Free to Play - Steam

(sidorn) #1

Hey been wondering…steam is offering new games to download - these are free to play games …why not put W:ET in there?

Hopefully it gets even some more recognition and you SD guys might consider making W:ET 2 :stuck_out_tongue:

Free to play as in no subscription fees, the games still cost money.

That’s certainly an interesting proposition. Wolf is owned by ZeniMax/id, though, so this stuff is completely up to them.

(shibbyuk) #4

They should put SD’s paid-for games in there first!!

(sidorn) #5

should at least suggest it to them :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d rather not have to deal with ZeniMax or Steam thank you

It would just be another distribution method no? As long as that is the case and nothing else is added to the game I can’t see any harm, would just create more exposure.

Great Idea! Start a new thread that says ET in STeam? and make sure to post it on the ET forum

Unfortunately as I see it that slippery slope was several valleys ago

W: ET at Steam is great idea.
It have hundreds of great maps and lot of mods.
5 stars for this topic :).

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory HD would be cool

It isn’t just distribution though. Steam brings a lot of the ease to hunting down websites, getting patches, making and keeping friends etc. That may open W:ET to a whole new group of players.

I guess you have some games on Steam already, Trackmania, Alien Swarm etc that are free and don’t directly generate revenue for Valve in regards to recouping hosting costs. I’d hate to see something like W:ET get mangled under some revenue generating premise.

Not sure if this is technically possible but I’d wonder if you could take W:ET and release it free as a low detail (original quality) game. Then as DLC sell a HD model/texture pack for $10-15. Yet still allow everyone to play together.

you have been able to download the full version for free since 2003

Who’s saying any different?

At the very worst end of the spectrum putting it on Steam is just another place to download it and at the more optimistic end it could revive and/or rejuvenate the game. There’s also no saying that a HD remake (DLC) couldn’t be ported to Live and PSN which would be a totally new market.

(king_troll) #14

if the fake wolf 2 mod is good enough, it would nodoubt be added to steam like garrys mod and some others

(Nail) #15

“fake wolf 2 mod” well, that says it all. The mod is just an exercise, not a game

(king_troll) #16

most mods are made to kill some time

(etwolfmod) #17

Dont Valve only add Freemium games to their F2P steam ?

(SockDog) #18

Valve has several free games on Steam but I’m not sure of the story behind them as they obviously have no ambition (yet) to become a free gaming repository. As I said, you could monetise W:ET by offering some sort of DLC*, Hi-Res textures/models, enabling stats/leaderboards, (not burn me) a pro-mod.

*Yes I understand this can be done by mods, for free. But the idea is to commercialise without charging for the core game or creating a tat hat shop.

Anyway… Anyone try out the F2P games? As an FPS gamer who feels ill at the thought of grinding XP is there anything there for me?

(king_troll) #19

idtech3 cant have hires anything, its a low poly engine where most textures are 256x256, you can have 200 polys on a model tops, not 25,000

I would have suggested making etqw free, but i imagine it would steal whatever brink players are left.
