GF wants to play DB but is turned off by the harassment she gets when playing.

(DatAssparagus) #1

Hey guys,

My gf really enjoys DB but says literally every time she has played she’s had to put up with offensive statements and name calling etc. and its making her want to quit. :frowning:

What can we do about it?

-Ass

i’ve rarely had any offensive statements thrown at me… maybe its because shes a girl? does she have a name that indicates that she is one?

(watsyurdeal) #3

As much as I would like to say things will change…that’s the internet for ya.

Me, I’d be one of those of those guys just asking her for ammo, then proceed to blaze her with my knife till she gives me some.

I just want to shoot things

Hmm, that really sucks :frowning: I would suggest telling her to play objective/stopwatch, rather than Execution, if that’s what she’s playing. I rarely play Execution (due to dislike for the terrible game mode), but almost every game I’ve had there has been toxicity all over the place - I rarely see it in the other game-modes.

Failing that, you could always try and get together a friendly match with people. There are various social groups and places for you to find people to play with ^.^

That’s incredibly sad, and I hope it isn’t the case. People are dicks, man. -rolls eyes-

I thought this would’ve happened

Just disable her in-game chat.

Shes encountered it in every game mode, more so in execution.

Doesn’t make it okay. If you were in her shoes you wouldn’t like it either.

She shouldn’t have to play differently than anyone else. If she likes the game mode she should be able to play it without constant harassment.

Her name was girly but now its more unisex. But her voice obviously isn’t. She doesn’t voice chat anymore because of it.

Not going to do anything to change her gameplay based on a few dickwaddlers. She chats often using in game chat because her voice gives all these kids hard ons.

She deserves respect for being a player like everyone else and shouldn’t be judged or commented negatively towards just based on her gender.

:frowning: my feathers are ruffled up @Faraleth

That’s just the way it is. Instead of using ingame VOIP, you could consider finding a community and use TS instead of having to deal with the toxic environment in pubs.

(Gung-ho) #9

Unfortunately men have self esteem issues which is not an excuse and shame on them for taking it out on her/other women because they feel safer attacking women.

Very simple explanation might go into it more later.

Start a Patreon.

(KattiValk) #11

Pick a genderless name and don’t use VOIP. S’what I do.

(Black) #12

If we banned every single user who insults another there wouldn’t be any people left to play.
Seriously, almost everyone does it.

(CirclesofJerk) #13

It sounds to me like regular old banter between players. There aren’t any mentions of it being gender-based anywhere in the OP. Why would anyone deserve special banterless treatment? There’s a mute button right there, no need to disable chat completely.

(VincentRJaeger) #14

Well. Harassment based on gender is plain awful no matter how. There’s no way to justify it. Not much that can be done about it, sadly. As long as anonymity reigns, people will behave badly in the majority of the cases.

What can be done, however, is to offer an invite to any community with people that actually have a brain don’t care about gender. There’s so many benefits to it and the best thing of all? It’s no change in the standard gameplay as there’ll still be voice communication and such!

I hope you’ll find out something! You have my support on it atleast, even if I sadly can’t offer much to help :<

(RyePanda) #15

Yeah, finding some people to play with on teamspeak is the best way to go, no matter what gender.

(XavienX) #16

I guess you could use quick chat by pressing “v” and a set of numbers for replacement but I honestly think your girlfriend is really unlucky. I’ve only met a few toxic people before but nothing like what your girlfriend seems to be experiencing. Maybe because of your girlfriend’s mic is not tuned correctly so it’s hard to let people recognize she is a girl not a 12 yr old squeaker? Or maybe she isn’t as experienced so experienced players bash on her?

(Litego) #17

If she wants to play video games she’s just gonna have to get used to it and grow a thick skin. Teach her to love the hate. I find it hilarious when people start raging, it fuels me, absolutely love it. There’s nothing that can or will be done about it, it’ll always be like that.

Personally no matter how frustrated and pissed off I am, I don’t take it out on other people in-game, I find it immature and distasteful. But that doesn’t prevent others from doing it, and they will do it. So she’s just gonna have to learn to deal with it, or even enjoy it as I do.

(Blackers) #18

Sorry to hear that, what servers are you playing on? US, EU, ect…? becuase i have to say for the kind of game that Dirty Bomb is, and the fact it is free to play, I’ve been quite impressed with it’s community, sad to hear this isn’t the case for everyone. Is she speaking over mic in game? since a lot of frustrated virgins don’t know what a girl sounds like just assume they are listening to a young boy.

Saddens me when girls get put off gaming just because some guys don’t know how to handle the presence of the opposite gender. well bullying of any kind on online games is pathetic, but unfortunately it’s the internet, people will act however they want as long as they have a screen to hide behind.

I think reporting players for harassment needs to be implemented, to go along side reporting cheaters and offensive names.

Best thing to do is form your own little group of regular players and get set up on Teamspeak. and enjoy company that you know your GF can get on with.

Wish you guys the very best.

(Ctrix) #19

Somehow I doubt this is because she’s a girl.
Is she really bad at the game? It takes some serious scrubplays to be called out outside of Execution.
In Execution it’s more easy to be a dead weight since there’s no respawn, and has more chat activity because people have nothing else to do once they’re dead, and there’s frequent waits between rounds.

Also you’re not supposed to use voice chat in pub games, even if you’re a guy. It clashes with music, your sound quality over ingame voice is aweful. And nobody asked for your opinion.

(Litego) #20

Yeah, didn’t sound like gender harassment to me either. Regular banter isn’t gender harassment just cause she’s female.
