Thank you badman for this information, it solves quite a lot of things about etqw rights and owners.
Help us Splash damage you our only hope.
ETQW isn’t a that dificult game to learn how to play it. it’s true that COD and BF players have been playing easy controls on those games and if you make a small change they won’t be able to walk again. i can see two big issues that might be problematic when the src code is released. The 1st issue would be the setup of a master server to run without demonware api, the 2nd would be cd key issue and that would require legal advice from zenimax, i mean if Zenimax wants to release the game under their publisher, Bethesda, they will have to kinda make an exchange of CD keys. but the 2nd issue is very improbable.
Maybe not difficult, but had an overwhelming depth.
When I take a look at the beginners I supported, the problem wasn’t more the shooting it was more about gameplay understanding and knowledge about what’s going on.
Another small example: Join a pub server and look how many people strafe there. 5 years passed and they still haven’t figured this out yet. Do you see?
No idea what you try to say with this sentence.
Yeah, can be nice sometimes. But in case of the Wolf: MP it was a pure waste of time. No one ever played this mod, because I think the idea was just very bad to turn QW into ET, or bring ET into QW, or even mix it. Why would QW players want the Stroggs to get removed and those WW2 weapons? And ET players don’t like QW at all, neither the big maps. Did it even offer new things? I think we only talk about models here.
The only useful thing I see, with the source code being released, would be really a new patch with certain bug fixes and maybe even a look at the netcode.
Bug fixes, patches and good netcode are overrated. No one needs it! Complete waste of time! Game is dead! Source release will make things worse! Now move along! … I’m being sarcastic
Of course it’s a waste of time as well. But still better than a mod no one ever plays.
I’m afraid with releasing the source code won’t do much aswell with making it free.
It’s not just making it free and your done. You need to release a fully up-to-date game (1.5). Remove PB (outdated, not supported) and the cdkey check?
The other problem is when the game become popular it will be killed by cheaters without AC.
Idk, but when you modify the game for example to fix some bugs are you still be able to connect to the servers?
No one played it because it’s not even released yet…
Your post is so full of misinformation and generalisations I almost got cancer.

So by your logic because someone cannot strafe in the game The game should never be made available.
Seriously!
Rex even you were a noob at one stage. #Rex is scared of noobs
Maybe your scared of noobs come on tonight, this noob will kick your ass up and down the map.
One of the pluses in this game is the discovery of play, like classes and learning to play each class or vehicles. That’s why people come back to the game. Its not any different to pick up games like Planetside 2 or Tribes Etc. if people want to improve to the next level there is many good guides on the forums and many guys who play the game that can help players.Same applies to strafing.
Besides new players there are many existing old players that cannot play the game because they dont have disks.i get steam pings from guys asking were they can buy or get a copy of the software quite a lot.
Back to the subject in hand. If the open source is released its a good opportunity to do somthing with the game. How things might turn out until it happens you cannot predict .Which is miles better than having nothing. If you see what happened with Wolf:ET the modders, programmers have done a excellent job keeping that game afloat. We are lucky to have a lot of dedicated people that are good with code these guys will get things sorted i am sure of it.
once the open source arrives however you want to look at it. its a good progression.

No, I think you understood me wrong. The strafing was just an example how difficult the game can be for beginners, as I only quoted Setlec.
Has nothing to do with the source code publishing obviously.

No i got you. I said the game is not any difficult then any other recent FPS game.
So because ETQW has a richer deeper content, it’s impossible to attract people with a source release, because…what, exactly?. I get the part that the game is light years old…but the rest…erhm? You should support this! And an assets release! Unless you are scared of being topled of the throne! The king is worried that his seize of power will be challenged, so he is trying to keep us down. Forward, attack!
According to Badman, we know where to turn our grief. Perhaps we should start a seperate source + assets release signature gathering, instead of in-fighting…?
ads, if you wanna save etqw, come play custom maps on sunday Nirvana. Everything else is just populism
I already asked him(and he refused). I also think popularizing custom maps is the only way to keep qw alive
Never said this.
I do! I play custom maps every Sunday.
Nah, take my crown Runeforce, it’s yours!
I play another game so I don’t really care anymore.
But you said any other fps! Oh and by the way I also own BF3 and I must say it’s a very skilled game!
Now I forgot about what I’m discussing here?
Now now, you yourself eventually managed to attain a passable level of skill, so I’m certain it’s within the grasp of the ordinary man
Jokes aside. Even if the game can’t be retrofitted to a FreeToPlay model or find its way back on the shelves in its current state, I still think Quake Wars is a game worth saving – it just does so many things right. More people should have the opportunity to give it a go.
Happy to hear Activision relinquished the distribution rights, as I think ZeniMax might be more likely to give an old game a crutch to stand on.
Time will tell…
dealing with cheaters has become a problem. any guy can create a new account and troll around with aimbot or wallhack. he will eventually get caught. but only after many games were ruinned, and many administrators losing their time watching demos.
smurfs, are not such a big problem. but when you are talking about good players, the game gets ruinned too. you never know if you are about to get an easy/average/impossible game. most usually, when a good player uses an unknown nick, he gets accused of cheating. and then, the same problem you had with cheaters, admins have to spec, watch demos, check yawn, etc …
my idea would be to create a server with stardard configuration (like ranked server) but only allow people with high ranks (supreme comander or something like it). dont know if this restriction can be automated (my guess is that it cant). but maybe admins in server can enforce this rule (with kicks or bans, if people keep insisting).
above is a copy of something i sugested some time ago, for secondary villa server. the idea was suposed to create a server free of cheaters, trolls, smurfs, etc… adding to this, it would remove top players from regular servers (just guessing here), hoping beginers would have a better time playing against other beginers.
PS: related to another issue: i got another reputation remark after posting this. why ? because “rex” is jealous of my “red star” probably.
