It’s not “illegal” it is not against the law.
Still doesn’t mean they can’t sue for it in civil court.
And why does the people in charge say anything here in this thread, seems they do not care.

“15 year old takes it upon himself to rape a work of art and pretend he is a lawyer”
pretend he is a lawyer
Well sorry, but you seem to not know what you are talking about.
Nullzilla you’re in denial, can’t you see?
“It’s not illegal!”
Did you really red the Terms of Acceptance and Usage when you installed ET?
Even if you are planning on making a modification to goldrush, it’s a better idea to become a real mapper first before doing stuff like that. Maps like goldrush are so complex that I wouldn’t recommending any noobies fool with it.
BTW: SplashDamage is a London based company, so they’d sue you under UK laws, I believe.
“It’s not illegal!”
Well it is not Illegal. It is not a crime, but that does not mean they can’t file a lawsuit in a civil court.

Heh I’ve already made like 5 maps already; yes most of them suck but that was a long time ago I made them. I had a few months where I was really sick and couldn’t do much but I did get a little practice in and I think if I were to start a fresh map right now it would come out pretty good.
And like I said, I made SuperGoldrush as a private map for my clan but someone who joined our server liked it and submitted it to a few mapping sites
You gotta love self-righteous teenagers, especially when they’re wrong. :moo:

What am I wrong about?
Can you outsource this catfight to ICQ, AIM, MSN, PM or something?
This is turning into a very silly and boring thread. Just stop it.
(wondering why the thread isn’t already closed)
The only reason i think SD let mappers use it was to get ideas of their own (i used it to find out about all sorts of stuff) such as enities, the tank and truck. But that doesnt mean you should take some ones hard work and make 2 hours worth of changes and sell it off as your own evern if it was to your clan, the fact remains that you changed it. Now be a regular mapper and learn to start from scratch like i did when i was (and probably still am compared to some <_<) a new mapper.
If I count correct we are at 7 at the moment:
Goldrush (stock)
Goldrush with “scriptfix”
Goldrush2_wx_beta2
Goldrush2_fk_b1
Super Goldrush
Super Goldrush 2
SW_Goldrush

No there is even more. I saw a server running another one, I can’t remember what it was called but it’s not one on that list I can remember that much.
I just want the SD level designers to reply to this thread and share what they think about this whole ordeal. I messaged them and it shows they have read it but I haven’t gotten a reply yet, it’s been over a week now.
SD does only the design. The ones who own the maps and the game are activision. No need to bother the SD team with this.
actually i would pay more attention to a reply by SD poeple than any other around here. you’re after
this legal / illegal stuff… i’d be more interestes in what the creator of original goldrush thinks… :moo:
I think their lack of response means that they accept it, though not necessarily like it. Otherwise they could reduce this madness somewhat by saying once and for all that it is illegal (if it is) and that they don’t want people to do it. (At least I hope that the more “serious” mappers would respect that.)
It’s not very smart to add the goldrush.map with the game. Also if it’s only to take a look at it in radiant…the people who added this in ET, knew that mappers will use it to create new versions. So I think mappers can make as much versions of Goldrush as they want. I’m also planning a goldrush for me and my clan. So what? :disgust:
If you want more original maps, don’t add the .map file in your pk3 so people can’t make new versions :bash:

@ sauron: You are plain wrong. As long as you don’t have written permission doing remakes of the stock maps is illegal due to copyright.
And you got a funny idea of how legality works… I mean, if I go to the gunshop and nick a pumpgun, according to what you say this would be legal as long as the shopkeeper doesn’t complain, wouldn’t it?
@ softwar: its a good idea to add the .map because ppl learnt a lot of it. Its the completely stupid ppl who spoil the idea of sharing by ripping it off. Imagine there s no .map shipped with the radiant… it would be very hard to map and would take LOTS of more time to learn without an example.
AND shipping the .map does NOT give permission to all noobs (and I use this word with intent here) who can’t make up a proper map of their own to create versions of gr.

Actually, I think you misinterpreted him. He said that they accept it, not that they approve, condone, encourage, support or are happy about it. The reality is that people will convert included maps (e.g., goldrush, beach, etc), will use RTCW models, will use RTCW textures. etc. Neither SD, Activision, Grey Matter, etc have taken steps to stop it or even discourage it, so people are going to continue. It’s as simple as that.
Naturally, mappers who feel like they shouldn’t be reusing other’s assets won’t and those who have no problems with it will. I fail to see what is so hard to understand about that.
Otherwise they could reduce this madness somewhat by saying once and for all that it is illegal (if it is)
This is what I was referring to.
