GF wants to play DB but is turned off by the harassment she gets when playing.

(KINE) #41

There was a girl yesterday teaching her BF how to play Dirty Bomb… objectives, delivering, watch out for the train honey! … I thought that was sweet lol.

My friend was playing against them and dominating so I asked him to ease off. I changed sides, told everyone what was happening and we went pistol only.

A couple other female players I’ve encountered weren’t terrible and we all played normally. Didn’t see any harassment. I suppose it’s down to luck whether or not there are asshats on your server.

(AnimeDude) #42

Whatever it is, there’s clearly a reason. No one gets harassed for no reason. I’ll go out on a limb and say it’s because she’s a bad player. Plenty of people get called out and insulted for being bad players. In that case, suck it up, mute chat, git gud.

(kibloy) #43

It’s kind of sad you have to hide your gender when playing with strangers, but that’s just the way it is. The average FPS player’s age and maturity level paired with the rarity of girls in those games is an unfortunate combination.
Either pretend to be a dude or grow thick skin, that is the only practical advice you’ll ever get.

(Fiktio) #44

This is actually a very good question.
Did she get harassed just because of talking in voice chat or what actually really happened?

In general every time I’ve played with people that are female, these people have been able to play normally without harassment. Harassment towards gender is a thing that I haven’t seen yet in this game. But there’s this one thing that probably everybody have seen:
People require some teamwork. One clueless Skyhammer that avoid dropping ammo and medic stepping on people who are on the ground, this kind of players will annoy people easily. And those who have a short temper will tell you immediately what’s wrong.
Could this be the case?

(Sir_Slam) #45

Welcome to the Internet!

I mean I agree that it’s terriable and that these people’s knees should get batted in until they puke, but it’s the nature of the beast. People suck.

And there’s a mute button for that. Fuck 'em. They’ll die alone in their basements. You’ve presumably got better things to do than care.

(Potato_Ladder) #46

DO NOT use voice chat, use radio command instead, tell her that toxicity happens to everyone and make sure your gf has a thicker skin next time she’s playing online.

Internet is not a place for everyone, grow thick skin or you’ll get played around like a fool.

Isn’t as much of a gender issue more than a problem with the mentality of most using VOIP. Seen it so many times when someone young is using VOIP and instantly get a vote kick against him, or people just spamming chat with “F-ing kids”.
Same thing if someone is speaking with a rather heavy accent and people will just start with steriotypes of his/hers country.
People are tits. Show her where the mute button is and then avoid VOIP. And like other has said before; If you want to talk to people while playing then you join a clan or a gaming community where they have some kind of moderation of players behaviors.

(Rjsto) #48

And one of them was for some reason just holding down the voice chat button the whole time, hmmmmmmm

(Faraleth) #49

Another thing worth mentioning is that I keep voice chat off 100% of the time. I just turn it off in the options menu, and I never have to put up with angry kiddies shouting over God-knows-what, or hearing how bad my team is, etc.

Most people won’t complain in text chat - but those who do… I just hope we get a text chat mute soon. rolls eyes

(SiegeFace) #50

Turn off mic , change name to something young boys or adults that act like young boys wont notice. Solved…

Or just mute and ignore them, should really be able to report abusive behaviour but also this is the internet you need to be thick skinned.

Reminds me of the day when I had a discussion with my friend. I told him once that when I’m playing public, I am most often listening music, so I can’t hear that well what people say in-game. My friend didn’t like what he heard and told me that when he is giving some useful tips in the voice chat, he would appreciate if people listen… :expressionless:

However if I want to communicate with people, I go to play with friends and use TS for communicating. And every time when someone decides to start yelling with microphone in game, I’m glad that mute option exists.

(Sinee) #52

Tell her she needs tougher skin if she’s going to be a gamer in a male-dominated game. It comes with the territory. I’m a girl and I’ve heard probably everything in the book. Honestly, on DB it’s pretty tame and the shit-talking doesn’t tend to be gender-exclusive— meaning, everyone gets shit-talked at some point.

If someone shits on me in a match, I dish it right back. It helps that I play with my boyfriend and we’re usually in matches with the same tag, I’m sure. He’s one of those 55/5 snipers so he gets the most attention. Usually I just get people adding me on Steam if they hear me though.

But yeah, tell her to toughen up and dish it back. Getting people aggro if they start crap with you is fun, tends to throw their game off if they’re too busy crying over not being able to push someone around. Just have fun with it, don’t take it so seriously.

(DatAssparagus) #53

Hey everyone, thanks for chiming in.

We’ve joined DBN so hopefully things will be better off this way.

Also no, she’s an above average player and usually hits 2nd place or beats me at times in pubs, she says thanks for your guys’ concerns about her gaming skill.

It’s sad that she is being told to basically just put up with it. Shouldn’t be that way. Yes the demographic is young and immature but they should know better. Just because they’re behind a computer doesn’t mean they’re allowed to spew profanities at another person online. It by definition is online harassment and I do think those players should be given warnings/suspensions to reduce the toxicity of the gameplay.

Lots of games have warnings about swearing and harassment. Db doesn’t. Doesn’t even have a filter that I’m aware of.

Anyways, all is good now. Thanks everyone.

(KINE) #54

don’t their text get muted aswell ? I swear this is already the case.

(Daergar) #55

I wish we had more first world problems to get worked up over. Fuck sake, hit mute and play on and stop dreaming of accountability and responsibility among anonymous humans.

And yes, I am certain I offended a whole slew of people. The horror.

(stealthyCharm) #56

#Faraleth do you keep voice chat open when playing Comp?
