

You mean it’s 23% instead of 13%

(CM..Punk) #12

My accuracy improved since using ETPro, because of the hit sounds. I didn’t even try for headshots before, now I get them quite often. Also helps for picking off snipers from miles away with the smg, didn’t think that was even worth shooting for but now you can just fire away listening out for the sounds. Also makes you notice how much of an advantage crouching has, I couch before every shot now. Good for shooting through smoke too. Audiable guides rock

(Cerebrate) #13

Yes, the game changed after the implementation of hitsounds. When you hear two headshots in a row, you can play it safe by aiming lower.

(DG) #14

because ET isnt RTCW with new maps. Even if it was, most rtcw’ers dont even like the additional rtcw maps, with the sole exception of mp_ice.

there’s no pleasing everybody, and et is handy for blaming the death of rtcw on. rtcw people ranting about ET are quite useful - reminds me why i left rtcw.

(FireFly) #15

Just wondering…by now it’s damn obvoius that there won’t be any new officail maps for ET.
again just wondering: If ET wasn’t a free game, would they (ID, Aktivision) release a bunch of new maps, just like they did with the GOTY-mappack for RTCW ?

(Cerebrate) #16

I’m pretty sure they would.

(amazinglarry) #17

You mean it’s 23% instead of 13%

HAHAHAH!!! Hilarious stuff. Seriously though, I mean 40% avg to 30%… I’m still getting 40% in RtCW and etc in pure servers on ET… but literally 10% less on ETpro… so obviously something was done and it’s a little annoying.

I liked et for its new weapons and its movable items(tanks, trucks);

ET however was made for pubbing and favored the less than ‘133t’ group of players

I didnt like the xp system… should have made an option to turn it off
the xp system gave medics ( the major class in rtcw) a bigger boost by giving them full revive, adrenaline, and extra health upto 150+ health after level 3 battlesense. They were a hard force to stop in rtcw with 140 against a 120 FO/Eng/soldier butyou still could stop a group of medic pushing… in ET with all those added bonuses to the med class and the nerfing of the weapons that could stop them ie sniperifles and panzers have made the medic class very tough to beat if in a group… the only way to combat that is to have a group of medics yourself.

the SMG’s: because of the implementation of a working antilag system I can see why slowing down the smg’s were a good thing… but in et they became too slow. and because there is no difference between them… it makes the game rather bland. Choices between different smg’s is a good thing. different pros and cons of each was what made rtcw’s mp40/thompson choice a good thing

Panzer: RTCW panzer while having a bigger splash radius was a precision weapon meant for massive kills but took the whole bar to beable to fire again…this left the player very open to attack so he needed to make sure his shots were worth it… The et panzer has a smaller radius… but after level 1 gets to fire it in a shorter time… the ET Panzer has become less of a percision weapon and more of a " shoot where ever you feel like it… you can always fire again is 4 seconds
" type of weapon

and the maps: maps created for pub play… long and very very defensive on most. not good for competion… and most fps eventually have competions surounding them… the software designers and map makers need to reconize this as well… pub and competion options need to be there

Like it or not, it’s obvious that RtCW is a much more higher skill component in its gameplay compared to ET.

Yesterday, when I was playing RtCW on PC Chubby_Bunny, (although it’s shrub, good players frequent that server. NARF players in particular…), a guy was commenting how different RtCW was compared to ET (this being his first time playing RtCW)…

I think the Rambo Medic was a lot less existent in RtCW for the follow reasons:

  • the HP difference was generally negilible cuz of the higher firing rates. the first shot was far more important than just 15 more HP
  • the regeneration was less of a factor cuz gunfights in RtCW were much shorter, therefore, you can only regenerate 10 HP max before the fight was over
  • you can’t run in firefights in RtCW. You turn your back, you die. simple as that. in ET, it’s pretty easy to run away and feed yourself med packs.
  • much harder get ammo in RtCW. I think the Ammo Racks in ET are bad for gameplay

I think spam is much more prevalent in ET for these reasons:

  • Artillery suddenly has become the support fire of choice in ET. And for good reason, cuz it’s usually better. But in RtCW, the Airstrike used 50% of the bar while Artillery used 100%. But as mentioned above, ammo is harder to come by, so Airstrike became the support fire of choice as giving ammo was almost essential team victory. And Airstrikes do require more skill to use
*More nades. I think the Fd Op and Medic having a 2 grenade capactiy really is a big difference
*need to hand out less ammo. Mega Ammo packs totally own. (plus the ammo racks)

And I totally agree that ET turned the panzer more into a one person, one kill weapon. Instead of a mass killing machine in RtCW.

Decisions really MATTERED in RtCW. You fire that panzer now, you won’t fire it again for 30 seconds. You call that Arty now, you can’t call another for 30 seconds or hand out 1 ammo pack for 7 seconds. When someone falls in combat, you don’t go instinctly to revive them. In RtCW, using those two seconds to revive someone in a middle of a gun fight can easily mean death.

In ET, you can fire that panzer knowing you have another shot up your sleeve in the next 10 seconds. I’ll call that arty on their spawn point. Whoops! they just repaired the tank! Luckily I can throw an airstrike over it 5 seconds later.

The SMG’s in ET are far too versatile. They really have no serious weakness. You can do some amazing things with them. But about a choice of SMG’s, I dunno about that. 75% of ppl in RtCW seem to prefer the MP40 over the Thompson.

Oh, it seems ppl get higher percentages in RtCW than in ET, despite it’s obvious ET’s SMG’s have a much smaller spread. Well, I find that in RtCW, you do far more close combat fighting than in ET. It’s hard to break the 33% barrier in ET. But most people don’t have too much problems breaking 40% on mp_beach.

(L2|B4tt3rY) #20

lol its quite obvious u havnt been playing competitive ET at all ^^

get into a decent clan and play other decent clans, health/ammo racks are even used to an advantage in scrims its not there so u can spam nades etc

and there are landmines and rifle nades etc in ET because the maps are sooo big

if they made another ET i would be very happy its teh win, i just wish for smaller maps so i can get better fps, it seems that in ET u need a pr0 pc to get a steady 76 :frowning: oh yeah and another thing MAKE SURE THEy include HITSOUNDS!!!
