Enemy Territory: Wolfenstein Wars
Fresh Ideas For Mods
dont know if any of you played an old game called incoming but that was pretty good fun and would make a cool mod for QW imo
just for thoes of you not familiar with the game
incoming levels where set in a vatiety of battles all in differnt location. deaert, oil rich cost etc. and rather then controling a avitar for the duration of the battle you would fight skirmishes and then chnage to the next avitar. its was pretty good and the constant changing stright into one fight after the next meant that you realy were never out of the action for more then a few seconds. also what was good was the variety of avitars you would play though a mission, jets, tanks and my fave ground turrets each testing you different abiliteis
combine this with some rts style play. perhaps one team could be on defence and after say three waves of enemy attack player would have the option to spend earnt xp on realbuild and adding sturctures to there base, or calling in a number of tanks allowing an armour skirmish
demo avaidable here. pretty hard to find and needs registration
http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/action/incoming/index.html?q=incoming <-only 4 meg
also i know basing it on a exisitng game is perhaps not a fresh mod but since the game is so old and never seemed to take off. also since i havent played anyhting else like it since then i asume that the idea is new to most players out there
OK time to be serious…
A Mr Do mod. We all dress up like clowns , a ball is our weapon, we munch cherries and grass and hunt for letters that spell EXTRA.
Clown Wars
that was a great game - came free with a joystick I bought. Though im not sure you could convert that into a multiplayer game. Incoming was spent sat in a turret, tank or aircraft.
well if you think about having skirmishes set up as things like one team apears as a bunch of tanks and the other team as another drivable squad and one team comes to destory the base the other has to protect it. or posibly even a co op style game where one all players are on one team and all manning turrents etc while swarms of enemy jets come in
you probably need to think of more dynamics to the game to create some kind of coperation between players more then just shooting at the same things to make it a worthwhile teamplay experience
Sorry Grandpa, but millions of gamers have said how great GTA was, and it spawned a new genre which is booming. If you seriously consider ‘glamorizing’ inner city gangs to be bad, but don’t find glamorizing war to be horrible (even against aliens), then your crazy. The most offensive game in the world would be played by me if the gameplay is good.
I think all of the mods should have fluffy bears that bleed friendship when you shoot them with love arrows.
I’ve thought of putting together a mod team to develop a TC based on the resistance during either Quake Wars or WW2. I think it’d be cool to have characters that could fight with Malatov Cocktails and such. I have other ideas but they aren’t original. I think for a mod to be successful these days they have to be original in development or incorporate something new at least. There are 200 WW2 mods, unfortunately 199 of them will be unplayed because there are better games out there.
i think that is basicly the kind of reason mods are not realy getting as popular. when 99% of all mods are dreamed up is it on some amazing new gameplay mechanic or some idea of setting and theme? i would be willing to bet most are on theme and although may make a mod with new look, weapons and even feel the core gameplay mechanics that we all take for granted are still the limiting factors that prevent the game from being new and original
if you look at the background elemts that make up pretty much all fps games and then think how some could be changed would definatly give your mod a totaly unqiue feel thats not your average fps game. here is a few i can think of off hand
players have a range of health from dead-full
there are often no more than 2 teams, or every man for himself
different weapons are the keys to differnt damage/fireing types
when you think of the most revolutionary game in the fps history they have always changed something like this e.g. dead-full health system but then introduced revives allowing players to come back from the dead, although taken for gratend now
I would love to see a wide openrange Sniper Mod. Without Vehicles, only pure Sniping. Could be very cool!
A pure A vs. B Team Battle Mod in some Buildings would also be nice. Maybe i am going to start mapping again.
greets, Daniel
I had a great idea for new gameplay in a FPS, but I lack the skill to model, map, or program (beyond simple stuff) to get it done. All I have is great management and creative idea skills.

well start a thread and pitch ur idea. there is so much stuff about idea stealing etc and i have never learned of one case where it has actuly happned. dont be shy i wana no ur idea
also u might notice that the splash damage head man does not have the ability to map or moddel but still found a great place in a mod team because of his PR skills. if your idea is good you will have no trouble getting a team and you dont neseserily have to be a uber modder to contribute to the team
To add to carnage’s post with one brief line:
Mostly good ideas will not be stolen, the real problem is to make people accept them.
Also, almost everyone willing to dedicate the hundreds or thousands of hours it takes to make a good mod wants to implement their own ideas, not some random “good idea” they got off the internet. Even if they get the basic concept from your idea, chances are it will come out completely different from what you envisioned.
Ideas are the easy part. Turning those ideas into something playable is the hard part.

and yet there are mod teams… and thats obviously becasue its just not some random with modding skills its someone who likes or shares your ideas and therfore would be willing to comit the time. Some ideas can be very vauge but as a concept they are fine and good way to get some feedback but making a design brief will go someway to stabalise the idea. and even if you made the mod yourself its likely that there will be some change to the idea when implemented when its adapted to suit the reality of the game rather than the concept that is just based on ideas on someones head
also as idea are made they are likely to be developed and everyone working on the project might have surgestions and idea that might imporve on your initial idea. dont fall into the trap that just becasue it was your idea and your the team leader then your ideas are allways the best
not bad - but CS sucks when you spend all your money on decent weapons only to get shot by a camping AWP pro (then spending the next 3 minutes spectating)
Delta Force was great for sniping, Barrett kills from 800 meters were awesome
Very likey you can add a Battletech mod to that list, although nothings definitive untill we actually have a game in our hands, same with the format and style of the mod.
but we have started some pre vis (in the form of normal map training)

I’ve worked on a number of mods with no technical experience whatsoever. Usually, I was in charge of Promotions, Community Management and Project Design and Management. A lot of mods aren’t ever released because they don’t get the attention and the team dissolves or they aren’t ever finished because they don’t have a leading voice. Locki is a great example of how the team garnered a lot of attention and a position such as his can be very useful.
