well if you came up with clever way where the area the players fight in are in a way a representation of the rules and variables of the virtual reality of the world that the game takes place then players might be able to change the world around them and all kind of other thing like how scores are awarded etc

or if a more robust and intuitive map scripting system could be created then maby players could re script the map as it was played allowing them to change just about anyhting. you would probably need to implent some kind of rules though to make script entries permentant or at least not changable for some time

I had half an idea for a mod for et:qw when trying to think up map ideas, how about a Mad Max style mod set in a post apocalyptic future where fuel is short and gangs roam the roads of the wastelands in their never ending search for the black gold. The teams could be the motor gangs and the ‘good guys’ like the people who ran the oil refinery in Mad Max2 who had to defend their oil from the gangs. The classes would need some more thought as would the weapons, i dont think the whole cross-bows theme used in the films would work but the weapons max used should be included like the sawn-off shotgun and maybe some modern weapons made to look rusty and heavily used would do. Vehicles would be straight forward anything like these in the following links would be grand:

some maps could be based of scenes from the films like barter town and the oil refinery, but new ones set in ruined city scapes and scorched country sides and nuclear bunker type underground stations.

If more thought went into it I bet you could get a half decent mod out of it.

kinda inspired by the idea in the obove post, that was inspired by the calvin and hobbes post. wow isnt discusion great

the best way i can describe it is sort of like a matrix style world but not about cheesy slow mo gun fights. rather then have a battle in one area each map is much much smaller in size compared to a ET map. matches are not played per map but rather one match could go over potentialy every map the game has as well as custom map at the same time

each map has gateways to other maps but the gateways are created by the user by reprograming the enviroment e.g. where there is a door that opens into a closet the player can search for the closet_door_03 event open and re program the door to open a gateway (some wating time disguised as compiling code etc needed for server and clients to load maps) so when this door is opened again and you look though and your standing on top of a tall building

the feature that the worlds are programed was already mentioned above, i havent yet though of a way that the players can access the code of the world unless the game is played in windows mode and view screen is only part of the bigger game. i like this idea because it allows playes to write there own programing tools etc. other posiibilites iv though of are that players just stand still in the game whiel they access the code but sounds like it prob wont be much fun nad lead to a lot of unchalenging kills

to stop players having a far to easy time getting around the world since they can change everyhting in just a few lines of code in a door its far too unchalenging other things need to be intorduced like access rights, encyption/decryption, code protection, and little sub programs that scan the code for stuff cleanign it up. the game need to be robust and be able to cope with erros in the code since lots will accour, it would be perhaps better if the game accpeted the code but had unpredictable effects e.g. you might die or end up somewhere you totaly dint expect to be

well g2g goan think about this some more and try write it up into a better descripted post with more relation to objectives etc

This sounds like you want to make “The construct” from the Matrix series.
In the movie, they’re working from a ship where they program the construct before plugging into the matrix.

This also makes me think of an extension of Garry’s Mod… It would be worth to bring a mod team together working on this idea. (Of course, it’d be mostly coders and just a few artists.)

I’ve got an idea for a mod. It’s the future and you have lots of high-tech weapons and tanks and stuff. Evil cyborg-like aliens with lasers and mechs invade Earth and you must defeat them before they infest the populace with their cyborg implants.

Actually, the ideas about a gang war or a Mad Max scenario sound really fun. I finally watched the QuakeCon video about ET:QW, and it sounds like they were inspired a bit by GTA vehicles, with handbrake tuirns and trick jumps. I bet there will be tons of fun stuff done with the QW vehicle physics.

in a way yes, rather then the idea being that the players are fighting in a matrix style reality where the world can be changed but is esentialy someone elses the idea is that the entire game runs in a construc like reality where the players are responsable for everyhting that is loaded/created

thinking of it this way has given me some idea for what the objectives of the mod could actul be.

*just plain old deathmatch - prob not very fun since it would be slowed down a great deal by having to stock and hack etc where if you had a team you could even devote one or two players to just hacking to help the others doing the dirty work

*team deathmatch, again might be fun for a bit but it probably would remove a lot of the hacking aspect since there wouldnt realy be much point in moving around the world etc since you match could be contained in just one map area

*control of reality. as mini map areas are loaded players could figh for control to them, control could be more the way a team manipulates an area, if team A has actuly control of an area but team B has programing sealing most of the exits and security and encrpytion everywhere it will be much easier for them to take it back than team A hold it

rather then have the players figh over the entire reality there could be critical realites that are loaded and the other can be used as gateways from one point to another, spawnpoints, ammo points etc. to ensure that gameplay stays focused one critical point may only be active at once

with the mas of driving games out there i find it hightly unlikely that they would have got a lot of inspiration from GTA especaily considering how differnt the games are. they also say there is a lot of emphasis that each vehicle handels individualy

also trickjumps in drivables where around a long time before GTA

Well, I don’t know the exact history of driving games, but the way semi-hidden jumps are scattered around the map reminded ME of GTA.

They’re called “Unique jumps” in GTA, and you needed each to be done in order to completed the game for 100% in GTA III and GTA: Vice City.

More on Calvinball Mod.

  • Reskinned models: now all models have masks. Somewhat redundant for GDF…
  • server automatically mutes you for several minutes if you say the word ‘mask’.
  • There’s a ball somewhere on the map, with a nice physics system.
  • switching of teams mid-game is allowed.
  • Each player gets mutated Referee/admin powers (-kicking, banning). Players can change all cvars. As soon as one of them is changed, the previously changed cvar reverts to default. And no cvar can be changed twice.

NEW RULE ! NEW RULE ! Gravity set to 300 !

Doesn’t sound THAT hard, does it ?
