Fresh Ideas For Mods

(Danyboy) #1

As mentioned in another topic the ideas for mods has been talked about. The problem is that 90% of mods being worked on (and not just for QW) aren’t very original. This also seems to make most of these mods a waste of time as half never get completed and the other half only ever have a small community base. This in turn limits the number of players about so the mod never takes off.

The trend seems to be, when a new game comes to make one of the following themes:

*Realism
*Sci-Fi
*WW1
*WW2
*Star Wars
*Lego

It would be great to see a completely new mod rather than a regurgitation of an existing one.

i have nothing against a star wars mod with the quake wars engine, as battlefront sucks badly. from what quake wars is capable of it shouldn’t even be hard to do. i wouldn’t say that the reptitive themes are the problem, i’d rather say the problem is to create a mod that creates high acceptance and which works.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Fortress!

although Valve are releasing Team Fortress 2 in the very near future - looks a lot of fun

A fantasy (or sci-fi like earh) RTS Mod (With buildings, resources (for weapon factorys) and dragons/animals as vehicles) + complex skill system (magic etc). More than 2 teams would be great. QW supports stuff like buildings, so it wouldn’t be that hard.

Since ETQW will already have a built-in system for deploying static items, I’d like to see a mod enlarging that part of gameplay. It does not have to involve RTS-like downview as seen in Empires for HL2 (former BF1942) necessarily, but building up your base, gathering ressources, researching technologies to unlock powerful weaponry might be fun. Also it would be nice to actually have to buy your own vehicles (delivered onto the battlefield as well) rather than having them popping up on the battleground.

Edit: I see I’m not the only one hoping for such a mod…

Yes, but more like a spiritual sucessor for TFC, since TF2 probably won’t have concs and whatnot. We’ll see though.

A fantasy game would rock, sort of like oblivion: combat or something

I had that idea when i was playing Tremoulus (great game btw). They’ve added deployables to the quake (3, afair) engine. Thats really funny. You can deploy automatic guns against aliens for example. But i don’t know anything about the D3 engine. Never tried the SDK… but i hope it’s as easy as the q3 code (maybe oop made it a bit easier).

i remember an old Q2 mod that came on the Extremities addon-pack - can’t remember the name but you created and controled Strogg units - a mini CnC game. You had to collect cell packs as they were the resource. Was pretty funky

Oh and Action Quake 2 was on that disc too - that was gallons of fun

What about something like Defense of the Ancients in Warcraf3? 2 teams of 5 players that can also place RTS-style buildings. Barracks buildings spawn hordes of weak bots that run along pre-set paths towards the enemy base and engage each other. The object of players (who would be ten times as powerful as a bot) would be to shepherd the bots into the enemy base where they can destroy some kind of final objective. Throw in some player upgrades via the XP system and you’d have something a bit different for an FPS.

I’d like to see a ET:QW WW2 mod. That would be very nice.

something new for a first person shooter ???
I figure FPS are kinda restricted to hand held weapons, not going to be much different unless you go further back in time, war is war
ya wanna play chess, play chess

(TheKaiser) #13

Yes, there just aren’t enough ww2 shooter games out there.

Well it hasn’t been done in a multiplayer game, but I’d like to see a 80’s gang war mod. With a feel reminiscient (sp?) of GTA games, you would play as a member in a gang in an alternate universe where the inner cities are left to the gangs and resemble a modern wild west.

Players could choose from a large variety of weapons like handguns, uzi’s, and rifles, but explosives would be limited to molotav cocktails. A selection of vehicles provides transport and the opportunity to pull of drive-by’s.

Classes could be based off of organized gang ranks like foot soldiers, and others like drivers that can order cars from a garage.

Gameplay could include Capture the something, and a GTA-like hood capture… X zones where gang members can congregate and take over a territory.

Customization would be great with this. Allowing clans to use their own gang name in a match along with colors/insignia’s.

Any good?

worst idea since GTA itself
glamorizing inner city gang crap is part of today’s problems

I’ve thought of putting together a mod team to develop a TC based on the resistance during either Quake Wars or WW2. I think it’d be cool to have characters that could fight with Malatov Cocktails and such. I have other ideas but they aren’t original. I think for a mod to be successful these days they have to be original in development or incorporate something new at least. There are 200 WW2 mods, unfortunately 199 of them will be unplayed because there are better games out there.

i think what we’ll never see is a stargate mod. they’re neither capable of doing a game nor do they allow a capable team to do a mod …
