I played ET over the summer all the time, and there were lots of people playing it. I just installed it again and can only load like 40 servers on the list with no filters on. Am i missing something? Or have people just stopped playing ET?
Has ET died?
You need the 1.02 patch.

I had the same feeling a little while ago, Venom (check my thread “What’s Cooking” somewhere further down the page). I hadn’t played since somewhere before the holidays and decided to start the game up recently, only to find it didn’tgrab me much anymore and that my favorite servers were empty. I’m gonna install ET again I think but it was kinda sad to see the regulars I always played with (on rtcw.co.uk) gone and the server almost deserted. I don’t know you if visited any server regularly and played with virtually the same people every time, but I can tell you it’s one heck of an experience. Good times
well… ET dont looks dead 2 me… hell looks like more ppl are playing then be4… :eek2:
It will have to die sooner or later, with Doom3 games in the works and all that. Same way text based MMORPG took a real beating with the advent of widespread broadband (lost many players to real time graphics based games ala ET). But just as MMORPGs are still around, ET will also be around for a long time to come.
P.S
I dont think ET has died yet.
Weeell, Doom3, hmmm, maybe it depends a little on the theme as well, at least I’d prefer the realistic approach in ET rather than the fantasy approach in Doom, and wouldn’t see Doom as any alternative to ET
Am i wrong in thinking that doom3 will only have a 4 player multiplayer part?
Im sure i read something recently about it.
Doom 3 only has 4 player deathmatch. No Co-op. But John Carmack himself said that it will only take a simple mod to change these parameters.
One thng that could happen that would please us all is to hear of Splash Damage converting ET to the Doom3 engine and adding a few extra stuff.but shit what do i know.

He said Doom3 games, as in ones using that engine. I’m sure nobody expects vanilla D3 to be a huge multiplayer hit, what with only 4 ppl at a time.

No Co-op for PC users. Xbox users get co-op, just we don’t. I guess the Xbox has much greater capabilities than a modern PC…
CM…Punk
ID know some one will add it in a mod, they probably think becuse of the XBox’s limited capability that they should get sommat extra
I think it’s more like the guys making the xbox port have absolutely nothing to do once they ported the engine itself, so instead of sitting around twiddling their thumbs they’re adding coop.
Seeing as Spoof has probably answered the original posters question, my 2 cents worth on the question “Is ET dying?”
I started playing RTCW in April '02 and joined the www.rtcw.co.uk forums at about the same time. RTCW was released in Sept '01 (I believe) and so I joined when it was 7 months old. Within weeks I’d seen the first “RTCW is dying” thread. I remember it cos my response was “bloody hope not, I’ve only just started playing!”.
ET is now what, 10 months old? And I’ve yet to see a “ET is dying” thread on any forum. So far, so good.
However, this weekend the top 2 Clans in the UK gave up ET. Not that a couple of Clans giving up is worrying per se, but it’s the reasons they gave up that I’m a little concerned about. Both claim the lack of good competition maps, and the inbalance of the ones that are played, have put them off ET. Playing games lasting 2 - 3 hours for a 0 - 0 draw (double full-holds all round) is no fun. As teams get better, and defensive strategies become more refined, the standard maps, most of which started out defensively biased, are becoming even more defensively biased.
My concern is that ET, having never been designed with Clan play in mind (IMO) in the first place, is in danger of losing support in the Clan community unless new, balanced, small(-ish) competition maps are developed. That would indeed be a shame, as the ET Clan community (certainly in the UK) is much more receptive to custom maps than RTCW was (SupplyDepot being a perfect example (albeit probably the only example) of a good custom competition map).
Once the Clans start disappearing then the game could be said to be dying. The reason I say this (and I’ve said it before and been flamed for it) is that most servers out there are either Clan servers open to the public, or servers provided by hosting companies whose business is renting servers to Clans (who are obviously not going to provide public servers for games that the Clans (their customers) are not playing).
I sincerely hope this doesn’t happen of course, as I can honestly say I’ve had more fun playing ET Clan wars than I did RTCW, but I fear the time is approaching when the future of ET will be decided. Hopefully ET-TV and the inclusion of ET at QuakeCon will have a big say in this and a few good custom maps would be a big help also (and not 32+ player epics either, but small, balanced, competition maps).
Kendle copied me. What he said. :]
Painkiller MP is basically made for Comps afaik and heard. Cant comment what i’ve played cause post will be removed.
Good post there. I agree about the maps, the ET community is crying out for more of them. As you mentioned, not just any old maps - decent, compact and nicely balanced. My personal opinion is that the the game has an awful lot of life left in it. I think if ET hadnt come out then we would all most probably still be playing RTCW ( I know I would!!). I dont think any other online game captures ET’s gameplay any near aswell. The quakes/ UT’s of this world are very fast and furious (too fast for somes taste) but obviously fantasy - and out of the WWII shooters ET still looks and plays the best without being either ultra realistic or being too unrealistic.
So I think the call out there is for the talented bunch of map makers out there to create more compact maps with 10-15 minute timelimits - along the lines of radar and the old maps like beach, base and assualt. Even RTCW maps like village (which wasnt tiny itself) only had 8 minute timelimits…
Do us proud - keep the game going!!
there are always ppl that r saying games r dying… look at CS ive read over 20 threads on diffrent forums (3 or 4) saying CS was dying… Well Cs is still 1 of the most played online games!
Dont worry about a game dying when it was succesfull in the past… yeah it might be played less but there will always b ppl playing it (4 example ME… i love ET and i discust fps with vehicles in it such as battlefied (wich r the total trend atm) and my PC is not powerfull enough to run doom3 or half-life 2)
I do agree on the map thing… Some maps r ballanced like shit!.. though it is not like every match ends up 0 - 0 --> skill is a factor not that if ur axis u always win
(btw some of the new games’s mp r really shit like far cry!)
COD is made for Comps, small maps, lots of them (12 (yes 12!) standard maps) and simplistic (CS-like) gameplay. Trouble is there are no Classes, no respawn and publics are crap. I’ll stick with ET until another Class based team game comes along, personally, but I think it still needs work to prolong it’s life. And of course it will never “die” completely as they’ll always be someone, somewhere, playing it. But there will come a time when it falls below the critical mass needed to be viable.
great post kendle :drink:
i couldn’t agree more … i had similar thoughts when i read about the demise of VOID & royal
personally, i think we need to get better ties between map makers and clans. There are some very talanted map makers out there who are making some great maps. unfortunately, a large number of maps being made are huge sprawling maps that are more suited to public play with 32 players cringe … but very few good maps for competition play
i suggest a couple of things:
1/ we contact other leagues (in the US, New Zealand, Australia and so on) and look at what (if any) custom maps are being used.
2/ we talk to some of the more dedicated/talented map makers about creating some maps specifically for clan play. Maybe have them spectate some clan matches and have some experienced clans work with them in map design/testing to ensure the important things are included
3/ we locate the maker of Supply Depot, kidnap him, and force him to make 10 more good competition maps
either way, i don’t want to see ET die out anytime soon
and ultimately the lifespan of cometitive ET scene is dependant on the community. If we all try to contribute to the growth of ET then we can keep the scene alive for a long time to come
ET > all other online games
