Free to Play - Steam
I don’t agree.This screws gameplay and hardly.

I see only talking about polys,99% of gaming community don’t know what it means.
Who cares about graphics, just Xreal and texture rework with ETPro and that into Steam, thats all.
I personaly don’t give **** about polys,I watch at gameplay.

Wrong link:D Thats real : http://www.moddb.com/mods/etxreal
without poly`s, models have all square edges, without your desktop display being 1600x1200, or 1920x1200, no1 cares for a game where players still have square heads

(Shanks) #42

Ummmm…wtf? You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. What you think is polys is called anti-aliasing…

(.Chris.) #43

ET’s models are quite low poly by today’s standards and do look squared around the edges, no amount of AA will change that.
A ‘clean’ W:ET on steam would be wonderful. I would even be willing to pay for it.

They could also use it as promotional material for their games. Just like Valve is whoring the original portal for their actions.

You know what, I just send Zenimax a mail.
Did you get a reply by Zenimax? A big problem with any kind of redistributing ET on Steam or any other outlet, is that the original EULA is very strict, and only allows redistributing ET in it’s original 255mb .zip file. That license was made back when fileplanet was the biggest game downloading platform. Steam, the mac appstore and such did not exist back then. Putting ET on Steam would require changing the original download file, getting the assets out, and editing the binary to run with steam. The original EULA doesnt allow that. Zenimax should have re-licensed the assets under a different EULA.

(SockDog) #47

I don’t think writing a new EULA is a major hurdle. What I see holding it back.

 1. Resources to make it Steam compatible
 2. Resources allocated to support it
 3. Monetary motivation (either direct or indirect)

Point 3 being the major reason. I think there is probably more chance they’ll do a remake with either a monetizing system (bearing in mind Quake Live is seen as a failure) or just a retail price.

Well, if the game was going to be re-released as a commercial title resources would indeed be a hurdle, but as a re-release of the free game only a new EULA would be needed. The source is available, it would require a coder few hours to make it steam compatible.

(SockDog) #49

I’m saying the opposite, a free title would need some level of support with zero possibility to recoup that cost. Unless they wrote that cost of as marketing of some description it would be unlikely to happen. I think the only reason we continue to see id Tech open sourced is that Carmack pretty much pushing for this and you don’t say no to Carmack.

Now taking W:ET and RTCW, converting to id Tech 5 and releasing as a new game would be more work but I’d say a lot less than writing an entirely new game. This may be something they’d be willing to explore especially when you see the likes of CS:GO doing the same.

(Apples) #50

Minecraft?

XD

(tokamak) #51

W:ET with steam server support might be the most cost-effective alternative to W:ETLIVE

Now I personally would pay the price of a full new game for that. But surely even for 5 or 10 euros as well as using it as promotional material next to new Zenimax releases it would be worthwhile no?

Might want to wait after the other nostalgic game, CSGO is cooled down, but I’m sure it will send a wave of interest through gaming land if W:ET is announced for Steam.

No, didn’t expect one it either.

(.Chris.) #52

CS:GO is quite simple and uses an ageing engine, to port ET and RTCW to idtech5 would be essentially making an entirely new game expect that the map layouts and such are already planned for you. It would be pointless porting to idtech5 if you weren’t going to make it on par with Rage’s gaphics and doing that will take a hell of a lot longer than what they guys working on CS:GO are having to do.

(Om3ga) #53

29 May 2013, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Reloaded?

That would make that release steam-only. People wanting to play it would have to get on steam. Would old non-steam W:ET servers work on the steam release? There’s other DDs like Origin nowadays. Re-releasing on any new platform though, would require a new EULA, maybe badman could help with any info on that.

(tokamak) #55

It could split up the community…or what is left of it. Quakelive didn’t suffer under it either. The advantage of steam is that it already has history and buddy list as well as better server information. It would be an utter delight.

(SockDog) #56

I know content is a large part of any game on disc but surely having the design of the art and game already done and proven is a lot less work than starting from scratch. This is really why I bring up CS:GO as the goal seems to be more to brush up on the existing game than start something over (as in CS2). I’d also say if W:ET was going to id Tech 5 I’d prefer it was done at a lower graphical level to keep the min spec low enough.

(.Chris.) #57

Then port it to idtech3.

(DarkangelUK) #58

Bit risky going to idtech5 since it’ll play and behave differently from the original that way (different physics, terrain interaction behaviour etc). I’d say idtech3 every time.
