It doesn’t ‘only’ have to be about abuse. Voice chat is an OPTIONAL feature in gaming, so it defaulting to off only seems logical. Monitors don’t default to PIP when you turn it on…it’s an optional feature. Not everyone has a mic, and not everyone enjoys voice chat. What if a new player goes online and starts hearing a teammate talking through the speakers? He’s gonna be be like “WTF?!” or what if someone like me, who doesn’t like to talk to strangers over the internet…I don’t want to hear you talking, and I don’t want to talk back to you. Besides, I’m sure a lot of in-game voice like “need ammo” “Medic!” “protect the objective” will be pre-programmed into the game, so many of the things people would say, are accessible without voicechat.
If you want to voice chat, turn it on, otherwise it only makes sense to default it to off. There not talking about removing voice chat completely, so I don’t see what the big deal is…
In my opinion the quality of voice chat in ETQW and most pc games/communities was/is very good. Even when kids were playing and using it they were generally well mannered and contributed well to the team.
The problem with many PC games is that there is simply not enough people using the ingame voip. Either because there clan is using TS or vent or because they don’t have a micraphone or lastly because they dont want to or know how.
What I think a lot of us are concerned with is further hindering the situation. I think we need to encourage more people to use the in game voice chat not discouraging them by having it to defualt off.
If you don’t want to recieve in game chat then you can turn it off. ETQW had the option to receive global, team, and fire team chat. Even if you want to have voice chat on and there is an indivdual who is annoying you can locally mute them in the limbo menu.
With this considered I don’t see what the problem is with having voice chat defualt to on. to restate my point, voice chat is integral to teamplay and we should encrouage it not discourage it. I can understand why you might want to implement this feature for console players were muting everyone at the start of the game is common practice, but it just seems daft to me to implement this for the PC where IMO the problem simply does not exist.
