I started playing CoD a few days ago and already loving it. Not as much as ET but its still an enjoyable game (running about DM servers shooting everything for aim praccy = fun (even more so with the cs random headshot factor and no crosshairs \o/)) yet imo it aint made for Comps. The maps, 12 of em, are simply there SP ones that they had to make anyway, they shouldve made MP only maps⌠(maybe they have but afaik theres only 2 with patches? 1 upcoming?)
But this is an ET forum about an ET is dying thread⌠low and behold.
SupplyDepot was made by Ginc (God Incarnate) of 20ID (20 Inch Dongs (now thereâs a Clan name)). I believe he plays mostly BF1942 now and isnât particularly interested in making ET maps.
afaik TWL have used Caen (OK but needs Allied spawn time increasing or else it becomes another Fueldump (albeit Allied bias instead of axis)) and Iâve heard good things about a competition version of Venice but have yet to play it myself. The UnterElite Tourney (which Iâm involved in) will be using 2 custom maps. SupplyDepot will be 1, we havenât decided yet what the other will be.
Speaking of that Kendle, wouldnât it be possible to make the stock maps more suitable for SW with a little tweaking, or would they get too random with a bigger diff in spawn times?
In RtCW there were some really nice efforts (imho) to make comp maps, but for some reason they werenât really played i comps. However, since SW was more common on public servers some of them still got played by people like myself. Maybe mappers hesitate to make maps for competitions since they know that if the leagues/clans doesnât like it it wonât even be playable on the ânormalâ campaign server?
If a mapper makes a map specifically for competition but nobody wants to play it, itâs prolly because the map just sucks.
All good competition maps make good public campaign maps, besides perhaps on those 32+ players servers, but who plays there anyway (a lot of mappers if you ask me )
Right now every mapper seems to want to make those big, impressive maps with lots of fps-eating stuff and more objectives then you can count. How many of those really get played a lot on pubs? Just temple and venice AFAIK.

Uh, no. Several good maps were developed in cooperation with leagues and/or clans, but people were either too lazy to learn strats for the maps or provide the mapper with some constructive feedback. (Hummerâs Infamy is one example.)
Frankly Temple, Caen and Supply are the only good custom maps everâŚResurrection too maybe. The rest plain didnt plan out a strategyâŚthey were justâŚlets make it bigâŚand let people run around shooting each other. Venice is an example. The original maps had a LOT of thought put in them imo. There are so many places it takes exact-ttt-ly 10 seconds to run from and toâŚso many situations where it paysâŚnot 100% necessaryâŚbut definitely pays to have a mix of classes running around, a bunch of good camping spots and doorways (doorways and such make it hard for defenders to âhug the wall and run backwardsâ for max protection) and finally multiple intersection points for a lot of unpredictable action. Brilliant stuff if you look at them deeply!
TWL used adjusted spawn times for Railgun I believe, and I remember suggesting the same for Fueldump before most leagues just simply dropped it. Increasing defending team spawn times can help, but some standard maps are just too bad to be really useable (like Fueldump for example). The sad (for Clans) fact is that ET was made for 30 minute rounds and Campaign style play. In that respect itâs a great game, but that format just doesnât work for Clan wars. We need maps that are biased to the attacking team, if any, so that (decent) times are set.
Iâd like to think the ET community is considerably less hostile to custom maps than RTCW was. Certainly as an ex-RTCW player I can see that the refusal to accept custom maps was a contributory factor in itâs demise (as I think a lot of ex-RTCW players do). I think if mappers produce maps that play well (as opposed to concentrating on how they look), theyâd find a more willing audience in ET than they would have in RTCW. SupplyDepot, for example, looks âtackyâ, but it plays superbly well and most Clans I know love it.
My Clan leader raves about the competition version of Venice. I donât suppose anyone knows of any (UK/Euro) servers playing it?
I am speaking now as a mapper. I think this is my first post here at general side.
I think that all map makers should have a âprofessionalâ clan to test the custom maps. I have done coperation with the **** Storm clan and they have been very helpful and they tend to put my pitiful maps in pubs. Problem is with custom testing is that the tests arenât real competition situations and do not provide so good feedback. Also only one clan would not be enought to determine where the gameplay bugs are.
I think that the 1024^3 competition map pack would interest some clans, maybe as warm up at least. They provide fast paced gameplay and 10 -15 min playtime. And I think I read something that someone thought that map I am working with iffy and Mr. Mean Mustard: the (ex. v2_base) Vengeance map would suit the clan play.
I am just hoping that my maps would get some quality gameplay time.
If maps are made for, as you said - 10-15 minute fast gameplay, then it or at least, should, get the quality gameplay time it deserves. Regardless of how shite a map is or an objective⌠if its fast paced, action filled and fun then why the hell not.

i made a map just like this. because it is small and dull for public use then no one ever plays it. i never got any proper feedback on the map except comments like âit was too small for my 64man serverâ so i stopped working on it and started making big maps. after all whats the point to spend 3+ months building a map only to see it never be played. if clans want better custom maps then i suggest they take a more active role in testing them. SenF clan (and a few others cant think who off the top of me head) seem to be about the only ones that check the editing forum and ask to test maps. i suggest other clans follow this practice. better still if decent clans could co-operate to test maps agaisnt each other that would be better. Now imagine if your a mapper and you make a map and give the first beta to a couple of decent clans who then agree that they will play it in friendlies agaisnt each other a few time. now how helpful would that be to the mapper. imagaine the feedback that some decent clans could give to the mapper so that the next version they make of the map is even better. Anyway this is just wishful thinking but again i say if clans want better customs then get out there and play them and help to test them
I think that the 1024^3 maps are perfect for fastpaced short stopwatch matches.
Itâs just that its the leagues that need to wake up and take a closer look at the maps that are being released. And we most definately need to stop looking at RTCW, ET isnât RTCW, will never be RTCW, and doesnât want to be RTCW. (thatâs why Iâm very biased to the maps that are being converted from RTCW to ET, make something original insteadâŚ)

Absolutely. We at SenF love to check out some of the latest maps and are always willing to be involved in testing to help check for map bugs, gameplay etc. If there are any mappers doing stuff that would like a clan to check out their maps then please do feel free to check with us on irc #teamsenf.
I still dream of Market Garden for ET⌠aaah glory days they where. Endless days of battle for RTCW.
Yeah, it was great for a blast but pretty ridiculous play to be honest!

I have been on this website and seen some of the maps screenshots and would be interested in a few of those to have a pop at. The map with the rising/lowering water levels looks interesting.

Thx. The gamepaly in my map is not best possible. The claustrophobia, bazaar and ctf_bunker has excelent gameplay IMHO. We map makers would be honored if you would like to check them out. I think the maps are still runnig in few servers.

No worries, will be having a look at those⌠The bazaar one was another that looked very impressive.
