If there is a will there is a way.
I’ve been waiting for it to go on sale so I can pick it up on Steam. It’s never dipped below $19.99.

Would be nice to put both ET and ETQW on steam, IMO. Retiring obsolete games allows them a prosperous ‘afterlife’ for cheapskates like me, as well as being good advertising. No game support, obviously, but still widens name recognition, player base, etc. To tell you the truth, I don’t understand why game makers sit on old code that will never make them another dime. After 5 years, why not let it become freeware for promotional purposes? It makes sense to me, anyway. Another bonus of ‘older’ software is that my system doesn’t have to be bleeding edge to run it. The other day, just for yucks, I was running 8 instances of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory servers on my Core2 Quad, without the machine even breaking a sweat. There are certain advantages to old software, that is for sure. A steam based W:ET with the 2.60b patch pre-installed would be for the win…
A ‘clean’ W:ET on steam would be wonderful. I would even be willing to pay for it.
They could also use it as promotional material for their games. Just like Valve is whoring the original portal for their actions.
You know what, I just send Zenimax a mail.

not using a old <= idtech3, modified GPL`d sources update openGL functions, never nothing much else todo with the render or gameplay
easier to make a fake wolf 2 mod in quakewars, all the code is already done, and the renderer is already good for another 8 years, its down to the modder to make the gameplay

Well then you modify the idTech3 if there is enough willing to do it that way. Yes idTech4 could be used for a conversion but then it brings it’s own quirks along for the ride. Either way you’re looking at work.
And of course this is assuming you want to update it graphically. Maybe just putting it on Steam, linking to the Steam community and other features is enough. As I said, making stuff like detailed stats or other features small DLC purchases may be enough to keep Valve and Bethesda happy financially.

there isnt enough willing todo it, ioquake and crx engines, update openGL, doing anything else to textures and poly UV maps and per pixel lighting from raw data and garbage from a openGL function, the math is more complex then the theory of the universe
You do know that Xreal is a modified id tech 3 engine, right?
Check its feature list to see what was added.

its another that all openGL update, its still al low poly engine, and nothing much else has changed
alien arena CRX looks better http://expo2011.quakewiki.net/detail-view.php?id=64&category=Booths
Yes, quake wars should be F2P too, i guess no1 won’t buy it anymore?
W:ET and ET:Quake Wars are much better games than A.V.A, spiral knight, global arena etc.

Here is tapir for you :stroggtapir:
You know what. We all should sent email to em.
make a remake of original W:ET using quakewars, and splash or id might give you a no cdkey exe file for windows and linux to use with the mod long before the engine might get GPL`d
I think that this is a perfect example of how a retail product can be ‘retired’ as freeware. Great advertising tool, IMO.

It’s only low poly because we only have low poly assets. If we had high poly assets it would run without a hitch. You don’t expect the assets to just magically become high poly because the engine supports it do you?
maybe, maybe not, if you can make a whole game, it is not hard to make a high poly player model, and see if they load up in the engine
if you have too many poly`s in most idtech engine along with 4, the model just wont load up in game
even though retail player models in idtech4 games are around 1000polys and weapons are 20, idtech4 can still handle alot more if the PC specs

I don’t agree.This screws gameplay and hardly.
I see only talking about polys,99% of gaming community don’t know what it means.
Who cares about graphics, just Xreal and texture rework with ETPro and that into Steam, thats all.
I personaly don’t give **** about polys,I watch at gameplay.
Wrong link:D Thats real : http://www.moddb.com/mods/etxreal
i also vote for et on steam because it means everybody can join my game, its now difficult to communicate with steamfriends when playing et, i always have to go to windowed mode
